Very, very interesting. It think it's pretty awesome that Rivers is corresponding with us. But through asschun? Whoa. Who woulda thunk it.
Rivers -- if you're reading this -- To me you seem to be singing closer to the way you used to on newer songs like 'The Dawn' and 'We Go Together' because you really belt the lyrics out like you did on Blue, Pinkerton and the Summer Songs 2k. I like Green alot, but you rarely seem to really belt them out, except on Hash Pipe and maybe the end of 'Simple Pages', which to me sounds like older stuff. However, most of the songs probably wouldn't call for that either, so.... Anyway, thanks for listening to all our input, It's pretty cool of you.

Something I e-mailed Karl.
I don't think the less "deep" lyrics have anything to do with it. It's just a manner of singin style, and the lack of personality is what I feel is the major problem. I mean the song that gets the biggest shit from anyone and everyone is Teenage Victory Song, and for correct reason too.
I suppose you don't anything about this, but I still remember back in April when you released the tracks that made comepletion through the Green sessions. TVS was supposed to be the song that had us throwing her arms in the air saying, "YEAH! THIS IS OUR SONG!". But when the song was actually released, being the first Green MP3 at that ( that's how bad people wanted to hear it ), the shit hit the fan. Everyone's mouth dropped and it was as if our favorite band died in our arms.
It was more of a shock than a disappointment and I don't think anyone ever truly recovered from that moment. Weezer had never let us down, and then all of a sudden this one song changed everything. This was a different band than we had listened to and worshipped for the past 6 years. It was with TVS that the Green backlash began.
During the Outloud Tour, when Don't Let Go was played, everyone got nervous. Something was amiss but we couldn't put our finger on it. I remember people even said that they e-mailed you asking if Rivers was holding back. and you replied he wasn't.
Over time, the shock has worn off and acceptance has kicked in. The best band in the world was not the best band anymore and we asked ourselves why. Why does Green pale in fear when placed next to its brothers Blue and Pink?
Go to www.theweezersource.com. Through the audio section, go to b-sides. Download mp3s of Teenage Victory Song and Velouria. Compare just the way Rivs voice sounds, not the lyrics, just singing style. Heck, if you really wanted to, take any song Pink or pre-pink song and compare voices with just about any song off Green or Post Green. And just so you know, I'm not a "Pinkerton is God" advocate. You can try this by listening to Chess or Purification of Water and to see if his sing style is still different than how he sings now. If you really wanted you could also download Rivs solo shows from Boston. I'm sure not all this music is lying for you to just pick and listen to....unless you're home 
Why else would there be such a big demand for old weezer stuff and not as much for new? People loved how Weezer used to sound. LOVED. They would get beaten up for it because that's how badly they loved Weezer. People would get called derogatory names and like it, simply because they made other people simply think of Weezer. I remember during one S2k show, some guy jumped on stage and hugged Rivers. That's how much Weezer meant to people. That's why people demand so much old stuff by Weezer. To relive that love they once had. To feel it and say, "yeah those were the days".

I'm amazed that people actually blindly believed it. I mean, we'll probably never know, but asschun has a reputation for making up emails from karl and posting them. This started when Paul (Powder Blue Guitar) legitimately got an email from Karl regarding Matt Sharp and asschun decided it wasn't real, despite the headers verifying it was. He then just started making up bogus emails from karl and saying, "look at this email karl sent me."
Jesus, from the amount of email from karl asschun supposedly gets, you'd think they were best buddies.

Hey bro. just passing along some comments from Rivers- he thanks you for your info so far. your comments are actually good for him, and he wants people to know that he is in fact pretty "clueless" about this stuff, beleive it or not. i guess as the actual guy writing and singing, you might not sense the change, as it maybe is gradual- anyway, he speculated as to why there is a different style more recently: less "deep" lyrics, the braces thing (correcting his lisp), recent "riffy" songs taking more of his attention toward working out the guitar parts, rushing the work put into the vocal parts before starting to record, and not listening critically enough to the recordings of his singing. He talked about singing the songs like a singer now as opposed to singing like an actor before. He says hes been really concentrating on singing the parts "right" and musically, as the expense of adding personality. He is reconsidering that approach now.
but he has some questions for you too-
you mention "Velouria" being like the 'old' way. but he sez he doesnt even know what those lyrics mean- so how could they sound "right" to you?
and
you rate the summersongs2k in the "gay" category, but he was singing those with intense emotion. so...?
also, what about the old live version of butterfly thats out there, clearly from the "old" period, but rivers cant see how that singing style could be anything but "gay" by your definition.

blue and pinkerton had very similar vocals. honestly, i cant tell much difference at all. the pre-blue demos had an awesome voice too. i would not mind the return of that at all.

here's what you do asschun: tell rivers to listen to the version of superstar he just released to us. then tell him to listen to keep fishin from pointfest or any live version of december. ask him if he hears how nasal he sounds in the new songs and if he hears how much energy he put into superstar. ask him why he doesnt put the same energy into the new stuff if he thinks its so much better than the sk2 songs. but dont ask like that cause it sounds assholeish. thats the best i can do.

Honestly, when all is said and done, you can still tell that it's Rivers Cuomo singing over all three albums. It changed a little bit, but if the trend is leaning towards Rivers singing like he used to, I'm cool. I don't care if he sounds like a seasick elephant* as long as he sings about something with meaning.

From reading gogokain's email and asschun's.
I find it surprising that the way that Rivers' feels about his music is totally different from what the fans perceive it to be.
Our assumptions are way off.
And seeing that He is making an effort to understand us as fans we can finally have some confirmation rather then drawing a million assumptions about weezer and going nuts.

He's singing like a generic singer. Like that faggot on the Ashley Kate whatever cover of IitS. Except he can't, and it just comes off with that stupid little quiver that he used to use in the right places, except he uses it all the time, and it makes the songs sound lifeless and dull. He's using his voice as another instrument. At least that's what I got out of it. Like he's more concerned about singing the right note than he is entertaining or conveying emotion. Which sucks.
That's funny when he mentioned the braces thing, I remember when I said something about that I got the shit ripped out of me.

haha! It sounds like they're messing with you now. If not though, it's pretty cool that Rivers is so interested in what his fans think... Good luck with all those comparisons.
As far as the current Blue album performances though, in my opinion, they're pretty close to how he always has sang them.

asschun. Tell 'em to listen to the "ee" "uh" "ay" and "ah" of syllables Rivers sings in each of those songs. That's the best way to hear a difference between the two of Rivers' voices. The newer one is definitely more nasal, but it's true that the difference isn't so pronounced unless he's singing words with the above sounds in them. I mean, the opening lines of Photograph, for instance, sound like old Rivers because they aren't as heavily dependent on stretched-out words as the whinier songs are, like Butterfly or I Do.
Listen to Butterfly again, with "fresh ears" as Karl put it. It sounds kinda nasal anyway... doesn't it?

Yeah.
I'm sure that Rivers is waiting with baited-breath for a grade-A douchebag such as yourself's latest opinions on his singing.
Why wouldn't he hinge his vocal style on the inarticulate ramblings of someone who so eloquently describes music as "gay" or "not gay"?
Wake up. Karl is tooling on you.
Now go listen to Hash Pipe and Surf Wax America head-to-head 500 times, and write an essay on the subtle gayness, or lack thereof, in each.

hey, i know it looks like i'm new but i used to post here a long time ago, finally resigned up. i'm a weezer fan from way back.
anyway why did rivers pick those certain songs to compare. why can't you compare say jamie or suzanne or pinkerton for that matter with the newer songs. just as long you do it with fresh ears.
The way he plays the blue songs now isn't near as well as he use to. Its not at all. get some recordings and take a listen yourselves. If Rivers wants to see a prime example of the what he isn't doing right anymore he needs to ask carl to pull out a recording of the sonic sessions for him to listen to. Rivers doesn't sing like that anymore and it sucks because he has great potential.
Another thing that i can't believe you guys haven't figured out is the biggest reason for him singing differently. His braces of course. When you change what the inside of you mouth is like it changes the way the sound waves vibrate as they come out. Its scientifically proven. Its physics. Thats why most singers won't get braces even if they need them.

unfortunately i have heard bootlegs from 96 and 01 and i could not find a noticeable difference in his voice at all
i now firmly believe that rivers can CHANGE his voice
this is not a all too uncommon thing many singers have different voices in which they alternate in singing(billy corgan for example)
i could put both through a voice recognition program like dragon but i would have to isolate the voice.
