Our Butterflies

Butterflies are a symbol of change, joy and color. Their flight appears as dancing, and a reminder not to take things so seriously, to get up and move, for if you can move you can dance, and dance brings joy.

The butterfly is a powerful symbol for transformation. The lovely, delicate butterfly, which metamorphoses from a caterpillar, leaves the safety of the cocoon in its new form. A strong symbol for anyone contemplating, or in the midst of, a major change and a potent symbol of rebirth and renewal, particularly of the spiritual self.

The symbol of the butterfly is equally applicable to profound personal changes within this life, especially those that involve spiritual growth. Change and transformation are inevitable for us all, but it does not have to be traumatic. Rebirth is a phenomenon that we may encounter numerous times as we pass through the various stages of life and acquire a new sense of self. The butterfly is a reminder to make changes when the opportunity arises.

The fragile, short-lived butterfly has become an emblem of the immortality and indestructibility of the spirit. As Ted Andrews wrote in Animal Speak, "Butterflies bring color and joy with them." That color and joy is ours to savor as long as we respect and appreciate these fragile miracles.
