BreadCrumb® is a portable wireless device
that uses the IEEE 802.11b protocol; also known as WiFi.
BreadCrumbs can mesh with peers as well as associate with
clients in Infrastructure or Ad-Hoc mode. Some of the unique
features of BreadCrumbs is that they are adaptable to various
environments in terms of providing connectivity and flexible
enough to support a variety of data applications. This makes
them suitable for emergency applications typical for First
Responders, Fire Fighters, Police and the Armed forces. This
generic nature of BreadCrumbs has given opportunities to connect
remote places and especially those from which a large amount of
information is to be received.
Apart from rapid deployments and quick connectivity, BreadCrumbs
can also be used as permanent installations in urban areas.
These settings can be used for daily industrial applications to
provide broadband connectivity or as backup systems in case of
failure of primary links.
Each BreadCrumb® device has two 802.11b
wireless NICs and one externally accessible Ethernet port, which
is optional. The wireless NICs enable the BreadCrumb®
components to communicate and form the wireless LAN, as well as
wireless clients to connect and communicate. The Ethernet port
provides hardwired connections for auxiliary network devices,
clients, and connection to gateway devices. The Ethernet port
also provides a secure connection for some device configuration
options which are not available through wireless connections.
