Trellis Construction

A variety of woods can be used to construct your trellis. Willow, saskatoon, poplar, birch, alder, cranberry or ash can be used. Some are longer lasting than others. The main requirement is to use green, flexible limbs for the arched parts. Wood that is less flexible can be use for the straight crosspieces. Try to use fresh materials. When cutting, cut the twigs with care using only sharp cutting tools. Never rip or tear the branches, as this can destroy the plant. You should harvest only as much wood as needed to construct your trellis. It's also advisable to examine the wood for insects or larvae.
