After many years of flying pattern I decided that it was about time to build a giant scale war bird. Since one of my first plastic models that I built when I was a kid was a SBD-3 Dauntless, I figured that this would be an excellent choice. Besides who doesn't love those dive brakes!
Over the next couple of years, this web page will document my build of the 100" Ziroli SBD-3 Dauntless that I selected for this project. Nick Ziroli has been producing some of the best plans and accessories for the true scale builder over the years. His airplanes can be seen in the winner's circle at many Scale Masters and Top Gun events.
The next step I took was to invest the money in a full wood kit and following the links on the Ziroli web site I contacted Larry at Precision Cut Kits. Larry produces his Laserline complete wood kits and I was very happy when he told me that he had one in stock like most of his product line. The kit arrived all the way from New Jersey via USPS within a couple of weeks. I was totally amazed at the quality of the product that Larry and his team produces. If you are going to build a scale project, check out Precision Cut Kits first as you won't be disappointed.
At this time I am planning on using a Zenoah GT-80 Twin (4.88 cu in) as this motor seems to be the builders choice of the Ziroli SBD-3 Dauntless. A set of Sierra Giant Scale SBD-3 Dauntless retracts are planned for this model as the folks at Ziroli highly recommend them for their durability and true scale design.
