  Birth Notes:

We have the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) death certificate for John's wife Jean Thomson. By using this information we have been able to determine that we have the correct family burial plot. We are taking the dates from the monumental inscriptions and death certificates as the most accurate information, as we do not have actual birth information, but do have baptism certificate from the Old Parish Records (OPR). According to the monumental inscription (MI), John was 84 when he died, that would make him born about 1761. As the burial monument was erected by Francis and Isabella Berry, we feel the headstone was not put in place until some years after John's death, if this was the case it also brings into question the miscued dates on the monument, as in many cases they did not have actual paper copies of the person's vital records, so the remaining family members relied on their own memories for birth, death and anniversaries and or someone's Bible if one has kept it up to date.
