Paul is currently a Professor in the Department of Renewable Resources at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, CANADA where he has worked and studied for the last 31 years.
Paul is a registered professional forester (Alberta: #63) and has been recognized by the Association of British Columbia Forest Professional (VF001). Paul has also been certified as a senior ecologist by the Ecological Society of America. He teaches in the areas of forest fire management and ecology. His research interests have ranged from fire effects on wildlife habitat, specifically those habitats used by bighorn sheep, sharp-tailed grouse, moose, elk, fisher, and caribou, to fireline productivity, to the cost effectiveness of using infrared technology in fire suppression, to fire prevention, to predicting fuel loadings.
He has personally supervised over 20 graduate students, and has published over 150 manuscripts, of which more than 45 are referred journal articles. Attached is an abbreviated list of some of his more recent publications. He served as the Associate Editor - Fire for the Forestry Chronicle for over 10 years.
Paul consults in the area of fire cause determination, fire disturbance appraisal, the ecological effects of fire and the probability of loss. He has been recognized as an expert in the area of fire investigation in Montana, California, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario and British Columbia. He has served as an expert witness in courts in Alberta, British Columbia, Montana and Ontario. He has co-authored more that 10 forest fire management plans for parks, native reserves or Metis settlements in Alberta.
Paul is the recipient of the Tree of Life Award (2001) and the Canadian Forestry Achievement Award (2005) as sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Forestry.
