Raj received training on the bansuri and sitar from the music maestros
Sri K.P. Shenoy and Sri N.R. Rama Rao in Bangalore, India. He has given many
performances in India, Canada, and Brazil. In Calgary, he has performed for the
University of Calgary, the India-Canada Association and affiliated societies,
the City of Calgary, the Calgary Multicultural Centre, and the Glenbow Museum.
His arrangements have included innovative combinations of many styles of
instruments and music.
Utpal is
an expert percussionist with the tabla and the pakhawaj or mridang (drums of
India). He studied voice and the tabla in India, and is active in local music
circles playing bluegrass and jazz, as well as accompanying several artists. He
has performed in several CDs with Canadian Flamenco, Latino, and Celtic
musicians, and with the Calgary Boys' Choir (Silver Anniversary CD).
Raj and
Utpal have been performing together in Calgary for over 25 years. They regularly
provide guest lecture-demonstrations in courses on South Asia and World Music
at the University of Calgary. Their music has been licensed to several
prestigious museums as well as yoga and meditation schools. They have
collaborated with several musicians of different genres, and firmly believe
that music transcends all boundaries!
