June 1, 2004

Although we missed seeing John, Gloria, Jim and Kim this morning we did get to meet Matthew Clark of Mountain Mecca who was a guest of Greer. Doug also introduced our guest speakers, Mairuth and Dominick Sarsfield.

David tells us that we sold $6,580 in Engine Raffle tickets at Cloverdale this past weekend. This year tickets are $10 each or 3 for $20 and the $20 tickets seem to be the best sellers. David passed around a print out of the email we all received a few weeks ago with the schedule of events for the engine lottery. There are 30 events. Each requires 3 Rotarians which makes 90 Rotarian/days. So far 3 Rotarian Days are filled plus any that signed the sheet that went around this morning. This is our largest fundraiser and gives us the financial resources to make a difference in our community. Please, if you haven't already done so, sign up for at least 3 events. As Diana says, those who don't should be expecting a phone call.

Bev Galley, who has already attended several meetings, has been proposed for membership and will be joining us soon.

President Hilda thanked those who helped with our club presence at the Bouncy Castle Family Day attraction and those who made it out to the Big Bike for Heart and Stroke event. That project raised $1,065.

President Hilda presented Dana with a Spirit of Rotary print in recognition of her birthday and told us that today is John's birthday. As well, Kim and Jill have an anniversary coming up on June 3. Peter and Diane have their's on June 10.

Our speakers this morning were Mairuth and Dominick Sarsfield who spoke to us of their interesting careers in international work of various kinds. Mairuth's career was with External Affairs and the United Nations. She shared stories of a project connected with an international conference to have children born June 6 around the world each plant a tree. Part of the promotion of that event was to get several participating countries to produce and distribute a publicity poster. She told us interesting stories about getting the Swiss to publish a poster so the Russians wouldn't and other techniques used to make the event a success. After retirement, Mairuth wrote a novel "No Crystal Stair" for which one can find many references on the web. Autographed copies were offered.

Dominick Sarsfield, a chartered accountant by profession, was quick to explain that, though born in London, he is from Ireland. He came to Canada in 1967 but it seems that from then until his retirement he spent his time most everywhere but Canada including work with CIDA in Kenya, travels everywhere with George Hees and service in Papua New Guinea as it became independant. He also served in Canada with the Anti Inflation Board during the Trudeau years.

In the brief time available to our speakers, they were able to give us an interesting glimpse into the their careers in international service.
