System File CheckerThis simple procedure will allow you to replace corrupt or missing files on your Windows 98se Operating System. The procedure is simple and straighforward and I have included illustrations to help you along. Whenever your computer starts up, then informs you that a certain file is damaged or missing, this is a simple and easy first step to take to repair the fault, before you decide on more drastic measures. |

Step 1Begin by clicking the Start button, then Run.... In the "Open:" text window type sfc then click OK. You will see the following dialog box appear. Select Extract one file from installation disk. Then, as it says, specify the system file you want to restore. You can browse to a file if you know where it is but if it is missing this is pointless. Instead merely type in the name of the file, being careful to be exact, then click Start. You will see the following dialog box appear. |
Step 2As shown in the dialog box to the right, indicate where the file is to be found. I have chosen my .cab files saved on my hard drive. If you do not have the .cab files on your system you can insert your Windows 98se installation disc and Browse to it. Next, indicate where the file is to be installed. In my example I have indicated that vnetsup.vxd is to be installed in C:\Windows\System. Once you have done this click OK to proceed. |
Step 3You will now be prompted as to whether you wish to save a backup of the file. This takes almost no disc space so allow it to be saved to the indicated folder then click OK. You will then see the next box appear. |
Step 4Click OK and the process is finished. If necessary, you can repeat this procedure until all needed files have been restored. |
