~ I Can Help You Lose Weight ~

Here are three studies that show that hypnosis supports weight loss  AND more importantly long term weight loss.

Take note all those reading this who want to keep the weight off once they've lost it!

Study #1: Bolocofsky, Spinler, Coulthard (1985). Effectiveness of hypnosis as an adjunct to behavioral weight management. Journal of Clinical Psychology, 41 (1), 35-41.

Proof hypnosis works:  109 people were divided into two groups for a 9 week study. Both groups were given the same diet and exercise treatment, the second group was given hypnosis for reinforcement.  After 9 weeks both groups lost weight. This is what happened after the 8 month and 2-year follow-ups. The first group did not lose anymore weight and in fact gained most of their weight back. The hypnosis group, however, continued to lose weight during both intervals and the studies showed that many more people in the hypnosis group met their long term weight loss goals. Clearly, hypnosis helps you to stick to your diet and exercise plan!

Study #2: Cochrane, Friesen (1986) Hypnotherapy in weight loss treatment. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 54, 489-492.

Proof hypnosis works:  60 females at least 20% overweight and not involved in other treatment were asked about their family background, educational background, and their belief as to their hypnotizability.  They were split into two groups. Both groups were given weight loss behavioral treatments and counseling, but only one group was given hypnosis. The group using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds at the 6 month follow-up. The other group only lost half of a pound. They also found that hypnotizability and social and educational backgrounds had nothing to do with the results.

Study #3: Hirsch (1996) Hypnotic enhancement of cognitive-behavioral weight loss treatments. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 64 (3), 517-519.

Proof hypnosis works: The results of the two studies just mentioned and other studies were confirmed. In the studies of no hypnosis versus hypnosis the average short term weight loss was 6 pounds for those not using hypnosis and 11.83 pounds for those using hypnosis.  But even more impressive is that over the long term the average weight loss without hypnosis stayed at 6 pounds, but with hypnosis it leapt to 14.88 pounds. This indicates that the effects of hypnosis seem to continue over time.

How Hypnosis Works.

With hypnosis, you have a relaxed, focused awareness, having entered into a state of increased suggestibility where the conscious and subconscious (or unconscious) minds separate their association or dissociate. You're not asleep. When you are sleeping you are unconscious and can't hear anything.  When you're in this relaxed state, you are highly sensitive and your subconscious mind is more likely to accept suggestions without objections arising in your conscious mind.  These suggestions then take hold so that your thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes are permanently changed.  All action comes from someone's thoughts.  When you think differently, you'll behave differently...and get the results that you want.

I want to dispel right now the 6 major myths that surround hypnosis.

Myth #1: You lose consciousness in hypnosis.

Fact:  Hypnosis is a state of relaxation where you're always aware of what's going on around you.  You have full control over whether you accept or reject a suggestion. In fact, you can come out of hypnosis any time...if you wanted to.

Myth #2: Hypnotized people do weird things.

Fact:  The people who believe this have seen or heard about a stage hypnosis show.  Stage hypnosis is a form of entertainment, not therapy. Hypnosis in hypnotherapy is designed to permanently change your life for the better.  Rest assured you won't do anything you wouldn't normally do.

Myth #3: You're "under" my power

Fact:  You cannot be hypnotized against your will.  Nobody can be hypnotized to do anything they wouldn't normally do or that isn't beneficial to them.

Myth #4: People reveal their deepest, darkest secrets in hypnosis

Fact:  You won't do anything in hypnosis that you wouldn't normally do outside of hypnosis. Your secrets are safe.

Myth #5: People get stuck in hypnosis

Fact:  Can't happen!  Your mind always functions in your best interests.  If you're deep in hypnosis and for some reason I don't bring you out of hypnosis, you'd simply fall asleep or if you realize that no one is speaking your mind would bring you back to conscious awareness.

Myth #6: Some people can't be hypnotized

Fact: All normal people can be hypnotized to some extent. People with an I.Q. less than 70, or in an active state of psychosis, or who are senile are generally not able to be hypnotized. So, if you're reading this, you can be hypnotized.  It's not unusual for people to think they weren't hypnotized during a session as there is no hypnotized feeling, however, after the session, they later report noticing positive changes in their lives. If you've ever cried over a sad part in a book or a movie then you've been hypnotized.
