Francis Anne Hopkins was the wife of
Edward Martin Hopkins, secretary to Sir George Simpson, Superintendent General
of the Hudson's Bay Company. HBC
On several occasions she accompanied
her husband and Sir George Simpson on their inspection tours to the outposts
of the HBC.
Francis Anne created several paintings that included canoes and it
is likely that the woman seen within this painting and some of the others, is
the artist herself. Here she appears to be holding a water lily which
has been plucked from the water by one of the men in the canoe.
Original
work by the artist is held at the Canadian
Archives
