Printing from the internet
Before copying or printing anything from the internet everyone
must understand the issues of copyrighted
works and intellectual ownership
because although some web pages give permission to copy most do not! 1.
There are generally two good reasons for using print preview before
printing web pages directly from the internet:
- To print
one specific page from a potentially multi-page website.
Some sites have very long web pages. If you print without checking the
page size in print preview it is possible you are sending a 20-30 page
document to the printer when you only need one page from the middle.
Use print preview to locate the specific information you need and then
you can print out only the required page(s).
- To see if an image
will fit on a page or if it is so big that it splits across
several sheets of paper.
Notice
that only three quarters of this image actually fits on a regular 8
1/2 by 11 inch sheet. The hands would print on a different sheet.
Use
print preview to see this example of an image that is too big to
print: http://www2.biblinat.gouv.qc.ca/cargeo/high/trba0118_n.jpg
Notice that print preview shows that only the corner of the page
will print and the image doesn't even separate into smaller pages. (Caution.
Requirement for PC: 128MB RAM or more).
2.
Due to time constraints and bandwidth issues, it is often preferable to
temporarily save text and or images onto a disk for use later, rather
than printing directly from the internet.
You can...
- save the html page
- save only the graphics
- save
the results of an internet search to check the links later
- email
a web page to yourself or to a friend. The web page stays in your
email until you erase it.
3.
It is possible to Copy and Paste text and/or images into a word processor.
There are two reason for doing this
- for selective printing.
- for
off line study
- to resize a large image
(Large
images can be reduced to a manageable size by saving them to disk and
inserting them into a Word document. The image automatically resizes
to fit the document page. )
There
are two ways to do this:
A.
Select the image or text to be copies. Click Edit--> Copy. Open the
word pro. Click on the page to place the cursor. Click Edit--> paste.
B.
Or: Right click on the required image. From the drop down context menu,
select save picture as, navigate to the required folder on your computer
and press enter or click save.
