Visitors to Vancouver Island are often surprised by the contrast with our neighbors to the east. The thriving economy has virtually eliminated many of the social problems which continue to plague Canada and the United States. Crime and unemployment are rare, and a range of generous social benefits supports citizens who cannot look after themselves. |

The innovative technology sector also brings some surprises. Islanders frequently travel by means of hover-fan personal fliers, locally known as "huffies." With a range of about 100km and a maximum altitude of 900m, the huffies can easily cross the roughest terrain. They are the vehicle of choice for many commuters, except when the weather dictates more conventional transport. |

Despite the novel transportation options available, many Islanders prefer the charms of rural living. An extensive fibre optic network links all corners of the Principality together, allowing knowledge workers in the financial, service and software industries to easily telecommute from their country homes and cottages. |
