Notes: Matthew Clapham b. 5 Sep 1802:
Q:  There are floating around two dates of marriage of Matthew to Margaret
         ... 1) 8 Oct 1831, and 2) 11 Oct 1831?
Much of the descendents' data for Matthew and his offspring was taken (in year 2000) from a listing of data compiled by (and in the possession of) Mary Christine Reid.  This data originated from family data and discussions with her then 80 year old mother Ethel Maud Nicholson-Reid who was then still very competent.
This data was augmented with more detailed info from:
      1. Alice Peters residing near Caboolture, north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
      2. Peter Lockey, who resides in County Durham, and has provided Alice with much data.

"James established his residence in South Shields in Durham County a few miles across the River Tyne from Newcastle." [Robert Mayo]

James and his brother-in-law William Clapham sailed May 25, 1870 on the Inman Line Royal Mail Steamer "City of Chester" from Liverpool via Queenstown [near Cobh, Ireland] to New York.  The vessel's Captain was Robert Leitch, Purser Thomas Kinsey, and the Surgeon F. A. Davey.  William and James purpose was to investigate land prices and prospects in the Carolina's.  [see letters, James to his wife Mary Ann Clapham]

A book was written about the "Beautiful Plains" district of the Province of Manitoba wherein the Nicholsons, Homers and Yerexs are discussed.  One surprise to me was that James F. Nicholson had purchased the land prior to it being given / sold to two of his sons who setled near Neepawa, Manitoba in 1888; this would mean he came to Canada and visited Manitoba having travelled through Quebec and Ontario to reach Manitoba.  [He did not settle there but went back to South Shields, Durham, and Exmouth, Devon where he and Mary Ann had a rather marvelous home, see picture.]

To quote the text
"James F. Nicholson (1830-1907) from Hexham, Durham County, Northumberland in the northeast of England came to Manitoba in 1888.  He purchased land, the north half of 3-15-16 in the Rural Muncipality of Rosedale, from the Northwest Mortgage and Loan Company.  He was the first Nicholson in the Neepawa and Franklin area.
"Edward William Nicholson (1863-1937), the eldest son, came to Canada in 1887 to live at Strathroy, Ontario.  In 1889 he married Lillian Hoskin of Strathroy, and that same year came to Neepawa.  Edward bought the farm from his father and was the first of the Nicholsons to actually make his home in the area.  Mrs. Nicholson ...
"Frederick James Nicholson (1869-1946), the second son of James to come to Canada, arrived here in 1893.  He lived with his brother Edward until 1897 when he bought his own land, NW 20-16-16 in the Rural Municipality of Rosedale."  [ [June 2002 - MRP]
