Prairie Giant vs. History |
Prairie Giant versus History What Jimmy Gardiner really said (Speech in 1929 before his defeat to Anderson) “I would say that, as the Prime Minister of this Province, I would leave public life in disgrace and dishonour if I were to betray the principles which underly the lasting settlement which has been established in this Province resting on the good feeling that exists as between peoples of different nationality and race … though we were to face political defeat in accomplishing it, (I) believe we are doing the proper thing in defending the principles I am proclaiming tonight”. What Biographers wrote (Relentless Liberal - Norman Ward and David Smith 1990) Regarding the Klan, “from the start he (Gardiner) never faltered in opposing it”. However, his opponents made “assertions about Catholic dominance of the Liberals and their government, about insidious ethnics and religious elements undermining the school system, and alien forces threatening Saskatchewan’s clean British way of life. He continued to counter these and similar charges … with facts.” Further, regarding Gardiner’s 1929 speech, “If Gardiner had spoken so loftily only in public his speech might have been dismissed as rhetoric, but his private record on the combined Conservative-Orange Lodge-Klan pressure on the school system is unflawed.” Gardiner’s opponents feared that “the foundations of civilisation in the west” were threatened and further that “ the dangerous immigrants from Europe, created a veritable tidal wave certain to overcome the decent if left unchecked.” What Prairie Giant’s Jimmy Gardiner, representing a United government said “I want to make sure people of this Province are armed with the Truth. First I ask you what do we know about these strikers? We know that almost none of them were born in this country. We know that some of the people associated … the soviet international of Russia. This is not conjecture. This is a proven fact … These foreign elements are attacking our very liberty, our very democracy, our very identity as Canadians, and as subjects of the British Empire. We will not give into…”
