The Pulp, Paper & Woodworkers
of Canada Union (PPWC) is a group of folks who believe that there can be
such a thing as a Democratic, Constitutional, Member-run organization that
will nurture the interests of it's members as the center of its focus.
The PPWC was formed in 1963 by five British
Columbia locals of an international union after years of struggling to
obtain Canadian rights and membership control.
The five locals broke away following evidence
of corruption in the international leadership. Part of this leadership
was finally convicted and sentenced in early 1979. In 1964, 20,000 members
in western USA also left to form their own union, and the PPWC has maintained
a fraternal relationship with them.
The years have not
been easy ones. Our growth was fiercely opposed by the international union
leaders, assisted by the Canadian Labour Congress. Despite this, we have
grown to 6000 members in B.C.
The Kamloops Local
(#10) was certified on January 4th of 1974, and was de-certified,
by the LRB, on April 16, 2003.
