Hokuto no Ken, chapter 2, "The Dragon and the Tiger" [2 of 6]

TV Episodes 30 - 32: Jagi

Manga volumes: 5

Ken sets out in search of his brother Jagi, leaving Bat and Lynn
in the care of Rei. As they watch Ken depart, the village chief
tells Mamiya she should stop worrying about the village, and
think only of her own happiness. "It's no use," she explains;
the memory of Yuria causes Ken to seek nothing but battle.

In another village, Jagi's men are forcing victims to saw the
heads off of those who cannot identify a statue of "The man with
seven scars." Ken arrives, smashing the statue: "Allow me to en-
lighten you. His name is Jagi, a man I called brother!"

In a flashback, Ryuken is testing Ken and Jagi. The two are to
strike the pressure points outlined on each other's bodies. Jagi
cheats, and beats Ken viciously; however, Ken had already struck
each of the circles. After Jagi departs, boasting of his
strength, Ryuken asks: "Kenshiro, why did you let him win? Is it
because he is your older brother?" "Your kindness will bring you
misfortune," he warns.

Jagi kills a man, because he resembles Kenshiro. As he walks
through town, his thugs announce him as Lord Kenshiro, inheritor
of Hokuto Shinken. Mako, a crippled boy, accidentally bumps into
one of Jagi's men. Due to his disability, Mako is dependent on
his younger brother, Aki. Jagi is enraged that Aki is superior
to his older brother, and expels him from the city with a large
stone chained to his leg.

Kenshiro finds the boy, and returns him to the city, where Mako
waits in ambush with a crossbow. Ken realizes that the boy is
under Jagi's control, and will die unless he shoots Ken. After
allowing him to shoot, Ken reverses the spell placed on the boy.

Kenshiro and Jagi finally meet, and move to the top of a skys-
craper for their fight. "Did you really think you beat me that
time?" asks Jagi.

Jagi

In a flashback, one of Jagi's men tell him Kenshiro has been
selected as the inheritor of the Hokuto Shinken style. Jagi is
enraged, and goes first to his elder brothers, who ignore his
ravings. As Ken works out, we hear the words of his father: "The
reason Hokuto Shinken has only one successor is because it is an
invincible, lethal style. Do not use it unwisely; if a foolish
man became the successor, this world might perish..." Jagi enters
Ken's room, and beats him at gunpoint. Ken grabs Jagi by the
face, and orders him to leave. As Ken turns his back, Jagi
lashes out, but his leg slips at a crucial moment, and Ken
strikes him with a devastating barrage of punches.

Back on the rooftop, Jagi declares: "This time, I won't slip."
"You still don't realize," Ken replies, "I had taken control of
your legs." As the two fight, Jagi boasts that he was the one
who convinced Shin to kidnap Yuria. This revelation enrages Ken,
boosting his power tremendously. As Ken prepares to kill Jagi,
he delivers blows for the anger of four people wronged by Jagi:
first for Shin, then for Yuria, next for Mako, and finally, for
himself. As he dies, Jagi taunts Ken: "This is the beginning of
your trip to hell! Have you forgotten your other two brothers?"
