Jill and Judy Mackenzie borrowed $5000 to buy the cow and then sold spots at $110 each to women who own registered brands and the brand would be painted on the cow. Brandy was to have 50 spots paid to cover the cost of the cow. A month later they had sold 175 spots. Profits raised at an auction to be held at the Calgary Stampede Grounds on October 28 will be donated to the Western Heritage Centre in Cochrane, Alberta. (Western Producer)

The Udderly Art initiative invites interested individuals and companies to purchase a 90lb, life-size, fiberglass cow for $5000. These cows will subsequently be matched with a local artist who will create a work of art from the life size model. Finally, the finished cows, complete with plaques to recognize "cattle owners" and artists, will be strategically placed throughout Calgary. All proceeds go directly to the charity of the owner's choice. In this way, Udderly Art provides much needed exposure for Calgary artists, great publicity for donors, and windfall funding for worthy charities.
On October 28th, at the completion of the Udderly Art project, some of the cows will be auctioned off at a year-end Cattle Auction Gala to be held at Stampede Park.
Udderly Art is a non-profit organization which is currently co-ordinating the manufacture, printing, locations and publicity for all of the colourful cows which will be a part of the program. The organization is staffed and managed entirely by volunteers. Better get a "mooove" on!
$5,000 is for the cow, insurance for theft, damage & liability, Concrete base for the cow, plaque, moving and print. There is very little left over after that. The artist fees are on top of that and they are negotiated between the owner of the cow and the artist.
The owner of the cow chooses the charity they wish to have their funds go to. We are looking into the best solutions for people to buy cows. At present the person who buys the cow, gets the cow for their money. The owner of the cow, who receives the money, passes the money to the charity and the charity issues the original owner the tax receipt. For serious buyers we are asking them to get their best tax advice from their accountants, as there are other ways of going about the buying and selling.
Best agriculture promotion in years!
