Album Notes

first released March 7, 1988

The Beatles' discography spans a period in which the Tin Pan Alley / Bobbysoxer mentality of the previous generation gave way to modern business practices, where the artist has some say in what gets done with their catalog. (You can thank the Fabs themselves for most of that change, but that's neither here nor there.) As a result, the Beatles' releases were extremely haphazard; EPs, LPs, singles, special promo releases, mono and stereo mixes of the same songs, redubbed tunes, different packaging in every country, etc. etc. Figuring it all out was a task suited to only the most die-hard collector.

When it became obvious that vinyl records were soon to go the way of the wax cylinder and the 78, Capitol decided that it would be best to finally collect all the non-album tracks in one place. Hence, Past Masters One and Two. While fans griped about the packaging, which was literally as plain as black and white, the CDs are about all one could expect from a post-Apple, pre-Apple Beatle juggernaut; it was enough for most of us to finally have these songs without having to buy ten or twelve albums. And in digital quality, yet!

So, PM 1 and 2 take their place as albums 14 and 15 in the modern age. But while it might be tempting to write them off as another collection of odds and sods, the fact is, the Beatles straddled those above-mentioned eras so completely that they have several classic singles never contained on an officially released album. These two CDs contain oddities like "Sie Liebt Dich", but they also give you "Hey Jude", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "She Loves You" -- not only essential parts of the Beatle legacy, but parts of the summit. For the record, and as they say on TV commercials for similar products, here's what you get!

The Singles

"Day Tripper" / "We Can Work It Out"
"Paperback Writer" / "Rain"
"Lady Madonna" / "Inner Light, The"
"Hey Jude" / "Revolution"
"Get Back" (single version) / "Don't Let Me Down"
"The Ballad Of John And Yoko" / "Old Brown Shoe"
"Let It Be" (single version) / "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)"

Alternate Mixes

"Across The Universe" (the original World Wildlife Fund version)

Song Notes

Day Tripper Another riff-centered classic, setting the standard for numerous rock classics: note how the riff keeps appearing at dramatic moments, and how it's bolstered by the bassline. For the record, John never intended the lyrics to call teh subject a "prick teaser", per se, but he certainly got as close as he could. Naughty boy.

We Can Work It Out The B-side (or double A, depending). A gentle folkish number, with what is supposed to be the first change in time signature on a Beatle record. Supposedly, John came up with the bridge... "Life is very short..."

Paperback Writer The Beatles' monster riff song of their mid-Sixties output (maybe of all their output). A typically engaging bit of sardonic fiction from Paul, and a sign that social commentary, even some as embryonic as this, was possible and profitable. That is "Frere Jacques" being sung in the background vocals. Possibly the kickoff to the Beatles' "middle period".

Rain Hands down, one of the finest songs ever recorded -- a metaphorical treatise on the status quo, set to a track that is so flawless it sounds like the product of one set of hands, not four. Ringo himself considers it far and away his best-ever drum performance, and Paul's bass is no less than amazing. John had the idea of running the tape backwards at the end after accidentally threading a vocal track backwards one day.

Lady Madonna Paul's fantastic ode to Fats Domino, but with typically Paulie storyline, steeped in everyday struggle and Catholic imagery. Featuring one of Ringo's all-time funkiest beats at the end. Fats repaid the homage by covering this and "...Me And My Monkey."

The Inner Light The third in George's Indian troika usually gets a bad rap, but it's actually melodically superior to the other two entries ("Love You To" and "Within You Without You"). Also features nice harmonies from the lads and some wonderful (and very Eastern) backing on the verses.

Hey Jude (Original Title: Hey Jules) The A-side of what was quite possibly the band's greatest 45; it contained high points for John and Paul's songwriting, and remain testaments as to how one band can occupy such varied musical territory. Originally written by Paul about Julian, John's son (hence the original title) but it soon became bigger than that. John insisted that Paul leave in the nonsense, place-marking line about "the movement you need". Paul vamps like a man posessed at the end, turning in his finest vocal ever. A monolith in the fields of Rock and Roll, and an incredibly, daringly long single, even by today's standards.

Revolution The electric, sped-up version of John's anti-revolutionary polemic, and far superior for it. Changed only so that a single could be gotten from it, but Thank God; this is a real world-championship jam. That incredible sound is supposedly attributable to George and John scraping the paint off of a certain guitar. Or so they claim. Nicky Hopkins on electric piano.

Get Back (single version) The single version of the classic shuffling Paul boogie. Does not feature the tacked-on rooftop ending, or rehearsal beginning, like the album version, but it DOES include the "Your mama's waiting for you" ending. Otherwise, it's almost identical.

Don't Let Me Down One of John's most heartfelt odes to Yoko. A searching, yearning, and tender expression of the vulnerability of new love. A standout of the Rooftop Concert. So why, oh why, was it relegated to a B-side?

The Ballad Of John And Yoko An extremely controversial (but fun!) look into the way John And Yoko's media messages got misunderstood by the media themselves. Banned on many stations because of the "blasphemous" allusions to Christ and the crucifixion. This track consists entirely of John and Paul, splitting the instruments and vocals. That's Paul on drums. (Some say you can hear John call Peter Brown's office in the background of this track. I've yet to hear it. Can you?)

Old Brown Shoe Another George song fallen by the wayside, this odd little number essays The Quiet One's off-kilter blues a lot better than "For You Blue". It's still not very well known among casual fans, though. More's the pity. Dig George's bottleneck-sounding guitar, which is actually a regular guitar run through a Leslie speaker.

Across The Universe (World Wildlife Fund version) The original version of this Let It Be highlight isn't much better produced than the more familiar, Spectorized version. It's too fast, the wildlife effects are gratuitous (it was recorded for the WWF charity album), and the backing vocals provided by two female fans hanging around the studio (the "Apple Scruffs" of lore) are childlike and grating. Still a fine song, however.

Let It Be To me, this single version is inferior to the Spector version on LIB, mainly because of two things: This song actually got a tasteful arrangement from Phil, unlike "Long and Winding Road", and 2) The album version has the far superior George guitar solo. Now, as to whether or not you like Ringo's tribal drums in the last verse...

You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) The one real attempt the Beatles made at channeling the humor of their public personas into a song. And it's hilarious, both highbrow and lowbrow at the same time, with bits of vaudevillian parody interspersed. The biggest surprise is how great the music actually is, especially in the beginning: it almost seems a waste of a good song. But they do sound like they're having fun; and considering everything they've given to us, I think it's the least we can do.

Day Tripper (Lennon/McCartney)

Got a good reason for taking the easy way out
Got a good reason for taking the easy way out now

She was a day tripper, a one way ticket yea
It took me so long to find out, and I found out

She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there
She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there now

Tried to please her, she only played one night stands
Tried to please her, she only played one night stands now

She was a day tripper, a Sunday driver yea
Took me so long to find out, and I found out

We Can Work It Out (Lennon/McCartney)

Try to see it my way,
Do I have to keep on talking till I can't go on?
While you see it your way,
Run the risk of knowing that our love may soon be gone.
We can work it out,
We can work it out.
Think of what you're saying.
You can get it wrong and still you think that it's alright.
Think of what I'm saying,
We can work it out and get it straight, or say good night.
We can work it out,
We can work it out.
Life is very short, and there's no time
For fussing and fighting, my friend.
I have always thought that it's a crime,
So I will ask you once again.
Try to see it my way,
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong.
While you see it your way
There's a chance that we may fall apart before too long.
We can work it out,
We can work it out.

Paperback Writer (Lennon/McCartney)

Paperback writer

Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
Based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.

It's the dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn't understand.
His son is working for the Daily Mail,
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.

Paperback writer

It's a thousand pages, give or take a few,
I'll be writing more in a week or two.
I can make it longer if you like the style,
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.

If you really like it you can have the rights,
It could make a million for you overnight.
If you must return it, you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.

Paperback writer

Paperback writer - paperback writer
Paperback writer - paperback writer

To the songs

Rain (Lennon/McCartney)

If the rain comes they run and hide their heads.
They might as well be dead.
If the rain comes, if the rain comes.
When the sun shines they slip into the shade
(When the sun shines down.)
And drink their lemonade.
(When the sun shines down.)
When the sun shines, when the sun shines.
Rain, I don't mind.
Shine, the weather's fine.
I can show you that when it starts to rain,
(When the sun shines down.)
Everything's the same.
(When the sun shines down.)
I can show you, I can show you.
Rain, I don't mind.
Shine, the weather's fine.
Can you hear me, that when it rains and shines,
(When the sun shines down.)
It's just a state of mind?
(When the sun shines down.)
Can you hear me, can you hear me?
If the rain comes they run and hide their heads.

To the songs

Lady Madonna

Lady Madonna, children at your feet.
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet.
Who finds the money? When you pay the rent?
Did you think that money was heaven sent?

Friday night arrives without a suitcase.
Sunday morning creep in like a nun.
Monday's child has learned to tie his bootlace.
See how they run.

Lady Madonna, baby at your breast.
Wonder how you manage to feed the rest.

See how they run.
Lady Madonna, lying on the bed,
Listen to the music playing in your head.

Tuesday afternoon is never ending.
Wednesday morning papers didn't come.
Thursday night you stockings needed mending.
See how they run.

Lady Madonna, children at your feet.
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet.

To the songs

The Inner Light (Harrison)

Without going out of my door
I can know all things of earth
With out looking out of my window
I could know the ways of heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Without going out of my door
You can know all things of earth
With out looking out of my window
You could know the ways of heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Arrive without travelling
See all without looking
Do all without doing

To the songs

Hey Jude (Lennon/McCartney)

Hey Jude, don't make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

Hey Jude, don't be afraid.
You were made to go out and get her.
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better.

And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain,
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders.
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder.

Hey Jude, don't let me down.
You have found her, now go and get her.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

So let it out and let it in, hey Jude, begin,
You're waiting for someone to perform with.
And don't you know that it's just you, hey Jude, you'll do,
The movement you need is on your shoulder.

Hey Jude, don't make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her under your skin,
Then you'll begin to make it
Better better better better better better, oh.

Da da da da da da, da da da, hey Jude...

To the songs

Revolution (Lennon/McCartney)

You say you want a revolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Alright Alright

You say you got a real solution
Well you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well you know
We're doing what we can
But when you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Alright Alright

You say you'll change the constitution
Well you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well you know
You better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don't you know know it's gonna be alright
Alright Alright

To the songs

Get Back (Lennon/McCartney)

Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it wouldn't last.
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
For some California grass.
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Jojo. Go home
Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged.
Get back Jo.

Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Loretta. Go home
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Loretta
Your mother's waiting for you
Wearing her high-heel shoes
And her low-neck sweater
Get on home Loretta
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.

To the songs

Don't Let Me Down (Lennon/McCartney)

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

Nobody ever loved me like she does,
oo, she does, yeh, she does.
And if somebody loved me like she do me,
oo, she do me, yes, she does.

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

I'm in love for the first time.
Don't you know it's gonna last.
It's a love that lasts forever,
It's a love that had no past.

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

And from the first time that she really done me,
oo, she done me, she done me good.
I guess nobody ever really done me,
oo, she done me, she done me good.

Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.

To the songs

The Ballad of John And Yoko (Lennon/McCartney)

Standing in the dock at Southampton,
Trying to get to Holland or France.
The man in the mac said, "You've got to turn back".
You know they didn't even give us a chance.
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're going to crucify me.
Finally made the plane into Paris,
Honey mooning down by the Seine.
Peter Brown called to say,
"You can make it O.K.,
You can get married in Gibraltar, near Spain".
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're going to crucify me.
Drove from Paris to the Amsterdam Hilton,
Talking in our beds for a week.
The newspapers said, "Say what you doing in bed?"
I said, "We're only trying to get us some peace".
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're going to crucify me.
Saving up your money for a rainy day,
Giving all your clothes to charity.
Last night the wife said,
"Oh boy, when you're dead
You don't take nothing with you
But your soul - think!"
Made a lightning trip to Vienna,
eating chocolate cake in a bag.
The newspapers said, "She's gone to his head,
They look just like two gurus in drag".
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're going to crucify me.
Caught an early plane back to London.
Fifty acorns tied in a sack.
The men from the press said, "We wish you success,
It's good to have the both of you back".
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're going to crucify me.
The way things are going
They're going to crucify me.

To the songs

Old Brown Shoe (Harrison)

I want a love that's right but right is only half of what's wrong.
I want a short haired girl who sometimes wears it twice as long.
Now I'm stepping out this old brown shoe, baby, I'm in love with you.
I'm so glad you came here, it won't be the same now, I'm telling you.

You know you pick me up from where some try to drag me down
And when I see your smile replace every thoughtless frown.
Got me escaping from this zoo, baby, I'm in love with you.
I'm so glad you came here, it won't be the same now when I'm with you.

If I grow up I'll be a singer wearing rings on every finger.
Not worrying what they or you say I'll live and love and maybe someday
Who knows, baby, you may comfort me.
I may appear to be imperfect, my love is something you can't reject.
I'm changing faster than the weather if you and me should get together
Who knows, baby, you may comfort me.

That love of your, to miss that love is something I'd hate.
I'll make an early start, I'm making sure that I'm not late.
For you sweet top lip I'm in the queue, baby, I'm in love with you.
I'm so glad you came here, it won't be the same now when I'm with you.
I'm so glad you came here, it won't be the same now when I'm with you.

To the songs

Across The Universe (Lennon/McCartney)

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind,
Possessing and caressing me.
Jai guru de va om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world.

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,
That call me on and on across the universe,
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe
Jai guru de va om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world.

Sounds of laughter shades of earth are ringing
Through my open views inviting and inciting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a
Million suns, it calls me on and on
Across the universe
Jai guru de va om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world.

To the songs

Let it Be (Lennon/McCartney)

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be. Yeah
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
