Album Notes

first released March 7, 1988

The Beatles' discography spans a period in which the Tin Pan Alley / Bobbysoxer mentality of the previous generation gave way to modern business practices, where the artist has some say in what gets done with their catalog. (You can thank the Fabs themselves for most of that change, but that's neither here nor there.) As a result, the Beatles' releases were extremely haphazard; EPs, LPs, singles, special promo releases, mono and stereo mixes of the same songs, redubbed tunes, different packaging in every country, etc. etc. Figuring it all out was a task suited to only the most die-hard collector.

When it became obvious that vinyl records were soon to go the way of the wax cylinder and the 78, Capitol decided that it would be best to finally collect all the non-album tracks in one place. Hence, Past Masters One and Two. While fans griped about the packaging, which was literally as plain as black and white, the CDs are about all one could expect from a post-Apple, pre-Apple Beatle juggernaut; it was enough for most of us to finally have these songs without having to buy ten or twelve albums. And in digital quality, yet!

So, PM 1 and 2 take their place as albums 14 and 15 in the modern age. But while it might be tempting to write them off as another collection of odds and sods, the fact is, the Beatles straddled those above-mentioned eras so completely that they have several classic singles never contained on an officially released album. These two CDs contain oddities like "Sie Liebt Dich", but they also give you "Hey Jude", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "She Loves You" -- not only essential parts of the Beatle legacy, but parts of the summit. For the record, and as they say on TV commercials for similar products, here's what you get!

Song Notes

Love Me Do (single) Their first single, and the version with Ringo on drums. No slight on Ringo, but the Please Please Me version is much better: it's livelier. The difference can probably just be boiled down to two different takes; knowing how mercurial the Fabs were in the studio, this seems to be an off take, simply missing the magic.

From Me To You The third UK single. A bit of a disappointment after "Please Please Me", I'd imagine, but still a fine song. You can hear the boys quickly working towards the culmination of their pop education in "She Loves You". Typically quirky Beatle arrangement has a happy pledge of faith end on a minor note (quite a jarring effect at that time).

Thank You Girl Not one of the Beatles' better efforts, this is obviously just a knockoff for the b-side of "From Me To You". John does give it his all, however. Note the re-appearance of the harmonica.

She Loves You The song that cemented worldwide Beatlemania once and for all. The apex of Beatle songwriting at that time (and maybe for all time), this song is bursting with innovation: Ringo's tribal drums, the minor-key chorus, the third-person subject (a deliberate attempt by John and Paul to shake things up). Not to mention that famous harmonized 6th at the end, kept in at the Beatles' insistance after George Martin thought it "too jazzy". A textbook example in pop songwriting. Or, how to break the rules and follow them at the same time.

I'll Get You Another relatively lame b-side, although slightly better than its reputation. More harmonica and a great bridge from John.

I Want To Hold Your Hand A high point of both Paul and John's songwriting careers. John refused to bash this song, even in his post-Beatle years; he thought the melody and sentiment fit perfectly. They do. Written as a collaborative effort by the two: Paul specifically began the song with "Oh yeah, I'll... tell you something..." and John jumped right in with that jarring E5 chord. Some debate exists as to whether or not the Fabs are saying "I get high" instead of "I can't hide"; Bob Dylan himself thought it was the former. Indeed, on his first meeting with the band, he congratulated them for singing that!

This Boy The band's most direct attempt at 50's song structure (at least until Oh! Darling). Beautiful harmonies by the front three. George said that this was actually John's most blatant attempt to write (and sing) a Smokey Robinson and the Miracles song.

Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand The German-langauge version of "I Want To Hold Your Hand", done specifically for the German audience, who had given the Fabs their first real break in Hamburg.

Sie Liebt Dich The German-language "She Loves You".

Long Tall Sally Paul's first homage to Little Richard, and a damn fine one, although there hasn't been a person of woman born who can match a LR original.

I Call Your Name One of John's trilogy of "cowbell" songs, this is better than "When I Get Home" (a lot better) but not quite up to the standards of "You Can't Do That". Lyrically the best of the lot, however.

Slow Down One of two Larry Williams covers, this demonstrated their vast knowledge of R&B (not many white American kids were into Larry, much less Liverpudlians). More static than the loose-flowing original, but that actually works to its favor in some respects. John mimicks Larry's "brrrrr!" in as charming a way as Paul does Little Richard's "whooo!"

Matchbox One of the Carl Perkins covers, sung by Ringo in his typical loveable downtrodden way. Captures the Sun sound perfectly. And Carl was present at these sessions, so the boys were nervous as hell.

I Feel Fine Another golden oldie! An early change in sound that would lead directly to the doorway of "Ticket To Ride". Much bluesier than the preceeding singles, disproving the Beatles-as-mere-pop-group myth, although there were crafty pop touches in abundance. For example, the cunning way the main riff noses its way into the solo and the outro.

She's A Woman A Paul standard that unfortunately contains his worst rhyme ever: the "present/peasent" one. Nevertheless, another fine example of how the band was getting rawer as they were becoming more popular. It's tight, almost a little TOO tight, but a great song nonetheless.

Bad Boy Another Larry Williams cover, with a great, screaming vocal by John. Something tells me this was how John saw his teenage years. A laughing rebuke to those who would say, "Now, Junior, behave yourself!"

Yes It Is Another 50's experiment, and one with similarly beautiful harmonies. This is much more polished than "This Boy", however, its got an almost unsettling aspect about it due to the song's inscrutable lyrics. What exactly happened here?

I'm Down The Fabs' most direct take on a straight, original rock and roll number (at least until "Birthday"). Featuring a blistering (if primitive) organ solo by John.

Love Me Do (Lennon/McCartney)

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Someone to love,
Somebody new.
Someone to love,
Someone like you.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.
Yeah, love me do.
Whoa, oh, love me do.

To the songs

From Me To You (Lennon/McCartney)

If there's anything that you want,
If there's anything I can do,
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.
I've got everything that you want,
Like a heart that is oh, so true.
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.
I got arms that long to hold you
And keep you by my side.
I got lips that long to kiss you
And keep you satisfied, oooh.
If there's anything that you want,
If there's anything I can do,
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.
From me, to you.
To you, to you, to you.

To the songs

Thank You Girl (Lennon/McCartney)

Oh, oh,
You've been good to me,
You made me glad
When I was blue,
And eternally I'll always be
In love with you,
And all I gotta do
Is thank you girl, thank you girl.

I could tell the world
A thing or two about our love,
I know little girl,
Only a fool would doubt our love,
And all I gotta do
Is thank you girl, thank you girl.

Thank you girl for loving me
The way that you do, (way that you do),
That's the kind of love
That is too good to be true,
And all I gotta do
Is thank you girl, thank you girl.

Oh, oh,
You've been good to me,
You made me glad
When I was blue,
And eternally I'll always be
In love with you,
And all I gotta do
Is thank you girl, thank you girl.
Oh, oh.

To the songs

She Loves You (Lennon/McCartney)

She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

You think you lost your love,
When I saw her yesterday.
It's you she's thinking of
And she told me what to say.
She says she loves you
And you know that can't be bad.
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad. Ooh!

She said you were to know
That she almost lost her mind.
And now she says she knows
You're not the hurting kind.
She says she loves you
And you know that can't be bad.
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad. Ooh!

She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
And with a love like that
You know you should be glad.

And now it's up to you,
I think it's only fair,
If I should hurt you, too,
Apologize to her
Because she loves you
And you know that can't be bad.
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad. Ooh!

She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
And with a love like that
You know you should be glad.

To the songs

I'll Get You (Lennon/McCartney)

Oh yeh, oh yeh.
Imagine, I'm in love with you,
It's easy 'cos I know,
I've imagined, I'm in love with you,
Many, many, many times before.

It's not like me to pretend,
But I'll get you in the end,
Yes I will, I'll get you in the end, oh yeh, oh yeh.

I think about you night and day,
I need you 'cos it's true.
When I think about you, I can say,
I'm never, never, never, never blue.

So I'm telling you, my friend,
That I'll get you, I'll get you in the end,
Yes I will, I'll get you in the end, oh yeh, oh yeh.

Well, there's gonna be a time,
Well I'm gonna change your mind.
So you might as well resign yourself to me, oh yeh.

Imagine, I'm in love with you,
It's easy 'cos I know,
I've imagined, I'm in love with you,
Many, many, many times before.

It's not like me to pretend,
But I'll get you, I'll get you in the end,
Yes I will, I'll get you in the end,
Oh yeh, oh yeh.

To the songs

I Want To Hold Your Hand (Lennon/McCartney)

Oh yeah, I'll tell you something,
I think you'll understand.
When I'll say that something
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand.

Oh please, say to me
You'll let me be your man
And please, say to me
You'll let me hold your hand.
Now let me hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand.

And when I touch you I feel happy inside.
It's such a feeling that my love
I can't hide, I can't hide, I can't hide.

Yeah, you've got that something,
I think you'll understand.
When I'll say that something
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand.

And when I touch you I feel happy inside.
It's such a feeling that my love
I can't hide, I can't hide, I can't hide.

Yeh, you've got that something,
I think you'll understand.
When I'll feel that something
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand.

To the songs

This Boy (Lennon/McCartney)

That boy took my love away,
He'll regret it someday,
But this boy wants you back again.

That boy isn't good for you,
Tho' he may want you too,
This boy wants you back again.

Oh, and this boy would be happy,
Just to love you, buy oh my-yi-yi,
That boy won't be happy,
Till he's seen you cry-hi-hi.

This boy wouldn't mind the pain,
Would always feel the same,
If this boy gets you back again.
This boy. This boy.

To the songs

Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand (Lennon/McCartney)

Oh, komm doch,
Komm zu mir,
Du nimmst mir den Verstand.
Oh, komm doch,
Komm zu mir,
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.

Oh, du bist so schön,
Schön wie ein Diamant,
Ich will mit dir gehen,
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.
Komm gib mir deine Hand.

In deinen Armen bin ich glücklich und froh;
Das war noch nie bei einer andern
Einmal so.
Einmal so.
Einmal so.

Oh, komm doch, . . .

In deinen Armen bin ich glücklich und froh; . . .

Oh, du bist so schön, . . .

To the songs

Sie Liebt Dich (Lennon/McCartney)

Sie liebt dich
Sie liebt dich
Sie liebt dich

Du glaubst sie liebt nur mich?
Gestern hab' ich sie gesehen.
Sie denkt ja nur an dich,
Und du solltest zu ihr gehen.

Oh, ja sie liebt dich.
Schöner kann es gar nicht sein.
Ja, sie liebt dich,
Und da solltest du dich freu'n.

Du hast ihr weh getan,
Sie wusste nicht warum.
Du warst nicht schuld daran,
Und drehtest dich nicht um.

Oh, ja sie liebt dich. . . .

To the songs

Long Tall Sally (Johnson/Penniman/Blackwell)

Gonna tell Aunt Mary 'bout Uncle John,
He says he has the blues but he has a lotta fun.
Oh baby,
Ye-e-e-eh baby,
Woo-o-o-oh baby,
Havin' me some fun tonight.

Well, long tall Sally has a lot on the ball
And nobody cares if she's long and tall.
Oh baby,
Ye-e-e-eh baby,
Woo-o-o-oh baby,
Havin' me some fun tonight.

Well, I saw Uncle John with long tall Sally.
He saw Aunt mary cummin' and he ducked back in the alley.
Oh baby,
Ye-e-e-eh baby,
Woo-o-o-oh baby,
Havin' me some fun tonight.

We're gonna have some fun tonight,
Gonna have some fun tonight.
We're gonna have some fun tonight,
Everything will be alright.
We're gonna have some fun,
Gonna have some fun tonight.

We're gonna have some fun tonight,
Gonna have some fun tonight.
We're gonna have some fun tonight,
Everything will be alright.
We're gonna have some fun,
Gonna have some fun tonight.

To the songs

I Call Your Name (Lennon/McCartney)

I call your name but you're not there, was I to blame for being unfair,
Oh I can't sleep at night, since you've been gone. I never
Weep at night I can't go on.
Well don't you know I can't take it. I don't know who can,
I'm not goin' to mayayake it I'm not that kind of man.
Oh I can't sleep at night, but just the same I never weep at
Night I call your name, I call your name.

To the songs

Slow Down (Williams)

Well, come on pretty baby, won't you walk with me?
Come on, pretty baby, won't you talk with me?
Come on pretty baby, give me one more chance.
Try to save our romance!

Slow down, baby, now you're movin' way too fast.
You gotta gimme little lovin', gimme little lovin',
Ow! if you want our love to last.

Well, I used to walk you home, baby, after school,
Carry your books home, too.
But now you got a boyfriend down the street,
Baby what you're tryin' to do?

You better slow down!
Baby, now you're movin' way too fast.
You gotta gimme little lovin', gimme little lovin',
Bbbbb! if you want our love to last.

Well you know that I love you, tell the world I do.
Come on, pretty baby, why can't you be true?
I need your baby, oh so bad,
The best little woman I ever had

Slow down, baby, now you're movin' way too fast.
You gotta gimme little lovin', gimme little lovin',
Ow! if you want our love to last.

To the songs

Matchbox (Perkins)

I said I'm sittin' here watchin'
Matchbox hole in my clothes.
I said I'm sittin' here watchin'
Matchbox hole in my clothes.
I ain't got no matches but I sure
got a long way to go.

I'm an ol' poor boy, and I'm a
long way from home.
I'm an ol' poor boy, and I'm a
long way from home.
I'll never be happy cause everything I've
ever did was wrong.

Well, If you don't want my peaches honey,
please don't shake my tree.
Well, If you don't want my peaches honey,
please don't shake my tree.
I got news for you baby, leave me here in
misery.

Well, let me be your little dog, till your
big dog comes.
Well, let me be your little dog, till your
big dog comes.
And when your big dog gets here, watch how
your puppy dog runs.

I said I'm sittin' here watchin'
Matchbox hole in my clothes.
I said I'm sittin' here watchin'
Matchbox hole in my clothes.
I ain't got no matches but I sure
got a long way to go.

To the songs

I Feel Fine (Lennon/McCartney)

Baby's good to me, you know,
She's happy as can be, you know,
She said so.
I'm in love with her and I feel fine.
Baby says she's mine, you know,
She tells me all the time, you know,
She said so.
I'm in love with her and I feel fine.
I'm so glad that she's my little girl.
She's so glad, she's telling all the world
That her baby buys her things, you know.
He buys her diamond rings, you know,
She said so.
She's in love with me and I feel fine, mmm.
Baby says she's mine, you know,
She tells me all the time, you know,
She said so.
I'm in love with her and I feel fine.
I'm so glad that she's my little girl.
She's so glad, she's telling all the world
That her baby buys her things, you know.
He buys her diamond rings, you know,
She said so.
She's in love with me and I feel fine, mmm, mmm.

To the songs

She's A Woman (Lennon/McCartney)

My love don't give me presents.
I know that she's no peasant,
Only ever has to give me love forever and forever,
My love don't give me presents,
Turn me on when I get lonely,
People tell me that she's only
Foolin', I know she isn't.

She don't give the boys the eye,
She hates to see me cry,
She is happy just to hear me say
That I will never leave her.
She don't give the boys the eye,
She will never make me jealous,
Gives me all her time as well as lovin',
Don't ask me why.

She's a woman who understands.
She's a woman who loves her man.

She's a woman, she's a woman.

To the songs

Bad Boy (Williams)

A bad little kid moved into my neighborhood
He won't do nothing right just sitting down and looks so good
He don't want to go to school and learn to read and write
Just sits around the house and plays the rock and roll music all night
Well, he put some tacks on teachers chair
Puts some gum in little girl's hair
Hey, junior, behave yourself

Buys every rock and roll book on the magazine stand
Every dime that he get is lost to the jukebox man
Well he worries his teacher till at night she's ready to poop
From rocking and a-rolling spinning in a hula hoop
Well this rock and roll has got to stop
Junior's head is hard as rock
Now, junior, behave yourself

Going tell your mama you better do what she said
Get to the barber shop and get that hair cut off your head
Threw the canary and you fed it to the neighbors cat
You gave the cocker spaniel a bath in mother's laundramat
Well, mama's head has got to stop
Junior's head is hard as rock
Now, junior, behave yourself

To the songs

Yes It Is (Lennon/McCartney)

If you wear red tonight,
Remember what I said tonight.
For red is the colour that my baby wore,
And what is more, it's true,
Yes it is.
Scarlet were the clothes she wore,
Everybody knows I've sure.
I would remember all the things we planned,
Understand, it's true,
Yes it is, it's true.
Yes it is.
I could be happy with you by my side
If I could forget her, but it's my pride.
Yes it is, yes it is.
Oh, yes it is, yeah.
"Please don't wear red tonight."
This is what I said tonight.
For red is the colour that will make me blue,
In spite of you, it's true,
Yes it is, it's true.
Yes it is.
I could be happy with you by my side
If I could forget her, but it's my pride.
Yes it is, yes it is.
Oh, yes it is, yeah.
"Please don't wear red tonight."
This is what I said tonight.
For red is the colour that will make me blue,
In spite of you, it's true,
Yes it is, it's true.
Yes it is, it's true.

To the songs

I'm Down (Lennon/McCartney)

You telling lies thinking I can't see
You don't cry 'cos you're laughing at me
I'm down (I'm really down)
I'm down (Down on the ground)
I'm down (I'm really down)
How can you laugh when you know I'm down
(How can you laugh) When you know I'm down.

Man buys ring woman throws it away
Same damn thing happens everyday
I'm down (I'm really down)
I'm down (Down on the ground)
I'm down (I'm really down)
How can you laugh when you know I'm down
(How can you laugh) When you know I'm down.

We're all alone and there's nobody else
You still moan: "Keep your hands to yourself!"
I'm down (I'm really down)
I'm down (Down on the ground)
I'm down (I'm really down)
How can you laugh when you know I'm down
(How can you laugh) When you know I'm down.

Don't you know that I'm down (I'm really down)
Don't you know that I'm down (I'm really down)
Down on the ground (I'm really down)
Don't you know that I'm down (I'm really down)
Down, down, down.
