Album Notes

This was the last unique Canadian Beatles LP...and unique it was. The packaging and track selection would indicate to me at least, that these were hectic times at Capitol Records of Canada. After having issued a repackaged UK album (Beatlemania! With the Beatles) and an entirely new one (Twist and Shout) made from other UK releases, Capitol was now seeing activity from it's cousin to the south. Capitol Records in the U.S. released Meet the Beatles in January and the Beatles Second Album on April 10. The Long Tall Sally album is a snapshot of this transformation from UK to US formats.

Capitol of Canada must of been short on time when it came to designing a cover since they went ahead with a modified version of the US Second Album artwork. The Long Tall Sally title and selected song list neatly replaced it's US counterpart. Since this album didn't include She Loves You, this area of the cover was replaced with the Capitol 6000 series logo.

The back cover features the same US artwork but includes numerous Canadian markings and photos of both previous Canadian LP's. Across the top of the back cover it reads "The Beatles with a new recording of 'Roll Over Beethoven' - and a programme of your favourites and their favourites". This must have been confusing for owners of Beatlemania! With the Beatles as they already owned Roll Over Beethoven and three other tracks on this album. This "new recording" was more than likely the US "Duophonic" version.

In addition to the four duplicate tracks, Capitol of Canada included another eight, one more than the 11 found on the Second Album. Both LP's included a couple of B-sides and two new tracks (Long Tall Sally and I Call Your Name) which wouldn't be issued in the UK until June 19. To round out Long Tall Sally Capitol of Canada added I Want to Hold Your Hand and This Boy (from the UK single and US Meet the Beatles) and the two leftover tracks from Please Please Me LP: I Saw Her Standing There (US Meet the Beatles) and Misery. The latter track was not to appear on an album in the US until Rarities was released in 1980. In the US the Second Album contained three tracks not found on Long Tall Sally: Money (Beatlemania! With the Beatles), She Loves You (Twist and Shout LP) and Thank You Girl. This last track didn't appear on any of the three unique Canadian LP's but was issued as B-side twice! In 1963 with From Me to You and on Do You Want to Know a Secret in 1964.
