Help!
Album Notes
first released August 6, 1965
Only the Beatles could make lightning strike twice -- although the film and album weren't quite as well recieved as A Hard Day's Night, there were definite signs that the Great Pop Leap Forward the Fabs had instituted was back on track and running right on schedule. After this album, many things would change: no more reliance on covers (3 of the first four albums were half-full of them), no more attempts at shoehorning the boys into teenybop constructs, no more Beatlemania, effectively. Oh, the world still loved them (although the love was shaky at this point), but not with the hair-pulling frenzy of the early days.
Help is one last great stab at Beatlemania; although the formula wouldn't change completely until Revolver, the reliance on originals and the expansion of the Beatles' sound had its first embryonic stages here. Yesterday and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away were completely unlike anything that the Fabs - or anyone else, really - had tried. Dylan was obviously the template for the latter, but John built on the style and revealed a despondent, closely guarded self. Both songs were not just meant to capitalize on the percieved emotions of the Audience; they were emotion, perfectly captured with three minutes of wax and a handful of chords.
What all this meant is that the Beatles, under a crippling promotional schedule, failing romances, and the necessity of keeping a happy facade, had still managed to rewrite the rules of what rock and roll (and popular music) could be. They were all beginning to reveal themselves; they were beginning to dare to show us what they were, not what we wanted them to be. The Beatles' middle period is a transitional one, but no less fascinating for it. By the end of 1965, the Beatles world and our cheap knockoff would both be quite changed indeed.
Song Notes
Help!
A very real, heartbroken plea from an unhappy John, done as an upbeat folk-rock number. John was later heard to say that this and "Strawberry Fields Forever" were the only emotionally true songs he made as a Beatle, because they really revealed how he felt at the time. Fantastic harmonies and counterpoint melody. Pure anguished energy, from the cold opening to the odd ending chord.
The Night Before
One of Paul's better efforts of the period, probably directed at Jane Asher. Sort of Paul's less-ranting version of "Help!", it creates a lot of the same turmoil. Great double-tracked solo and smooth, funky electric piano work from John!
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
To this day, it stands as the Beatles' biggest nod to Dylan, although the lyrics are nothing but John. Legend says that this was written about a fling behind John and Brian Epstein, which John would have obviously had to "hide away". I'm not a homophobe, but I'm also not buying. Lovely flute solo that adds a whole extra level of poignancy.
I Need You
George's songwriting is improving here, but he's still a few albums back, stylistically (no mean feat; we're talking about catching up to Lennon-McCartney here). Interesting to note how the song has a more droning quality than the other originals, perhaps a preface to the Eastern tonality George would come to adopt. Written by George for Patti Boyd and featuring his new favorite toy: a wah-wah.
Another Girl
A forgotten near-classic from Paul that shows him at his bluesiest, but also, characteristically, trickier than you'd think (dig the bridge). George lays down ultra-tasty fretwork all over this thing. It really grows on you! Written about Jane Asher; who's the other girl?
You're Gonna Lose That Girl
A wonderful number from John that sounds like a throwaback to the "With The Beatles" days, except of higher quality than most of that material. Featuring one of George's most bizarre but satisfying solos.
Ticket To Ride
One of the most enduring songs in the Beatles' canon, the apex of the folkish, stutter-step style of their middle period. Note the double-time in the bridge, a real stylistic gamble that worked.
Act Naturally
The sad, lonely, but resolute Emmett Kelly-like image that Ringo presented was tailor-made for this Buck Owens song. The first overtly country song in the Beatle catalog. George hauls out his formidable rockabilly chops.
It's Only Love
Another "throwaway", made-to-order song, with Hallmark lyrics. And John, obviously, was embarrassed by it almost immediately. So why is it so incredibly, stupidly beautiful? And why does John give it so much vocally? Because he was an artist.
You Like Me Too Much
George's other "Help!" offering isn't up to "I Need You". It is interesting, however, even if the piano sounds a little clunky. (Steinways do not work for boogie-woogie, I don't care who you are).
Tell Me What You See
Another reason side 2 of "Help!" sags so much. Note the cool way the electric piano breakdown sets off the rest of the song, though.
I've Just Seen A Face
Original title: Auntie Gin's Theme
A real standout for Paul, this hootenanny of a track sounds like nothing he'd done before or since. His aunt loved it, hence the title. Moves like a freight train, and boasts not only a rich hook but surprisngly tight lyrics in such a rigid structure.
Yesterday
Original Title: Scrambled Eggs
The most-covered Beatles song ever. The most covered song ever, period, unless you count "Happy Birthday". The most famous Beatle compositional story ever; Paul fell out of bed with the melody already in his head, and hurried to find some stopgap lyrics before he forgot it... hence, "Scrambled Eggs". Ultra-tasteful string arrangement suggested by George Martin. Paul, fearful that it would turn into "Mantovani rubbish", worked with Martin on the arrangement, keeping it elegant and simple. Certainly the best crafted song in the Beatles' early repetoire. As timeless and unobtrusive as the sunset.
Dizzy Miss Lizzie
Almost an afterthought, coming as it does after "Yesterday", this is one of two Larry Williams covers specifically recorded to appeal to America. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't necessary, either; "Yesterday" struck gold just three months after this song came out in the US. The Beatles had artistic carte blanche, and they were about to use it.
Help! (Lennon/McCartney)
Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, help.
When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors.
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me.
And now my life has changed in oh so many ways,
My independence seems to vanish in the haze.
But every now and then I feel so insecure,
I know that I just need you like I've never done before.
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me.
When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in any way.
But now these daya are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors.
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, oh.
The Night Before (Lennon/McCartney)
We said our goodbyes, ah, the night before.
Love was in your eyes, ah, the night before.
Now today I find you have changed your mind.
Treat me like you did the night before.
Were you telling lies, ah, the night before?
Was I so unwise, ah, the night before?
When I held you near you were so sincere.
Treat me like you did the night before.
Last night is a night I will remember you by.
When I think of things we did it makes me wanna cry.
We said our goodbye, ah, the night before.
Love was in your eyes, ah, the night before.
Now today I find you have changed your mind.
Treat me like you did the night before.
When I held you near you were so sincere.
Treat me like you did the night before.
Last night is a night I will remember you by.
When I think of things we did it makes me wanna cry.
Were you telling lies, ah, the night before?
Was I so unwise, ah, the night before?
When I held you near you were so sincere.
Treat me like you did the night before,
like the night before.
You've Got to Hide Your Love Away (Lennon/McCartney)
Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feelin' two-foot small
Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say
Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away
How could I even try
I can never win
Hearing them, seeing them
In the state I'm in
How could she say to me
Love will find a way
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say
Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away
I Need You (Harrison)
You don't realize how much I need you, love you all the time
And never leave you.
Please come on back to me. I'm lonely as can be. I need you.
Said you had a thing or two to tell me. How was I to know
You would upset me?
I didn't realize as I looked in your eyes
You told me, oh yes, you told me, you don't want my lovin' anymore.
That's when it hurt me and feeling like this I just can't go on anymore.
Please remember how I feel about you, I could never really live without you,
So, come on back and see just what you mean to me. I need you.
Another Girl (Lennon/McCartney)
For I hove found another girl, another girl.
You're making me say that I've got nobody but you,
But as from today, well, I've got somebody that's new.
I ain't no fool and I don't take what I don't want,
For I have got another girl, another girl.
She's sweeter than all the girls and I met quite a few.
Nobody in all the world can do what she can do.
And so I'm telling you, "This time you'd better stop."
For I have got another girl. Another girl.
Who will love me till the end.
Through thick and thin
She will always be my friend.
I don't want to say that I've been unhappy with you,
But, as from today, well, I've seen somebody that's new.
I ain't no fool and I don't take what I don't want,
For I have got another girl. Another girl.
Who will love me till the end.
Through thick and thin
She will always be my friend.
I don't want to say that I've been unhappy with you,
But, as from today, well, I've seen somebody that's new.
I ain't no fool and I don't take what I don't want,
For I have got another girl. Another girl.
Another girl.
You're Going to Lose That Girl (Lennon/McCartney)
You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl.
If you don't take her out tonight,
She's going to change her mind,
And I will take her out tonight,
And I will treat her kind.
You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl.
If you don't treat her right, my friend,
You're going to find her gone,
'cause I will treat her right, and then
You'll be the lonely one.
You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl.
I'll make a point
Of taking her away from you, yeah,
The way you treat her what else can I do?
You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl.
I'll make a point
Of taking her away from you, yeah,
The way you treat her what else can I do?
If you don't take her out tonight,
She's going to change her mind,
And I will take her out tonight,
And I will treat her kind.
You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl
Ticket to Ride (Lennon/McCartney)
I think I'm gonna be sad,
I think it's today, yeah.
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away.
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.
She said that living with me
Is bringing her down yeah.
For she would never be free
When I was around.
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.
I don't know why she's ridin' so high,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.
Before she gets to saying goodbye,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.
I think I'm gonna be sad,
I think it's today yeah.
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away, yeah.
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.
I don't know why she's ridin' so high,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.
Before she gets to saying goodbye,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.
She said that living with me,
Is bringing her down, yeah.
For she would never be free
When I was around.
Ah, she's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.
My baby don't care, my baby don't care.
My baby don't care, my baby don't care.
My baby don't care, my baby don't care.
Act Naturally (Morrison/Russell)
They're gonna put me in the movies
They're gonna make a big star out of me
We'll make a film about a man that's sad and lonely
And all I gotta so is act naturally
Well, I'll bet you I'm gonna be a big star
Might win an Oscar you can never tell
The movies gonna make me a big star
'Cause I can plat the part so well
Well I hope you come and see me in the movies
Then I know that you will plainly see
The biggest fool that ever hit the big time
And all I gotta do is act naturally
We'll make the scene about a man that's sad and lonely
And beggin down upon his bended knee
I'll play the part but I won't need rehearsal
All I gotta do is act naturally
Well, I'll bet you I'm gonna be a big star
Might win an Oscar you can never tell
The movies gonna make me a big star
'Cause I can plat the part so well
Well I hope you come and see me in the movies
Then I know that you will plainly see
The biggest fool that ever hit the big time
And all I gotta do is act naturally
It's Only Love (Lennon/McCartney)
I get high when I see you go by
My oh my.
When you sigh, my, my inside just flies,
Butterflies
Why am I so shy when I'm beside you?
It's only love and that is all,
Why should I feel the way I do?
It's only love, and that is all,
But it's so hard loving you.
Is it right that you and I should fight
Ev'ry night?
Just the sight of you makes nighttime bright,
Very bright.
Haven't I the right to make it up girl?
It's only love and that is all,
Why should I feel the way I do?
It's only love, and that is all
But it's so hard loving you
Yes it's so hard loving you -- loving you.
You Like Me Too Much (Harrison)
Though you've gone away this morning,
You'll be back again tonight,
Telling me there'll be no next time
If I don't just don't treat you right,
You'll never leave me and you know it's true,
'cause you like me too much and I like you.
You've tried before to leave me,
But you haven't got the nerve
To walk out and make me lonely
Which is all that I deserve,
You'll never leave me and you know it's true,
'cause you like me too much and I like you.
I really do, and it's nice when you believe me,
If you leave me
I will follow I will follow you
And bring you back where you belong
'cause I could't really stand it,
I admit that I was wrong,
I wouldn't let you leave me 'cause it's true,
'cause you like me too much and I like you.
If you leave me
I will follow I will follow you
and bring you back where you belong
'cause I could't really stand it,
I admit that I was wrong,
I wouldn't let you leave me 'cause it's true,
'cause you like me too much and I like you,
'cause you like me too much and I like you.
Tell Me What You See (Lennon/McCartney)
If you let me take your heart I will prove to you,
We will never be apart if I'm part of you.
Open up your eyes now, tell me what you see.
It is no suprise now, what you see is me.
Big and black the clouds may be, time will pass away.
If you put your trust in me I'll make bright your day.
Look into these eyes now, tell me what you see.
Don't you realise now, what you see is me.
Tell me what you see.
Listen to me one more time, how can I get through?
Can't you try to see that I'm trying to get to you?
Open up your eyes now, tell me what you see.
It is no suprise now, what you see is me.
Tell me what you see.
Listen to me one more time, how can I get through?
Can't you try to see that I'm trying to get to you?
Open up your eyes now, tell me what you see.
It is no suprise now, what you see is me.
I've Just Seen a Face (Lennon/McCartney)
I've just seen a face,
I can't forget the time or place
Where we just meet.
She's just the girl for me
And want all the world to see
We've met, mmm-mmm-mmm-m'mmm-mmm.
Had it been another day
I might have looked the other way
And I'd have never been aware.
But as it is I'll dream of her
Tonight, di-di-di-di'n'di.
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
I have never known
The like of this, I've been alone
And I have missed things
And kept out of sight
But other girls were never quite
Like this, da-da-n'da-da'n'da.
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
I've just seen a face,
I can't forget the time or place
Where we just meet.
She's just the girl for me
And want all the world to see
We've met, mmm-mmm-mmm-da-da-da.
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
Oh, falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
Yesterday (Lennon/McCartney)
Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly, I'm not half to man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
Why she had to go I don't know she woldn't say.
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Mm mm mm mm mm.
Dizzy Miss Lizzie (Williams)
You make me dizzy, Miss Lizzie,
The way you rock'n'roll.
You make me dizzy, Miss Lizzie,
When we do the stroll.
Come on, Miss Lizzie,
love me fore I grow too old.
Come on, give me fever,
Put your little hand in mine.
You make me dizzy, Miss Lizzie,
Girl, you look so fine.
You're just a-rockin' and a-rollin',
I sure do wish you were mine.
You make me dizzy, Miss Lizzie,
When you call my name.
O-o-o-o-oh baby,
Say you're driving me insane.
Come on, come on, come on, baby,
I want to be your lover man.
Run and tell your mama
I want you to be my bride.
Run and tell your brother,
Baby, don't run and hide.
You make me dizzy, Miss Lizzie,
And I want to marry you.
Come on, give me fever,
Put your little hand in mine.
You make me dizzy, Miss Lizzie,
Girl, you look so fine.
You're just a-rockin' and.a-rollin',
I sure do wish you were mine.
