From the time I was a little girl I have had a great love of animals. I was just 2 1/2 years old when I picked out my first beloved pet, a kitten I named "Fluffy Ding Ding". I had my beloved Fluffy for almost 17 wonderful years. Throughout those years I brought home as many "pets" as I could, with or without my parents permission. Which included animals like: kittens, puppies, hamsters, mice, frogs, tadpoles, fish, birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, etc.
A few years (too many), a husband and a couple of kids later I am still bringing home the "pets", and yes that is still "with or without permission"!
Quite a few years ago I started breeding some "small animals" to pay for my pets. I was fortunate to be able to find many fascinating species to breed and enjoy. I have since retired from breeding small animals, though I still have my Fennec Foxes as pets.
I have worked for one of the area's best equestrian stables. I am a certified a dog groomer, I am also a trained veterinary nurse and I have a degree in Animal Sciences. I was working in Victoria, B.C.'s premier bird store (FFlocks Bird Supply) while I was going back to school to get my Bachelors degree in Biology. I never did finish the course and my job at FFlocks didn't last long, either. I married my boss at FFlocks, poor guy if he only knew what he was getting into!
When I married my Rob, my husband, he was breeding parrots (he was also a domestic and foreign bird judge) and I learned first hand how to hand-feed and care for many species of birds, both his own birds as well as through FFlocks.
When Rob bought me my first computer I was amazed. You see, I love to research all types of animals, primarily the animals that I have and the ones that I am interested in. Thanks to the Internet I have been able to find out a lot more information on the animals than I could have any other way. I could spend hours a day (Rob's note: she does!) looking at all the great information on the animals. Between the multitude of sites dedicated to supplying information on animals and all of the wonderful people who have been so willing to share information, I have been able to learn more about the animals that I am researching on the internet than I had been able to find in books in many many years.
I like to help people that are looking for information on their animals, or the animals that they are looking for, as best as I can. I have found over the years that many people/breeders are not always willing to help or share information on care, diet, breeding, etc, so I swore I wouldn't be like that. This is one thing that I love about my husband and his store, he feels that educating his customers is more important than a quick sale (those kind of sales usually back-fire). I feel that the more that you help people look after their "pets", the more love and enjoyment they bring them and the healthier they are. If you help someone who is trying to breed an animal then you can help promote good breeding practices as well as preventing indirect harm to the species. This can easily happen when someone, that without the knowledge or guidance, is producing animals that are of poor quality due to inbreeding/bad genetics/poor stock or many other reasons. When these animals are introduced onto the market the poor health, bad character traits, etc end up hurting the reputation of the breed in general. Some good examples of this are: Rottweilers, Pit Bull Terriers, and so on. Due to the popularity and the mass breeding of some of these animals, the bad ones have hurt the reputation of the well-bred animals.
