Some people claim a jig holds a tool and a fixture holds the work piece. The blade is the work piece in this case so actually any honing guide is a honing fixture. Some people disagree.
My honing guide is for the scary sharp method as described on Brent Beach's site . I think that my guide has a few advantages over Beach's. First, I don't have to worry about whether or not the front faces of the two pieces of wood are co-planer or not. Second, the same projection produces the same angle regardless of blade thickness. Third, the screws heads are on the other side for easy access when...
Using my set up square that automatically squares the blade and sets the blade projection, it only takes about 30 seconds to have the blade properly set in the guide. The base of the set-up square is like a bench hook. The whole thing is made out of mdf and the ruler is in a shallow dado below the surface. It would be nice to use double sided tape or even some little rare-earth magnets to hold the ruler in place.
The thin piece in the honing guide does flex a bit but over all it works well. I have thought of some solutions to stiffen the piece but haven't tried any yet.
