Peter, You are reading the DC voltage after the rectifier, but as it is probally
*raw* dc i.e. unfiltered you are also reading the ac ripple especially if it is
a digital (rather than analogue) meter.
Again, if you want to try it as a servo power supply, just stick a large
electrolytic after the rectifier.
