Morning on the Salish Sea
A composite photograph from the southwest shoreline of North
Pender Island,
about 6:00 hrs near the summer solstice.
The left edge of the picture is
bearing
approximately 100 degrees and the right edge is approximately 280 degrees; the center is approximately south.
At the far left, Boundary Pass is between North Pender and
Stuart Islands.
To the right of Stuart is
Haro Strait.
Approximately in the center of the picture is
Moresby Island.
Portland Island is behind the leftmost of the two large
Coast Douglas-firs
and
Saltspring Island
extends from the largest fir to the
right margin. The ramp shaped peak at the far right is Mount Maxwell.
Stuart and more distant islands to the east of Haro are
in
San Juan County, WA, USA.
North Pender, Moresby and other
islands to the west of Haro are Southern Gulf Islands
within the
Islands Trust of British
Columbia, Canada. Mountains of the
Olympic Peninsula, WA at the
horizon are indiscernible in this picture. This view has remained
essentially unchanged for at least ten millenia.

Q. Why is your domicile at Pender Island? It seems remote and inconvenient.
A. 48.7693d N, 123.3053d W, 30 m to be more specific.
I'm not satisfied with the urban lifestyle. It facilitates obliviousness
to the biosphere, destruction of ecosystems, inefficient use of
resources and a generally crass mentality.
Q. Why did your eaddress change from peter_easthope... to egeria...
to shark...?
A. About the middle of September, 2003 the GulfNet account began
receiving messages, apparently generated by the
swen virus.
During the weekend of September 20/21 my account received enough
bogus messages to fill the disk drives and put GulfNet out of
commission for a few hours. GulfNet is a small system maintained
by volunteers. The only workable solution was to close the original
account and open a new one with userid egeria. Not long after
resubscribing to a few mailing lists egeria began receiving spam.
The account name was changed to shark. The problem wasted
about 16 hours of my time and more time of the voluntary
administrators of GulfNet.
Swen has capabilities never seen previously. Any author of a virus
can aim to incorporate similar and worse capabilities in his code.
Swen appears to be the miniscule tip of a big iceberg.
The number of viruses continues to grow without bound while
the time available for execution of virus scanning software is
bounded. The prospect is not good, even for people who refrain
from using the operating systems in which these viruses propagate.
Q. Where did you find the odd names, egeria and shark, for
previous email addresses?
A. Refer to a chart of the Pender Islands and vicinity. Canadian
Nautical Chart 3452, Moresby Passage to Gabriola Passage, for
example.

A. Just solve any of the
Clay Millennium Prize Problems
except for the
Poincare Conjecture.
Q. Why are the X-ray images posted?
A. Earlier X-ray films were lost in a clerical error. In the event that the
femur is fractured again, these images will be helpful to the surgeon.
They might also interest candidates for similar repair and orthopaedic residents.
