This is a before
picture of the cottage lot.
You can get the orientation of this picture by finding the landmarks
'fireplace' and 'rock' on the map. This picture was taken in Summer 1983.
As you can see, there was hardly a tree and no flowers -
of course, you'd expect things to change
after so many years!
The fireplace is made of rocks and the base measures 6' X 9'8".
Apparently, at one time, the land housed a large nuns' residence,
and the fireplace and a well were all that remained.
This is a jointly-owned family cottage, however, all the credit for any work that is/has been done there must go to my parents, Mike and Mary Luty. The gardens are my mom's. She started off with a couple and, over the years, added more; made existing ones bigger; joined smaller ones together - typical gardener, I guess.
The soil in this area is sandy, despite manure and compost being added every year - roots must go pretty deep for the plants to survive during hot summer weeks when nobody is out there to water them.
