New Years Cards

Every year we create a set of limited edition cards/objects to celebrate the new year. We try different materials, techniques and processes and whoever is visiting us over the holidays, gets to help and gets a credit line. These objects have become collectors items and sought after ephemera!

2011 New Year
edition of about 30
Dutch Copper Anniversary
On January 10th, we celebrated our 12 1/2 years wedding anniversary in Cuba! This card was letterpressed printed in copper and laser printed inside

2010 New Year
edition of about 60
"Go with the flow ... or not!".
The cover and back images is a drawing by Peter's grandfather drawn when he was 13 (laser printed). The inside was letterpress printed and sparkles were added when the ink was wet. The people who received this card are still picking up the pieces from their carpet!

2009 New Year
edition of about 109
"use less stuff".
Letterpress printed on both sides on 4 inch coasters with strings attached to made it a thaumatrope. Printers included Peter, Jane and James and Mieka Tilley. Click on image to see the two sides. The thaumatrope was inserted into a laserprinted card "make 2009 a 3 dimensional year".

2008 New Year
edition of 101
"Ignorance".
Letterpress printed on vellum by Peter, folded to the shape of the infinity symbol and sealed with a laserprinted label. Click on image to see the piece as it opens.

2007 New Year
variable edition of about 130 - each one is different
"Lucky 7".
The second printing of silver and red ink was handrolled onto the wood and lead type to create a set of unique and unusual sevens.

2006 New Year
edition of 83
"Sagehill".
This is the year the house was finally painted sage - no longer pink! The photo was first printed on an inkjet printer, then the text was letterpress printed.

2005 New Year

"2s and 5sand 0s".
Peter letterpress printed a set of overlaying wood type numbers. The sheet was cut into 4 to create 4 different cards.

2004 New Year
variable edition of 227
"Luna shows the way, find your centre - laugh, cry, sing, dance around the fire".
This haiku card uses a rubber stamp as the labrinth moon, a linocut of trees, and ripped handmade papers to create a set of cards showing the four seasons. Letterpress printed in Balfour, Dec '03 by Peter, Jane and her son, James Tilley.

2003 New Year
unlimited edition
"New, Neu, Bago, Nieuw".
Whether you say 'new' in English, German, Dutch or Fillipino, the four languages of our family - it was a year of 'new' for us. New address, new press name and the beginning of a new life! Letterpress printed in Balfour, Jan '03 by Peter, Jane and her daughter, Mieka Tilley.

2002 New Year
variable edition of 150
We tried many ways to show the word '2002', from roman numerals, morse code to braille. The saying 'work to live' (and not live to work) was our resolution! Letterpress printed Cincinnati in Dec '01 by Peter, Jane and her children, James and Mieka Tilley.

2001 New Year
edition of 101
This small (10cm x 10cm) to-and-fro booklet was a typographic takeoff of the typical holiday letter many send every year. Each page gave the details of one month of an ever changing year! Computer generated type and photocopied images were created in Cincinnati in Jan '01 by Peter and Jane.

2000 New Year

"Decide what's important - and do it"
We had great fun doing this card, from kissing, stamping wine bottles, letterpress printing to burning through the paper with the aid of a very hot pipe! A multi media printing at Pilot Bay in Dec '99 by Peter, his sister Rita Bartl, Jane and her children James and Mieka Tilley.

A polymer plate was made of a stipled drawing of the studio at Pilot Bay. "There is no such thing as a boring day at the centre of the universe! Letterpress printed in Edmonton in Jan '98 by Peter and Jane.

"Life's a slice - grab a piece of it in '98!"
Our first reduction linocut showing the scene of the bay from the cliff. Letterpress printed in Edmonton in Dec '97 by Peter, Jane and her son, James Tilley.

1997 New Year

"Although the corner on '97 has been lifted . . . there's still time to wish you a happy new year"
This was our first card production as a couple, Peter was living in Edmonton, and Jane in Medicine Hat and when possible, together at Pilot Bay. One of the images reflects that geography, the other is of Buddy, our cat. The computer collage of photos was assembled in Calgary and printed in Medicine Hat in Feb '97 by Peter and Jane.
