Andrew Monaghan, I am researching Giles McDOWELL (1843?-1922 Father: Ely McDOWELL Mother: Mary MILLS, died possibly in 1905) from Dursley. He married Mary HILL (1845? - 1929, Father: James HILL, Mother: Elizabeth?) from Stinchcombe between 1863 and 1865. Giles and his wife emigrated to Sydney around the same time. We know that Giles' family lived in Woodmancote Rd, Dursley and that he had an older brother named Tom who was born perhaps in 1837. Any information on any of these people or those related to them would be of interest. Giles McDOWELL became one of the first inspector of Detectives for the newly formed NSW Police Force and consequently holds a place in Australia's history. We know very little of his background or upbringing.

Judith Warren. I am trying to find information concerning "Old Crown Inn" in Uley not far from the Owlpen. I have recently found a letter dating January 16, 1892 from A. POWELL to "My Dear Sister", I believe is my great great grandmother, Mary TAYLOR who died in Memphis, Tennessee in 1908.Ê "Old Crown Inn" was the return address on the letter. Other family names I am interested in are RAVENALL and BOULTON.

Jennifer Russell, I am researching the SMITH family who lived at Owlpen Lodge in the 1870's/80's. William SMITH (my Great Grandfather) was in charge of the gardens at Owlpen House/Manor. He and his wife Elizabeth had 7 children there, the eldest Emily May was my grandmother. He was also a Churchwarden at the Holy Cross Church, Owlpen for 20 years. He subsequently moved to BeechÊHouse, Uley where he died in 1926 and Elizabeth died in 1929. They are both buried in Owlpen churchyard. I have a photograph of him taken with 15 members of his staff at Owlpen House with my aunt and uncle (as children) standing in the front. My Grandmother was married at the Church in 1900 as were other family members at a double wedding there in 1905 where the reception was at Owlpen Manor at the invitation of Mrs. Rose TRENT--STOUGHTON (who was Godmother to my Aunt - Evelyn Rose SMITH) and I have a photograph of the Wedding party. Although I have most of the dates relating to my Gt. Grandparents (apart from their birth details - William was born in Tottenham sometime in 1852 and Elizabeth in Porlock in 1845/6), any additional information or stories anyone can give me would be gratefully received. Likewise, if anyone had any relations who were also working in the gardens and would like a photo-copy of my photograph please get in touch with me.

Am especially looking for birth, marriage and death details that go beyond what is found in the online church records and censuses. Textural detail such as wills would be a dream come true! And who were the parents of Thomas BRUTON, born 1695 in Bagpath?

Mary Williams, my grandfather was born in Dursley orÊ I think it was Cam to be precise. He was born in 1894 I think (I will have to check with my mother) His name was Albert John BENNETT. Apart from an exact date, that's pretty much all I know. I was wondering, where's the best place to find out about other BENNETT who might be a relation?

Robert Stockwell, reaching Robert STOCKWELL who married Elizabeth (Betty) MUNDAY (MONDAY) in North Nibley in May 1760. The Parish marriage details imply Robert came from / lived in Bibury. I have not yet found any other record of him and would like to put a request up for information under Bibury and North Nibley. My ancestors seem to have been well spread across Gloucestershire; Bibury, North Nibley, Stroud, Saul, Kings Stanley, Leonard Stanley, and Dursley.
