The NEW family of Evesham
Early references to ‘NEW’ in the region are:
1327 Gloucester Subsidy Roll, p.38-39. WILLIAM NEW, of Northway (nr. Ashchurch & Tewkesbury), listed as a taxpayer. The Victoria County History of Gloucester, Vol 8 p.182, commented that he was “perhaps an ancestor of JOHN NEW who had a large estate there in the nineteenth century”. 1370 Dec. 21. HENRY NEWE, of Cheltenham, ordained a Secular Acolyte by the Bishop of Worcester in the Parish Church of Hartlebury.
1396 (from the Victoria County History of Worcs., Vol IV p.451) “A ..... rule of terror was established at Ombersley by THOMAS ATTE NEW and William Ford in 1396. Gathering to them certain unknown men, they bonded together to overawe Ombersley, especially attacking William vicar of Ombersley .....” He sounds like one of us.
1468 June 11. JOHN NEW, of the Diocese of Worcester, ordained a Secular Subdeacon by the Bishop of Worcester in the Parish Church of Cirencester. Sept. 24, ordained a Secular Deacon by the Bishop of Worcester at Bristol. 1469 Feb 25, ordained a Secular Priest by the Bishop of Worcester in Worcester Cathedral.
The early “le Newe” form of the name indicates a newcomer to a place (similarly Newcomen, Newman, le Strange), perhaps escaping from feudal obligations elsewhere. The “atte New” form indicates someone living near a Yew tree - similarly Nash and Noakes (near an Ash and Oaks). The name was gained by several different people in different places; most of the English populace had surnames by 1300.

His Will mentions as occupants of two of his properties, separately, William HUXLEY and Elizabeth HUXLEY. These may be brother and sister and their parents may be Elizabeth NEW, born abt. 1630, who married Richard HUXLEY on the 28 April 1652 at All Saints Ch., Evesham. This Elizabeth NEW may be James NEW’s aunt!

The use of “Callow” and “Edward Callow” as forenames has occurred in many generations down to the present day amongst the descendants of the above Anthony NEW and his wife Winifred CALLOW. Moreover, the forenames “Edmund Callow” occur in three successive generations among the descendants of Richard NEW, above. A “Callow” connection – a marriage – has not yet been found in this line; nor have the origins of Winifred’s father, Edward CALLOW. Reputed to have brought the first car (automobile) into Evesham.
A story told by my father Les New concerned, supposedly, a great-uncle who moved house from Evesham across the river to Bengeworth. When the time for the next election approached his neighbours realized that, as he came from over there, he had probably previously voted (say) Tory whilst they in Bengeworth would vote the opposite way, Liberal. Three of them knocked on his door to invite him to step outside to discuss his politics. He, through the closed door, said that being as there were three of them and only one of him if he came out he would bring his shotgun. They persisted, so out he went, with the gun. They ran. Being unable to resist the temptation he helped them on their way with a blast of birdshot, allegedly winging one of them. Dad claimed he got six months in Worcester Prison. A good story; however the "other Bob New" identifies the miscreant as his grandfather William Hartland New (Joe New’s cousin), who in fact was fined only 5s, so the offence couldn't have been so serious. But he did get three months for knocking some fellow through a shop window during Stratford Mop fair.
Joe and Amelia New’s marriage broke up and Les and his sisters went with their mother to live in Worcester. Joe then had a housekeeper, Mrs. Steptoe, who brought her nephew, Jacky Bedenham, with her. Town gossip had it that Jacky was Joe’s son but the truth is that this was not so and that Jacky and his brother Bill were orphans; Jacky was taken in by this aunt, and Bill by another aunt in Birmingham. Jacky was very much liked by Joe and became in effect his adopted son. Later Jackie married Catherine New, daughter of William Hartland New (above), Joe’s cousin. Les was returned to his father at age about 12 so as not to miss an inheritance, and when Joe died Jacky inherited the Parks Farm and my father some houses and a market garden at Kings Road (freehold). He had already received orchards and open land at Charlton (glebe land held by ‘Evesham Custom’) to stop him emigrating to New Zealand. After WW2 (circa 1946/7) the Kings Road market garden was compulsorily purchased, at agricultural prices, by the ‘Council’ who built ‘prefabs’ on it – still there now (2002).
Kath Eden also spent her childhood in Worcester and then returned to Evesham with her mother, who warned her to avoid the News as they were a "rough family". She evidently didn’t accept that advice but in her turn similarly warned her future daughters-in-law so that any complaints about mine or Nigel’s habits and conduct could be met with "but you was warned!"

SOURCES: Pre-1880 is almost entirely from Philip Percy New, his book “Notes of English Families of the Name of New”, 1886, and two sheets, Pedigrees A & B, 1880. My copy of Pedigree A had some additions and changes in an unknown hand which, where readable, I have included here. P.P. New’s informant was Herbert New, solicitor (lawyer) of Evesham. Also available is a chart from Anthony S.B. New of his and his ancestor Herbert New’s side of the family. This showed a father, James NEW 1631- , for James NEW c.1655-1725. The provenance (some record in support) of this James New is unknown to myself and Mr Anthony S.B. New; there might be something, after all Herbert New gathered all the other material which seems generally unquestionable, but if he had found a baptism recorded for James New in 1631 he would also have identified this James’s father! None such is stated.
At that time there were several people named New in the Evesham area, all perhaps related, who may have left descendants of that name in the region but who are not recorded here. The village of Bredon, some 10 miles from Evesham, was/is the centre of a New clan originating there in medieval times and probably related to our Evesham News but I have no linked pedigree for them.
Other correspondents are Robert (the other ‘Bob’) Hartland New of Broadway & Evesham, Chris Connor and Raymond New of Masterton, New Zealand, Peter John New of Solihull and Mike Bain of Runcorn, Cheshire.
Mike Bain’s ancestor Alice New married William GEORGE of Evesham; it’s suggested that William is related to the WW1 Prime Minister DAVID LLOYD GEORGE. Mike Bain would appreciate any information on the GEORGE family to:

A “brickwall” is the pre-Civil War antecedents of James NEW born in the 1650s (First Generation above). The only chink in this wall so far is the possibility that his aunt was the Elizabeth NEW who married Richard HUXLEY in 1652. If this is so then Elizabeth can’t be the daughter of James NEW who married Joan HAYNES at All Saints’ in Oct. 1631. His daughter Elizabeth died as a child and was buried at All Saints’ on 19 July 1636. This James NEW (who could be the James NEW, the son of John New, baptized in 1608 at St. Lawrence, Evesham) could be the father of James NEW ‘born in the 1650s’. Or both he and Elizabeth could be the children of Louey John NEW, or even some other unrecorded NEW!
An intriguing puzzle is the use of “Callow” and “Edward Callow” as forenames in many generations down to the present day in one branch of the family, and “Edmund Callow” in three successive generations in another, separate, branch. In the first branch a wife’s father was Edward CALLOW; no such reason is yet known for the second. All this may indicate that there was something special about the Callow family and name; a possibility is the Callow family as recorded in the Visitation of Gloucester 1623, pages 34 –36 in the Harleian publication – see: http://www.uk-genealogy.org.uk/england/Gloucestershire/visitations/p44.html
