The roots are called Banlangen
The leaves are called Daqingye

Chemical composition:

Indican, indigo, indirubin, isatan B, uridine, hypoxanthine, uracil,
salicylic acid, qingdainone, daucosterol, adenosine, kinetin

Properties: bitter, cold

Channels entered:  Heart, stomach and lung

Common name:  Woad root

Dosage:  10 - 15 grams in decoction

Functions:

1.  Clears heat
2.  eliminates toxins
3.  cools blood
4.  benefits the throat

Pharmacological Effects:

1.  antibiotic - Marked anti-bacterial effects in vitro against
Staphylococcus aureus
Diplococcus pneumoniae
E - coli
Salmonella typhi
leptospira
Certain influenze viruses
2.  Immunostimulant
Intraperitoneal injection of a Ban langen preparation has been associated
with an increased activity of natural killer cells in mice.
3.  Antiplatelet
Administration of a Banlangen preparation is associated with marked
inhibition of platelet aggregation in rabbits.

UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTION

Banlangen is commonly incorporated into herbal formulas for treatment of
upper respiratory tract infection.

VIRAL INFECTION OF THE SKIN

In a clinical study of 30 patients, administration of a Banlangen
preparation was associated with marked effectiveness for treatment of herpes
infection  of the skin. The herbal preparation was applied topically to the
affected areas.

HERB - DRUG INTERACTION

Patients who are allergic to sulfonylureas and sulfonaomines may also be
allergic to Qing Dai, Daqingye and Banlangen

ANTICOAGULANT OR ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Banlangen has antiplatelet action, and should be used with caution in patien
ts who take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication.
Though this potential interaction has not been documented, this herb may
potentiate the effect of drugs such as warfarin.
