Ray Jones to be inducted into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame

Four builders, four athletes and two teams will be inducted into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame during the annual awards ceremonies at the Centennial Auditorium on Nov. 5.

John (Ray) Jones emigrated from Wales and Scotland to Canada in 1966 and when he moved to Saskatoon in 1969, he became involved in soccer. He played on Saskatoon United teams which won the Saskatchewan Shield three times and managed United from 1979 to 1991, during a time when they won the Saskatchewan Shield five times. He was instrumental in launching mini-soccer in Saskatoon in 1971 and became an executive member of the Saskatoon and District Soccer Association and the Youth Soccer Association. He later served on the Saskatchewan Soccer Association board. He was venue manager for both the Air Canada Challenge Cup in 1988 and the Jeux Canada Summer Games in 1989. He was chair of the Canadian championships in 1991 and a volunteer on the committee which built the Saskatoon Kinsmen-Henk Ruys Soccer Centre in 1998.
