Onsen Use and Etiquette

USING THE OFURO

  1. Enter the changing room through the appropriate door: Otoko Kanji  For Women  Onna Kanji   For Men

  2. Remove your clothes and put them in the basket or locker provided. Take only the small wash towel.

  3. Keeping your privates covered with the wash towel, enter the bathing area closing any door behind you.

  4. Wash or rinse your body briefly using the showers/faucets before entering the first time.

  5. Soak for a short while being careful not to get too hot.

  6. Wash your body at the faucets.

  7. After your last dip in the Ofuro, DO NOT rinse again.

ONSEN ETIQUETTE

There is an established code of etiquette for Onsen.  Observing the following rules will result in a  pleasurable experience for everyone:

  • Do not enter the Ofuro in a bathing suit unless the rules of the hotel or resort require it.
  • ABSOLUTELY NEVER use soap or shampoo in the bath itself. Washing is done outside at the taps/showers.
  • Wash with soap or at least rinse well before entering the Ofuro for the first time.
  • Avoid making loud noises or rowdy behaviour in the Ofuro. Onsen are places for quiet relaxation or conversation.
  • Avoid staring. Respect others privacy and modesty.
  • Do not wash clothes in the Ofuro.
