  • 12/14/11 - Marion Bews, former corporate secretary to the Browne family at CKOV Kelowna, died December 8 at age 93. She served with the station from 1943 until retirment in the late 1970s.   • 11/13/11 - Don Shafer, Kelowna-based vice-president and regional manager for Astral Media says the recent shut-down of the newsroom at Sun FM CICF-FM 105.7 Vernon is an unfortunate change reflecting the times.   • 10/31/11 - CFJC-TV Kamloops video journalist Andrew Hopkins has been hired as a new evening/weekend reporter at News1130 CKWX AM Vancouver. He's a 2005 BCIT Broadcast Journalism program graduate, has worked in radio in Williams Lake, Kamloops and Fort St. John and is a 2009 Jack Webster Foundation Fellowship Award recipient.
  • 10/27/11 - Another addition to The Juice CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna, as Gary Long moves from his position as PD at 94X CIRX-FM 94.3 Prince George to assume the duties of morning anchor, music director and assistant program director.
  • 10/26/11 - The CRTC has approved an application by CBC to add a new FM transmitter in Lillooet to rebroadcast the programming of CBTK-FM 88.9 Kelowna. It will operate at 92.7 MHz with an ERP of 90 watts non-directional at -816.5 metres HAAT, and will replace the current AM rebroadcast transmitter. CRTC decision
  • 10/24/11 - Montreal and Calgary broadcaster Steve Shannon has submitted an application to the CRTC for a new community station in Barriere. If approved, he hopes to be up and running by next summer. Jill Hayward - Barriere Star Journal
  • 10/20/11 - Vancouver native Erin Chase starts next month as evening host and marketing director at The Juice CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna. She was most recently part of the morning team at Jack CJAQ-FM 96.9 Calgary.

  • 01/20/11 - Prof. Anne MacLennan of the Remembering Radio Project is conducting a national study on Canadian radio during the 1930s. Her research group is currently looking for people 78 years and older who lived in B.C. during the 1930s to conduct phone interviews (usually 15 to 30 minutes) about their memories of early radio.   • 11/24/10 - CHOR AM 1450 Summerland is now broadcasting on FM as EZ Rock 98.5.  The CRTC authorized the move on June 17, 2010 and allows simulcast programming on AM for three months.
  • 10/28/10 - Castanet, an offshoot of Silk FM CILK-FM 101.5 Kelowna, has become the first independent online news site to become a member of the B.C. Press Council.  The Press Council decided at an October 8 board meeting that membership would be extended to independent online news sites.  bclocalnews.com
  • 10/22/10 - The CRTC has approved the acquisition of TV assets of CanWest Global Communications Corp. by Shaw Communications Inc.   The deal gives Shaw ownership over the Global television network, which includes CHBC-TV/2 Kelowna, and a host of specialty channels.  The Commission accepted Shaw's proposal to spend $180.1 million over the next seven years to support the transition to digital television by converting 67 analog transmitters in smaller markets to digital, provide and install a satellite receiver and dish, at no charge, to viewers who lose access to over-the-air signals of their local or regional television stations as of August 31, 2011, as well as free satellite access to those signals, along with a number of other concessions.  CRTC decision  Shaw release
  • 09/28/10 - Ian MacKinnon from KOOL FM CKCE-FM 101.5 Calgary joins Sun FM CHSU-FM 99.9 Kelowna for evenings and weekends.  He has also worked on air in Camrose and Edmonton.
  • 09/20/10 - Former CHIM-FM and CILK-FM Kelowna announcer and program director Douglas Johnston died yesterday following a heart attack.   Born in 1949, he was a long time air personality at The Jewel CJWL-FM 98.5 Ottawa.  The Jewel obituary

  • 04/27/10 - CIFM-FM 98.3 Kamloops p.m. drive host Leo Baggio is being promoted to Director of Radio Programming and Operations for the Pattison Broadcast Group Kamloops Radio Division.
  • 02/19/10 - The Superior Court of Ontario has given the nod to Shaw Communications to take control of Canwest Global Communications.  Shaw revealed that its investment amounts to a minimum of $95-million in exchange for 20 per cent of the equity and an 80-per-cent voting interest in the restructured company.  A competing bid from private equity firm Catalyst Capital Group was set aside.  Globe and Mail
  • 02/11/10 - Astral Media has applied to the CRTC to flip CHOR AM 1450 Summerland to the FM band.   The new station would operate at 98.5 MHz with a maximum ERP of 100 watts at 348 metres HAAT.  Astral proposes a mainstream adult contemporary format.   The Commission previously denied an application to flip the station to FM in August 2005 saying that it would give the owner at the time, Standard Broadcasting, three stations with effective coverage of the Penticton market.  CRTC info  CRTC 2005 denial

  • 01/20/10 - Former CFOX-FM 99.3 Vancouver weekend host Katie Campbell has landed the position of promotions director at The Juice CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna.  She starts January 25.
  • 01/08/10 - The Industry Canada database notes that the call letters for B-103 CKOV-FM 103.1 Kelowna have been changed to CKQQ-FM.
  • 01/08/10 - Canwest Global Communications Corp's publishing group has been put up for sale following a court filing for creditor protection.  It includes the Victoria Times Colonist, Vancouver Sun and Province, and a number of community newspapers.  Global Television, locally CHBC-TV/2 Kelowna, and some specialty channels, has been under creditor protection since October 6.  Financial Post
  • 11/03/09 - Early 1950s CKOK Penticton broadcaster Norris McLean, whose career was mostly in Edmonton radio and television, was known for his warm and tender personality.  He died October 4 at age 76.  Cigdem Iltan, Edmonton Journal
  • 10/06/09 - Canwest Media Inc., the holding company for Canwest Global Communications Corp. has filed for bankruptcy protection.  Canwest owns the Global Television network, which includes CHBC-TV/2 Kelowna and Global BC CHAN-TV/8 Vancouver, along with daily newspapers and specialty TV channels.  The company expects the court ordered restructuring of its debt to take four to six months.  Globe and Mail  Financial Post
  • 09/14/09 - CFJC-TV/4 Kamloops midday news host/producer and 5 p.m. weather reporter Tracy Pellizzari has added duties as she joins the team as an anchor for the 6:30 and 11 p.m. newscasts.
  • 09/01/09 - Ted Farr has been appointed general manager of The Juice CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna effective September 8.  He is also president of his own consulting company, Ted Farr Media.  He has held management positions in Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg.
  • 09/01/09 - Q101 CKMQ-FM 101.1 Merritt officially launched at 1:01 p.m. yesterday.  The first song aired, introduced by Bryan Adams, was his own song, Here I Am.  The station provides the first 24 hours per day, 7 days per week local radio service in Merritt and the Nicola Valley and will simulcast on its old AM 1230 frequency until November 30.  At that time CJNL AM 1230 will become a full time rebroadcaster of CHNL AM 610 Kamloops.
  • 08/16/09 - Q101 CKMQ-FM 101.1 Merritt has begun testing its new signal.  Official sign-on is scheduled for 1:01 p.m. Monday, August 31.
  • 07/29/09 - In a recent poll, 84% of Kamloops residents say it is unfair that they will be deprived access to free TV signals following a CRTC ruling that requires broadcasters to provide over-the-air signals in only 29 major cities after the transition to digital TV.  6% of Kamloops' viewers watch TV over the air.  Broadcaster Magazine
  • 07/27/09 - Robert Pye, whose broadcast career included CKOK Penticton, CHBC-TV and CILK-FM Kelowna and the CBC national radio network, died in Winfield July 16.  He was 73.  There will be no service by request.  Penticton Herald obituary.
  • 07/20/09 - Sun FM CHSU-FM 99.9 and Silk CILK-FM 101.5 Kelowna returned to music programming early this morning, continuing with regular updates on the West Kelowna fires while sister station AM 1150 CKFR continues with wall to wall coverage.
  • 07/19/09 - AM 1150 CKFR along with sister stations Sun FM CHSU-FM 99.9 and Silk CILK-FM 101.5 Kelowna suspended all regular programming Saturday afternoon to provide continuing coverage of the West Kelowna fire situation.
  • 07/04/09 - When CJNL AM 1230 Merritt moves to FM, it will identify as Q101 with the slogan Merritt's Music Mix and official call letters CKMQ-FM.  Sign on is scheduled for 1:01 p.m. Monday, August 31.  CHNL AM 610 Kamloops will then re-broadcast its programming on 1230 kHz.  The CRTC approved the changes on April 24.
  • 06/24/09 - Lieutenant Gerry Pash has retired from his military role with the Canadian Forces Reserve at age 65.  He spent numerous years in broadcasting at CKDA Victoria, CHWK Chilliwack and was VP and Managing Director of Okanagan Radio in Penticton from 1972-89.  He will continue as a civilian public affairs officer for the Canadian Forces Reserve.  A News
  • 05/09/09 - Ken Allan joonyer, who has entertained Vancouver radio listeners for the past nine years, is moving back to his hometown.   Effective May 25, he takes over as afternoon drive host at The Juice CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna.
  • 04/29/09 - Canadian sports broadcasting legend and CBC Television veteran Ted Reynolds died early Tuesday morning at age 83.  His career, which began at CFJC radio in Kamloops, spanned more than 50 years, 35 of them with CBC Television, and included play-by-play and Olympic Games.  He was also a freelance broadcaster, retiring two years ago at age 81.  CBC news
  • 04/24/09 - The CRTC has approved an application by Merritt Broadcasting Ltd. to flip CJNL AM 1230 Merritt to the FM band.  It will operate at 101.1 MHz with an effective radiated power of 200 watts with an AC format.  The Commission also has approved an application by N L Broadcasting Ltd. to re-broadcast the programming of CHNL AM 610 Kamloops on 1230 kHz in Merritt with 1000 watts day/night, with the same technical parameters as the current CJNL.  CRTC decision
  • 04/15/09 - BC Children's Hospital Foundation has announced that it has formed a partnership with The Jim Pattison Broadcast Group.  Under the partnership, Pattison's 19 radio stations in BC will support the foundation in its efforts to promote the $200-million Campaign for BC Children around the province.  The Foundation also has a partnership with Global BC CHAN-TV/8 Vancouver, which has been providing news coverage and airing campaign public service announcements.  Broadcaster Magazine
  • 04/08/09 - The federal government is considering a $150-million local programming fund tied to news and current affairs programming to help smaller market TV stations in Canada.  Members of Parliament have grown concerned in recent weeks that the CRTC is not moving fast enough to address the prospect that some small stations could be shut down.  CBC eligiblity is still unclear.  CanWest Global Communications has indicated it may close its five-city network E!, which includes CHEK-TV/6 Victoria and CHBC-TV/2 Kelowna, if a buyer can't be found.  Grant Robertson, Globe and Mail  CBC News
  • 02/26/09 - The CRTC has approved an application by Sun Country Radio Ltd. to acquire the assets of CKKO-FM 96.3 Kelowna from Sun Country Cablevision Ltd.  The acquisition of assets was undertaken solely for the corporate restructuring purposes of separating the radio undertaking from Sun Country Cablevision’s other assets.  CRTC decision
  • 02/18/09 - The CRTC has approved a frequency change for VF2329 Big White Mountain from 103.9 MHz to 93.1 MHz and an increase in the effective height of its antenna from 215 to 600.8 meters above average terrain.  All other technical parameters remain unchanged.  The transmitter rebroadcasts CILK-FM 101.5 Kelowna.  The application was the result of the licensing of Vista Broadcasting's new station, CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna.  CRTC decision
  • 02/06/09 - Canwest Global Communications has given itself six to eight weeks to complete a review of its E! network stations in Kelowna, Victoria, Montreal, Hamilton and Red Deer and says it has received interest from potential buyers.  Two major players, Rogers Communications and Astral Media, say they are not looking at the E! network assets.  The stations could be shut down if a buyer can't be found in the next two months.  Grant Robertson, Globe and Mail  Castanet
  • 12/23/08 - Astral Media Radio has applied to the CRTC to change the frequency of its Silk CILK-FM 101.5 Kelowna transmitter VF2329 at Big White Mountain from 103.9 to 93.1 MHz and increasing HAAT from 215 metres to 600.8 meters.  The change is necessitated by the recent approval of the Vista Radio application for a new FM station in Kelowna at 103.9 MHz.  CRTC info   
  • 11/21/08 - The CRTC has once again denied an application by the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group to acquire the assets of CIGV-FM 100.7 Penticton from Great Valleys Radio Ltd.  After the previous application was denied last February, the company proposed to reduce the average ERP of CIGV-FM from 6,300 watts to 3,100 watts to eliminate the overlap between the 3mV/m contours with  Pattison’s stations in Kelowna.   The Commission stated that the substantial decrease to the contour would not constitute an effective use of the frequency.  CRTC decision
  • 11/18/08 - Former Vancouver radio newsman Jack Bennest was re-elected Saturday in the growing Town of Oliver, topping the poll and getting more votes and a higher rating than anyone in the councillors position in recent memory.  Bennest was first elected in 1988 and has served three terms.  He is now retired from full time employment, is starting a consulting company and operates the BC Radio History website.  In addition, Okanagan broadcaster Patrick Nichol was re-elected to Vernon City Council.
  • 11/13/08 - Sun Country Radio Ltd. has applied to the CRTC to acquire the assets of CKKO-FM 96.3 Kelowna from Sun Country Cablevision Ltd.   The application is effectively a corporate reorganization.  CRTC info
  • 11/13/08 - Merritt Broadcasting Ltd. has applied to the CRTC to move CJNL AM 1230 Merritt to FM.   It is proposed to operate on 101.1 MHz with an ERP of 200 watts omni-directional with a HAAT of 601.4 metres.  The conversion is tied to an application filed by N L Broadcasting Ltd., licensee of CHNL AM 610 Kamloops, to add an AM transmitter at Merritt to operate at 1230 kHz with a power of 1,000 watts day and night.  CRTC info #1   CRTC info #2
  • 11/12/08 - CanWest Global is cutting five per cent of its nationwide workforce, 560 jobs in all, as it streamlines operations.  Included are over 40 at the company's three TV stations in British Columbia.  23 production, sales and managerial jobs are being cut at CHBC Kelowna, 18 at CHEK Victoria and at least four at Global Vancouver.  Some on-air personnel also have been laid off.  The commercial production departments of CHEK and CHBC are also being shut down.  In addition, the CHBC evening newscast will be anchored from the CHEK studio in Victoria.  Shane Bigham, News1130  Castanet
  • 11/06/08 - K963 Kelowna's Classic Rock CKKO-FM 96.3 officially signed on at 8 a.m. Tuesday (11/04) with an introduction emphasizing the station's local ownership followed by You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet by Bachman-Turner Overdrive.  On-air personalities include Kevin McGowan and Chris Cleaver mornings, Joel Jeffrey middays, Darlene Check p.m. drive and Rob Balsdon evenings.
  • 10/31/08 - The CRTC has approved an application by the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group to acquire the assets of CKIZ-FM 107.5 Vernon and its transmitter CKIZ-FM-1 Enderby from Rogers Broadcasting Limited.   The Commission denied a previous application due to the station's overlap into the Kelowna market.  Pattison has since made a slight modification to the 3mV/m contour.   • 10/29/08 - After less than a month since official sign-on, The Juice CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna has adjusted its morning show.  Now teamed up with co-host Liz McKinney is John Michaels, who replaces “Moose” Trevor Stoyko.
  • 10/24/08 - After 26 years on CBC Radio, broadcaster Neil Gillon signed off for the last time October 10 as the co-host of the morning show Daybreak South.  A special retirement broadcast was held at the Roasted Bean Coffee Shop in Kelowna.  CBC news
  • 09/30/08 - The Juice CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna is officially signed on September 29 with Liz McKinney and “Moose” Trevor Stoyko mornings, Natalee Taylor middays and Jay Stone in p.m. drive.  The Juice plays a Classic Hits music format that encompasses the best of the 80s, 90s and now.
  • 09/13/08 - Vista Radio Ltd.'s new station CJUI-FM 103.9 has been testing over the past week, asking for interference reports.  They are Identifying as "CJUI, The Juice, playing whatever".
  • 09/02/08 - Astral Media Radio Sales has announced that it is representing the two Pattison-owned radio stations in Kelowna effective September 1.  Broadcaster Magazine
  • 08/21/08 - The Jim Pattison Broadcast Group has once again applied to the CRTC to acquire the assets of CIGV-FM 100.7 Penticton.  The Commission  denied a previous application in February, on the grounds that acquisition of CIGV-FM would contravene its Common Ownership Policy.  This time, to eliminate the need for an exception to the Policy in the Kelowna market, Pattison has requested a decrease in the average effective radiated power from 6,300 watts (maximum effective radiated power of 14,000 watts) to an average effective radiated power of 3,100 watts.  The application will be considered at a public hearing commencing October 20 in Cambridge, ON.  CRTC info
  • 08/07/08 - The CRTC has approved application by Vista Radio Ltd. for the use of 103.9 MHz with an average ERP of 5,200 watts (maximum power 10,000 watts).  Vista previously applied to use 96.1 MHz but was denied by the Commission.  CRTC decision  
  • 07/17/08 - The Jim Pattison Broadcast Group has applied to the CRTC to acquire the assets of CKIZ-FM 107.5 Vernon and its 10-watt transmitter CKIZ-FM-1 93.9 Enderby from Rogers Broadcasting Limited.  The Commission will consider the application at a public hearing beginning September 24 in Gatineau, Quebec.  CRTC info
  • 06/01/08 - K963 - Kelowna's Classic Rock CKKO-FM 96.3 has begun testing and has launched its new website, which states it will be on air this Fall.  
  • 05/27/08 - Kelowna's new CKKO-FM 96.3 has released its logo and announced it will identify as K963 - Kelowna's Classic Rock.  The station is expected on air this Fall.  Logo
  • 05/27/08 - Kent Molgat has been named Okanagan Bureau Chief for CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV/32 Vancouver.  He was the longest serving reporter at CHBC-TV/2 Kelowna with 20 years of service.   Prior to CHBC, he was on air at CJIB Vernon.
  • 05/21/08 - Sun Country Cablevision, licensee of the new CKKO-FM 96.3 Kelowna has announced the appointment of Dallas Gray as GM and general sales manager, and Garry Barker as PD and promotions manager.   Gray previously was GSM of the Standard Radio group (now Astral) in Kelowna and Barker is president of the Atlantic Median Institute in Halifax.  They have a combined total of over 60 years of broadcast experience.  CKKO is expected on air this fall.

  • 09/28/07 - The CRTC has approved application by Astral Media to acquire the assets of the radio and television programming undertakings across Canada owned by Standard Radio Inc., which includes two television stations in British Columbia, numerous radio stations in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C., and three radio networks.   The transaction is valued at $1,082,369,866 and is expected to close October 29.  The Commission finds that the number of radio and TV stations that the applicant would own in each of the concerned markets is within established limits.  The deal involves ten stations in the Okanagan.  CRTC decision   Astral Media release

  • 08/29/07 - Oldies CKFR AM 1150 Kelowna flipped to News/Talk/Sports at 10 a.m. today, filling the gap left by the move of CKOV-FM 103.1 from news/talk to country on August 17, as it signed onto the FM band.  The station will run a local news/magazine morning show hosted by Phil Johnson and Whitney Deane, followed by mostly syndicated programming originating at CKNW AM 980 Vancouver.

  • 08/17/07 - B-103 CKOV-FM 103.1 Kelowna officially signed on at noon today with its new country format.  PD Bob Mills says, "CKOV has lost money for years and I'm talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, so a change had to happen."  The station is authorized to simulcast on its old AM 630 frequency for a period of three months.  It is retaining the official CKOV call letters as a tribute to the Browne family, who launched the original station.  CKOV talk show host John Michaels will be joined by Heather Adams, formerly of SILK FM, to host mornings.   • 10/24/05 - CBC Radio 3 personality Alexis Mazurin died Thursday evening (October 20) in Vancouver at the age of 27.  He had been attending the annual Burning Man art festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert in early September when he suffered a massive heart attack in his sleep.  The Penticton born Mazurin was rushed to hospital in Reno where he fell into a coma, then was transferred to Vancouver's St. Paul's Hospital in mid-September.  CBC News

President Robbie Dunn reports, "Since receiving approval from the CRTC for the licence, we have been busy with our planning and have now identified the equipment we need and commissioned a firm to design the interior space. Renovations to our building should commence later this year to accommodate new studios and offices. Next up is creating an identity for the new station and finalizing the programming and marketing plans. We hope to be on air in early summer of 2006."

  • 11/03/04 - Rogers Broadcasting Limited has applied to the CRTC to add a transmitter at Enderby to broadcast the programming of KISS FM CKIZ-FM 107.5 Vernon.  Enderby residents are no longer able to receive the station after it's conversion to FM.  The new transmitter would operate on  93.9 MHz with an ERP of 10 watts at 122.1 metres.  CRTC application

  • 08/04/04 - After a one year hiatus, Radio NL CJNL AM 1230 Merritt will be broadcasting all 60 British Columbia Hockey League junior "A" Merritt Centennials games.  Keegan Goodrich will be handling play-by-play, while morning host Brian Wiebe will provide colour commentary on selected games.  The Merritt Centennials are currently the BCHL's longest serving franchise, having been in Merritt for over 30 years.
  • 07/26/04 - Application for a new commercial station in Kamloops has been made by NL Broadcasting Ltd., current owners of CHNL AM 610.  The application is for country music, a format that disappeared from the city last summer, when B-100 CKBZ-FM 100.1 moved to classic hits.   The CRTC has invited further applications, and If approved, will be the first all-new commercial station in Kamloops since 1984.

  • 04/27/04 - Giant FM CIGV-FM 100.7 Penticton recently returned with a stereo signal.  The station, which claims to have the greatest coverage of any in the B.C. Interior, was one of several forced to operate on standby power after the Okanagan Mountain fire of last August.
  • 04/23/04 - The CRTC has denied application by Standard Radio Inc. to convert CHOR AM 1450 to the FM band on  grounds that the proposed new station would have a much greater coverage area and impact existing services in Penticton and Kelowna.  CRTC decision
  • 03/30/04 - Lt.-Cmdr. Gerry Pash received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation from the Honourable John McCallum at a ceremony in Vancouver on March 26th.  The award citation recognizes the contribution Lt.-Cmdr. Pash has made in the commemoration of the sacrifice of veterans.  Pash was the Vice President
    and Managing Director of Okanagan Radio Limited in Penticton from 1972 to 1989.
  • 03/28/04 - Well known broadcaster Bob Harrison passed away Saturday in Kelowna at the age of 68.  He had worked at CKYL Peace River, CKNL Fort St. John and locally at SILK-FM CILK-FM 101.5 and CKOV AM 630 Kelowna.  There will be no service by request.
  • 01/06/04 - SILK FM CILK-FM 101.5 Kelowna recently returned to full power after running on back-up transmitter facilities since the Okanagan Mountain fire last August.  Several stations were affected by the fire.
  • 12/23/03 - Standard Radio Inc. has applied to the CRTC to convert CHOR AM 1450 Summerland to the FM band.  The new station would operate at 94.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 5,000 watts non-directional at a HAAT of 230 metres with an adult contemporary music format.  CRTC info

  • 10/22/03 - Bob Hall passed away Tuesday, October 21 at the age of 73.  He started his broadcast career at CJAV Port Alberni in 1949.  He moved to CHWK Chilliwack as assistant news director and on-air announcer in 1951.  In 1952 he became news and sports director of CKOV Kelowna, where he stayed until 1965.  That year, he made successful applications for radio licences in Salmon Arm and Revelstoke.  In 1970, as Four Seasons Radio Ltd. he applied for the second AM licence in Kelowna and obtained approval for CKIQ.  In the mid 1980s Four Seasons Radio purchased CJAT Trail and CKKC Nelson/Creston.  Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 26 at The Gathering Place in Salmon Arm.

  • 10/06/03 - The CRTC has approved applications by Jim Pattison Industries for transmitters of Kamloops stations CKBZ-FM on 91.5 MHz and for CIFM-FM on 91.1 to operate in Sun Peaks.  CRTC decision
  • 09/23/03 - Grant Sherwood has died at the age of 63 after suffering from a heart ailment.  He moved from Edmonton to CKOK (now CKOR) Penticton, where he was appointed program director in 1972.  He was the midday host for much of his nearly 30 years with the station and continued work as a photographer in his later years.  Funeral service will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church 1296 Main Street, Penticton at 3.30 p.m. Friday September 26th.
  • 09/20/03 - Bob O'Keefe died September 18th at the age of 47, at Kelowna General Hospital after a short illness.  He spent many years in the radio sales business in San Diego CA, Edson AB and Kelowna, first with SILK-FM and finishing with SUN-FM/The Bullet.   There wil be no funeral service per his wishes.  A celebration of life will be held September 24th from 4:30-9 p.m. at 215 Mills Road.

  • 08/29/03 - The Bullet CKBL AM 1150 Kelowna has relaunched as CKFR Kelowna's Fun Radio with a solid gold format.   The morning show continues to be hosted by Bullet breakfast host Dustin Collins.  Sun FM air staff are shared throughout the rest of the day.  Several specialty shows will appear over the next few weeks along with local hockey broadcasts.  Gerry O'Day of 650 CISL Vancouver will host a Sunday Seventies show.

  • 08/20/03 - The former Vice-President, Managing Director of Okanagan Radio, Gerry Pash recently received a public affairs award from the Assistant Minister of National Defence.   Now, Lt.-Cmdr. Gerry Pash, Senior Staff Officer Public Affairs for Maritime Forces Pacific, he also looks after public affairs for the cadet program in B.C as a secondary duty.  Named BCAB Broadcaster Citizen of the year in 1983 he has been with the Navy Public Affairs Office since 1990.  He is also a recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal from Lt.-Gov.   • 06/29/03 - Bob Leckie, manager of CKWL Williams Lake for many years prior to his retirement in 1982, died Friday (June 27) of cancer at age 77.  He received the B.C. Association of Broadcasters Broadcast Citizen of the Year award in 1978 and had been part owner of Cariboo Broadcasters, which also operated CKCQ Quesnel and CKBX 100 Mile House.

  • 05/11/02 - Broadcast pioneer Fred Weber passed away in West Vancouver May 7th of pneumonia after a lengthy battle with cancer.  He was born in 1922 in Alberta.  He had been an engineer, announcer and executive, involved with radio, TV and cable stations in the Okanagan and northwest B.C., including CKOV, CFCR, CKCQ, CFTK, CKTK, CHTK, CJFW-FM and CKOK.  He was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame in 1988.  A memorial service will be held at West Vancouver United Church, 2062 Esquimalt Ave., West Vancouver on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m.  Canadian Communications Foundation biography

  • 02/01/02 - Laurie Irvine, well known CKWX Vancouver broadcaster of the fifties, passed away January 23rd of a heart condition.  He was born October 20, 1913 and spent over 50 years in broadcasting, including CFJC in Kamloops.   He headed up the Broadcast and Media Communications program at British Columbia Institute of Technology from 1964 to 1974.  A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boal Chapel in North Vancouver.

  • 11/15/01 - Broadcast pioneer Joe Chesney passed away Saturday, November 10 at the age of 82.  He began in radio as a trainee announcer at CFJC Kamloops in 1946.  After a few months, he moved to CJAV Port Alberni until the following year when he went to CKNW New Westminster.   "Uncle Joe" had a vast knowledge of country music and progressed to the morning show at 'NW in October 1947.  He founded CJJC Langley in 1963.  A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday November 24 at Langley United Church, 5673 200th St.

  • 09/16/01 - According to a news item on Milkman Unlimited, CICF AM 1050 Vernon may get their switch from AM to FM delayed as their new transmitter is said to have been re-routed to New York following Tuesday's tragic events. Four FM and eight TV stations were knocked off the air as their transmitters were on the roof of the World Trade Center.  Fox TV news reports that the only local TV currently broadcasting in New York are CBS and an independent station.

  • 08/02/01 - The CRTC has renewed the licences of CTV and Global networks and their affiliated television stations in Canada - subject to a number of conditions.  CRTC News Release

  • 07/30/01 - Veteran country music announcer Bob Bye has passed away just short of his 75th birthday.  Bob died of a heart attack earlier this month at his home in Penticton.  He began his broadcasting career on the Prairies, in Regina and Winnipeg but was best known for his many years, starting in 1966, at former country giant CKWX AM 1130 Vancouver, where he retired in 1989.  Bob's son, Rob Bye is on the air middays on CKLZ FM 104.7 "Power 104" Kelowna.
  • 07/04/01 - Pamela Martin has left BCTV to join Vancouver's CIVT-TV "VTV".  She and Bill Good, who made a similar switch in May, will anchor their 6 pm news.  Network affiliations of Vancouver TV stations will be changing September 1 with VTV becoming the new CTV affiliate and BCTV becoming Global.
  • 06/29/01 - Twenty radio stations in B.C., several of which are in the Okanagan, are part of a package of 60 stations sold Thursday by Montreal-based Telemedia Corp. to Standard Broadcasting Corp. of Toronto. -
  • 06/26/01 - Greg Shannon is no longer doing mornings at CHSU FM 99.9 "Sun FM" Kelowna.   • 05/14/01 - Veteran Newsman Bob Livingston passed away in Kelowna hospital from a very short battle with Cancer.  He spent many years on the west coast with CFUN and CKLG and had moved to Salmon Arm a few years ago.  He spent the last year at KBS in the West Kootenays. - Thanks to Wayne Kelly and Milkman Unlimited for this information.

  • 03/22/01 - Rogers Broadcasting station CJIB AM 940 Vernon, on air since Sept. 1947, has won approval from the CRTC to move to FM 107.5 with an ERP of 46,000 watts.  It will be the city's first commercial FM.  CRTC info

  • 02/01 - OKANAGAN BROADCASTERS pays tribute to two air personalities well known to BC radio listeners.  Rick Honey passed away February 24 after a courageous battle with throat cancer.  He had completed his last air shift just two days earlier at CKBD AM 600 Vancouver.  Daryl Burlingham, known on air as Daryl B, died of a stroke in Winnipeg February 27.

  • 11/00 - CBU-FM-3 FM 89.7 Kelowna (CBC Radio Two) transmitter is currently undergoing tests.  Official launch date is Dec. 1.
  • 08/00 - The CRTC has approved applications by the CBC to add the following Radio Two transmitters:  FM 89.7 in Kelowna with an erp of 6000 watts and FM 105.3 in Kamloops with an erp of 4750 watts.   Projected startup date is November, 2000.
