CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jarret Stoll put the Edmonton Oilers over
.500 for the first time in more than three months with a "lucky
shot."
The rookie center scored 44 seconds into overtime with a
fluttering shot from 30 feet to give the Oilers a 4-3 victory
over the Chicago Blackhawks and a sweep of their season series.
Ethan Moreau skated in from the right side and slid a pass
across to Stoll, who floated a shot that glanced off the glove
of rookie goaltender Matt Underhill, hit the inside of the
crossbar and dropped into the net.
"By fanning on it, I think he (Underhill) misread it because the
puck knuckled on him," Stoll said. "It was definitely a lucky
goal."
Playing in his first NHL game after scheduled starter Michael
Leighton was scratched because of the flu, Underhill was
expecting a harder shot.
"It went off his stick funny," Underhill said. "It kind of went
back on me the other way. I'd like to lose on a better goal
than that."
"It knuckleballed on him and that's unfortunate," said
Blackhawks coach Brian Sutter. "We told him he was starting
just three hours before the game because Michael wasn't feeling
well. I thought he played well, but it didn't end well for us."
Underhill became the sixth goalie to start a game for the
Blackhawks this season, a club record. He played 27 games with
Florence of the ECHL and four with Manchester of the American
Hockey League.
Oilers defenseman Eric Brewer had the first two-goal game of his
six-year career, scoring on the power-play in the first period
and firing a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle past
Underhill 6:21 into the third period.
"It's great to get the two goals, but we just needed points and
this was a big one for us to get the extra point in overtime,"
Brewer said.
Edmonton improved to 28-27-11-2 and moved within four points of
Los Angeles and St. Louis for the eighth and playoff spot in the
Western Conference. The Oilers were last over .500 at 10-9-3
on November 26.
Tyler Arnason had two goals and an assist for the Blackhawks,
who are winless in their last six games (0-3-2-1).
Chicago's Eric Daze, who returned Friday after missing 63 games
following back surgery, tied the game at 3-3 with a dazzling
goal with 8:36 left in the third period. After taking a pass
from Jim Vandermeer, Daze spun to the right circle and fired a
shot past Tommy Salo as he fell to the ice. It was his second
goal in as many games.
Edmonton last won all four games over Chicago in a season series
in 1985-86.
