DENVER (Ticker) -- With three losses in their last four games,
the Colorado Avalanche relied on their top line to turn things
around.
Peter Forsberg recorded his seventh career hat trick, Alex
Tanguay collected four assists and Milan Hejduk added a goal and
two assists as the Avalanche routed the Edmonton Oilers, 6-1.
Coming off two straight losses, including one that saw Paul
Kariya land on injured reserve with a sprained wrist, the
Avalanche rode the coattails of the Forsberg-Tanguay-Hejduk unit
to their second home win in four tries.
"Peter and Milan played unbelievable, so it was a lot of fun,"
Tanguay said. "Hopefully, we can build on that and help the
team a little more than we did the first few games."
After a scoreless first period, Hejduk tallied 22 seconds into
the second to give Colorado the lead. Less than two minutes
later, Forsberg netted his 200th career goal for a two-goal
cushion.
"He played great tonight," Tanguay said of Forsberg. "It's a
lot of fun to play with him. He's probably the best player in
the league and he took us on his shoulders tonight."
Ethan Moreau halved the deficit for Edmonton 22 seconds later,
but defenseman Adam Foote and Forsberg scored later in the
period to give the Avalanche a 4-1 advantage.
Dan Hinote scored a shorthanded goal and Forsberg added a
power-play tally in the third to complete the scoring.
"I used to score a lot of goals and points against Edmonton,"
Forsberg said. "But the last couple of years, it's been hard to
come by because they're playing better. I think tonight the
puck was just bouncing around and I just got a couple of
rebounds."
David Aebischer made 33 saves, including 12 in the third period
and a breakaway stop on Moreau in the second.
"It was the biggest save I had to make today," he said. "It was
2-1 and a breakaway and 30 seconds later, we score."
"If I score on that breakaway, it's a different game," Moreau
said. "It's frustrating. That's all you need sometimes. It's
a funny game."
Ty Conklin stopped 11-of-13 shots before leaving with a groin
injury early in the second. Tommy Salo replaced him and allowed
four goals on 21 shots.
After Conklin stopped defenseman Martin Skoula's shot off a
2-on-1, Hejduk pounced on the rebound and put it past the
goaltender for his fourth goal. Just 93 seconds later, Forsberg
carried the puck from behind the net and made good on his third
attempt, giving Colorado a 2-0 lead.
"They've got some Hall-of-Famers over there that can put the
puck in the net," Edmonton's Ryan Smyth said. "Forsberg's one
of the best players in the world, he showed that tonight. It's
unfortunate it happened against us."
Moreau drew Edmonton within a goal at 2:17, but Fernando Pisani
cross-checked Joe Sakic into the goalpost 30 seconds later,
resulting in a five-minute penalty and Conklin's injury.
The Avalanched managed just one goal on the ensuing power play,
a one-timer by Foote off a feed from rookie defenseman
John-Michael Liles at 6:22.
With 37 seconds left in the period, Forsberg corraled a loose
puck in the right circle and lifted it over a fallen Salo for a
4-1 cushion.
As three Oilers skated toward Andrei Nikolishin behind the
Edmonton net, the Russian center passed to Hinote, who knocked
it past Salo at 4:44 of the third for a shorthanded goal.
"Our game wasn't totally flawed, but in those critical areas,
they dominated the puck, they dominated the possession and we
became spectators," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said.
Forsberg completed the scoring at 8:37, taking a feed from
Tanguay on the right side and caroming it off Salo's blocker.
"We just took care of our opportunities," Tanguay said. "The
puck went in for us and we had a few bounces go our way."
