NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Rangers took advantage of a
shaky Tommy Salo to enjoy something they have not had all season
- a laugher.

The Rangers reached Salo for five goals on just 15 shots over
the first two periods and snapped a three-game losing streak
with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Five different players scored against Salo, who was lifted after
40 minutes. Petr Nedved and Radek Dvorak tallied in the first
period and Mark Messier, Mikael Samuelsson and Rem Murray added
goals in the second.

The Rangers scored just 32 goals in their first 14 games.

"It was nice to break out offensively," said Messier, who leads
New York with seven goals, matching his total for all of last
season. "Your offense can really take a lot of pressure off
everything. It certainly can cover up mistakes you do make.
We've been playing some decent hockey but haven't been getting
the results."

Salo surrendered two goals between his pads and one over his
shoulder. He appeared unsteady after taking a shot by Murray, a
former Oiler, under his collarbone early in the second period.

"It shook him up, unquestionably," Edmonton coach Craig
MacTavish said. "He has a huge welt on his left shoulder and he
was in a lot of pain."

Mike Richter made 39 saves to improve to 11-1-4 lifetime against
the Oilers, who briefly acquired his rights in the offseason.

Edmonton had a chance to climb back into the game when Mike
Comrie scored a power-play goal to make it 3-1 with 6:16 left in
the second.

But the Rangers answered with a pair in the final 3:11 of the
period to put it out of reach.

"We came out strong tonight," said Dvorak, who also had a pair
of assists for his first multi-point game of the season. "We got
up 2-0 and even scored the third one. I think we came out
strong the last couple games, too, but couldn't score the third
one."

Samuelsson scored on a partial breakaway, sliding the puck
between Salo's pads to make it 4-1. With just two seconds left
in the period, Murray's slap shot from the top of the slot
deflected in off Salo's left arm.

"We got a solid contribution from everybody," Murray said. "We
challenged ourselves before the game to be better in all areas
of the game. I think we did a good job with the exception of
their power-play goal."

Jussi Markkanen stopped all eight shots he faced in the third
period for the Oilers and Todd Marchant capped the scoring with
4:13 remaining.

Salo could not be blamed on the Rangers' first two goals as
Nedved and Dvorak scored on one-timers off pretty feeds in the
first eight minutes.

"We were guilty of being loose in our own end to start the
game," MacTavish said. "Territorially, it was a pretty even
game. Coming out from the start of the game, we gave them too
much ice and committed some errors, and they capitalized on
their chances."

New York, which allowed a league-high 90 power plays entering
the contest, gave the Oilers a chance when Nedved and Ronald
Petrovicky took penalties with 9:03 left in the third.

Edmonton had a 5-on-3 for a full two minutes and kept the puck
in the Rangers' zone, but Richter made six saves during the
flurry.

"We took 41 shots last night and got one goal," MacTavish said.
"Forty one shots again tonight and we got two goals. We just
need guys on our team to put the puck in the net."

The Rangers got out of the period with their two-goal lead
intact and cashed in a power play early in the second to make it
3-0. Messier's wrist shot from the right circle went between
Salo's pads.

New York was 1-for-4 on the power play while Edmonton was
1-for-5.

Tom Poti, another former Oiler, recorded a pair of asissts for
the Rangers, tying Dallas' Sergei Zubov for the NHL lead in
scoring among defensemen with 13 points.
