Vermiculture is the raising of earthworms in a controlled environment to produce an organic material known as "worm castings" or "vermicastings."

Castings are made by placing a quantity of earthworms in a 100% organic peat moss bedding mixed with a non-chemical worm formula. This soil passes through the worms' digestive system and produces a rich natural fertilizer and soil enhancer.

Castings consist of slow release nutrients which contain more calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium than regular potting soils. Castings also contain a high percentage of humus and humic acid, an ingredient which provides binding sites for plant nutrients and aids in the prevention of harmful plant pathogens, fungi, nematodes and bacteria.

This product has excellent water retention capabilities, porosity, aeration and is non-burning. Earthworm castings will last up to six times longer than other potting soils which makes it a superior soil for greenhouse or house plants as well as a planting soil for trees, vegetables, shrubs and flowers.

Composting Worms

Ogopogo Worm Farm can provide red wiggler earthworms for your composting needs. Red wigglers, also known as redworms, are the best worm variety to use in your home vermicomposting system. These worms are fast producers and can adjust to a wide range of temperatures, acidity and moisture conditions. Red wigglers will turn your home and garden waste into a material known as vermicompost, a nutrient-rich fertilizer which can be used as a soil conditioner for household plants, gardens and lawns.
