One day in "The Gap"
and the Oldman River

On Sunday, February 19, 2006 I took a drive to the Oldman River through "The Gap" in southwestern Alberta. The day was sunny (although "breezy" as we say), so it was cool when I was out taking pictures.  I took a few mountain pictures but they were not what I liked--it just did not click for me.

However, the water in the Oldman River through the Gap was quite pretty, as was one section of the Oldman past the Gap.  Click here to see a map  of the Gap.

On the way into the Gap, I was lucky to see a small flock of mountain sheep grazing in a grassy hill. I took a few quick pictures before they trotted over the hill. About one hour later when I returned, they were on the crest of the hill. I assumed they would not let me walk up to them there, so I drove about 1 km around the hill on the Maycroft Road and parked at the border of the forestry reserve. I quietly climbed the hill in the general direction of where I figured they were and soon saw them grazing. I thought they would flee immediately as I was only about 30 meters away, but for a short while they were unconcerned about my intrusion. I was able to take pictures for nearly three minutes before they scattered. These are wild sheep and (although animals of this age are not hunted), I was surprised how cooperative they were.  Then, "poof" they fled.

Cheers!
