One day at the marsh

All of these pictures were taken on Sunday, May 14, 2006 at the ponds and marsh across the road from our house.  (The flying pelican was taken the day before.)

I have set up a casual blind and it seems to be working reasonably well. The mallards are spooky and won't come close. As spring evolves into summer I hope they become less wary of the blind.

All pictures were taken with the
Minolta 500-mm reflex lens mounted on the Konica Minolta 7D DSLR.

Male northern shoveler ducks (Anas clypeata)
The top specimen came in close and the original image is near full frame.  The two males in the second picture were in dispute over a nearby female.

White pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)
These images are reduced in size for the web, but all originals are near full frame, i.e. they were cropped only slightly. The bottom pelican was about 20 meters from my blind.

Ruddy duck (Oxyura jamaicensis)
This male was curious but would not get closer than about 30+ meters from my blind.  This image is cropped from the original and as a result is not tack sharp. These are perhaps my favorite duck ... along with cinnamon teal.

Male and female canvasback ducks (Aythya valisineria)

Yellow-headed blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus)
