Stream Watch in Southwestern Alberta, 2008

What is Stream Watch?
Stream Watch is a program funded by Alberta’s anglers and corporate sponsors that pays for Seasonal Enforcement Officers to patrol streams along the Eastern Slopes. The program employs students from the Lethbridge College conservation enforcement program.

The student Seasonal Enforcement Officers are funded by Stream Watch, but are hired by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) to work with local Fish and Wildlife officers. They are in uniform and are provided with a truck and a quad and are supervised by the area conservation officers.

In 2008, the Seasonal Enforcement Officer in Southwestern Alberta will work primarily in the upper Oldman and Livingstone River systems and carry out education programs, area patrols, enforcement, signage work and data gathering on streams.

The Alberta Stream Watch Conservation Coalition (Stream Watch) will try to hold offenders accountable for their actions through education, working with other stakeholder groups, increased enforcement and legislation

The Stream Watch Mission:
To preserve Alberta's eastern slope trout streams through educational programs that improve public and corporate-user awareness of the need for fishing regulations and the protection of riparian areas

History of Stream Watch

Alberta Stream Watch was started in 2002 by the Central Alberta Chapter of Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC). It was organized by members who were concerned about illegal fishing and about habitat damage caused by unregulated ATV use in trout streams. Support was received from Fish and Wildlife officers and local fisheries biologists.

Funds from the Central Alberta Chapter of TUC and from several generous resource companies were used to hire a student from the Lethbridge College Conservation Officer Program to do regular patrols on several streams in the area. Since then, the program has expanded and in 2007, five Seasonal Enforcement Officers were on patrol from Caroline to Grand Cache.

Plans for Stream Watch in Southwestern Alberta

  • To hire one summer Seasonal Enforcement Officers from college enforcement program.
  • To work with and support local SRD officials and other stakeholders in the protection of trout streams.
  • To promote the use of the Alberta Report a Poacher program by anglers and other users of the area.
  • To be advocates for the well-being of trout and trout streams and to increase angling opportunities for the benefit of all anglers.

Thanks to Stream Watch in Central Alberta and to SRD for the two pictures, above and below.

How much do we need?

The minimum required for one Seasonal Enforcement Officer is $25,000.

Our goal is to get 100 fishermen to commit donations of $100 per year for three years to help fund our Seasonal Enforcement Officer program. We are seeking support from corporations to become ongoing major sponsors.

How is the money handled?

Money raised for the Stream Watch program in Southwestern Alberta will be channeled through Trout Unlimited Canada and on to SRD to pay for the salaries, vehicles and expenses of the Seasonal Enforcement Officer. Tax receipts are issued by TUC.
