  • 09/02/10 - Long time CBC Television Vancouver audio department staff member Larry Watson died August 22 at age 79.   He was with CBC from 1965 until retirement.  A celebration of life for friends and family will be held at a future date.  Sun/Province obituary

  • 08/31/10 - The FCC has granted a construction permit to Venture Technologies Group to increase power of K24IC-D/24 (28.1/28.2) Bellingham from 7.5 kW to 15 kW.  It rebroadcasts KBTC-TV Tacoma.  FCC info
  • 08/30/10 - After 43 years in the business, Vancouver broadcaster Tom Jeffries is leaving radio.  His final Talk to the Experts program will air Saturday (09/04) at 2 p.m. on CKNW AM 980.   During his career, Tom has entertained at such notable stations as CFAX Victoria, CFUN and CKKS-FM Vancouver, CFRA Ottawa, CJCH Halifax and CFTR Toronto, and was morning host at 600 AM CKBD Vancouver from 2001-03.  He will be joining award winning television director Lawrence McDonald at Urban Media.
  • 08/30/10 - Update: Radio India KVRI AM 1600 Blaine owner Maninder Gill has been charged in the shooting of Surrey contractor Harjit Singh Atwal on Saturday.   He is due back in court Wednesday for a bail hearing.  Radio India studios are located across the border in Surrey.  Kim Bolan, Vancouver Sun  
  • 08/30/10 - Former KVOS-TV Bellingham anchor/reporter/weatherman Joe Bates was killed Saturday (08/28) when he fell from a ladder at his home and struck his head on the ground.  He was 60 and currently working as Whatcom County’s information and communications coordinator.  He worked at KNWR-FM (now KAFE) in Bellingham in the early 1970s and more recently hosted weekend shifts on Praise KWPZ-FM Lynden.  Isabelle Dills, The Bellingham Herald
  • 08/27/10 - Tribune Company has announced an increase of 44% in consolidated operating cash flow for the first seven months of this year compared to last.  Chapter 11 reorganization began in late 2008.  Tribune owns newspapers, a Chicago radio station and TV stations including Seattle market KCPQ-TV and KMYQ-TVRadio Ink  All Access Music Group
  • 08/26/10 - The FCC has granted a modification of construction permit to Educational Media Foundation to increase power of KLWA-FM 101.3 Westport from 1.2 kW non-directional at -6 meters HAAT to 5 kW non-directional at 49 meters HAAT at its current transmitter location.  FCC data
  • 08/25/10 - Former CFUN Vancouver general manager Ron Carabine died August 17 following a lengthy illness.  He was 86.  Carabine was at the helm of CFUN when it changed call letters to CKVN in 1969, following an ownership change the previous year.  There will be a private family funeral.  Sun/Province obituary
  • 08/24/10 - The CRTC has granted a short-term renewal for the Aboriginal Voices Radio licenses for a two year period, following its failure to comply with a minimum 25% local programming.  AVR indicated that it plans to build a studio in Vancouver this year and increase staffing levels.  It operates CKAV-FM-2 106.3 Vancouver, along with stations in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton.  CRTC decision
  • 08/20/10 - 1960's KJR Seattle jock Jimmy Darren climbed the radio ladder quickly to eventually own a number of stations in the southern U.S.  BlatherWatch
  • 08/19/10 - CKNW AM 980 Vancouver news reporter Nafeesa Karim is leaving the station to join CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV in mid September.   She was involved in the planning and execution of Olympic coverage and had been with 'NW since 2006.
  • 08/19/10 - Global National news anchor Kevin Newman will host his final newscast Friday evening.  He announced in April that he would be stepping down and making a career change.  He has been executive editor and anchor of the national suppertime newscast since 2001.  It was broadcast from the Global BC CHAN-TV Vancouver studios until 2008, when it was relocated to Ottawa.  It returns to Vancouver with new host Dawna Friesen next month.  Gayle MacDonald, The Globe and Mail
  • 08/19/10 - Reports have been received that Steve Parsons is out as program director at Vancouver market Rock 101 CFMI-FM 101.1 with CFOX-FM 99.3 PD Chris "Dunner" Duncombe assuming PD responsibility for both Corus stations.  Parsons had been with Rock 101 since 2005.
  • 08/17/10 - KRKO AM 1380 Everett replaced two of the four towers needed to broadcast its nighttime signal yesterday and today.  The 349 foot and 199 foot towers were destroyed by vandals last September.  Antenna testing is scheduled to begin in October.  Photos courtesy KRKO.  Meanwhile, investigators now say that the towers could have been destroyed by an upset neighbor rather than as a act of eco-terrorism.  KIRO-TV
  • 08/17/10 - Former KVI AM 570 Seattle morning host Kirby Wilbur has returned to local airwaves Mondays on KTTH AM 770 for a segment entitled Four O'clock Freedom Shot, which airs during the David Boze Show.  He was released from KVI last November.
  • 08/17/10 - The CRTC has approved an application by Hornby Community Radio Society to operate a very low power developmental community FM station on Hornby Island.  It will operate on 96.5 MHz with an ERP of 5 watts non-directional at 30 meters HAAT.  A similar application was approved in 2007, but wasn't implemented.  CRTC release
  • 08/16/10 - The Vancouver Giants have named Dan Elliott their new media relations director and play-by-play announcer on Vancouver market AM650 CISL.  He was formerly with Sports Page and is currently a fill-in sports anchor at Global BC CHAN-TV Vancouver.  Our Sports Central
  • 08/15/10 - From his beginings in radio at CKMO Vancouver in 1944, through a lengthy real estate career, and his CJOR radio shows now being rebroadcast on his website, Wilf Ray is still going strong at age 83.  Katherine Fawcett, REM Online
  • 08/14/10 - Two KRKO AM 1380 Everett transmission towers, which were toppled by vandals last September, will be re-installed on Monday, allowing the station to return to full power.  A $25,000 reward still stands for the capture of those responsible.  Alejandro Dominguez, HeraldNet
  • 08/14/10 - Canada’s Competition Bureau has ruled that the $2-billion purchase of Canwest Global Communications' broadcast arm by Shaw Communications will not substantially reduce or prevent competition in the sector.   The CRTC has set a September 20 hearing date for the deal which would give Shaw the Canwest OTA TV stations, such as Global Television (locally CHAN-TV Vancouver), as well as specialty channels.   Susan Taylor, Reuters   
  • 08/13/10 - Former CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV Vancouver news anchor Bridgitte Anderson, who served as B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell's press secretary since April 2008, has landed a new position as director of marketing and communications at Crofton House School.  Prior to CTV, she was the legislative reporter for CKWX and CKVU-TV Vancouver.  Alex Tsakumis
  • 08/11/10 - CBC-TV is airing Queen Elizabeth in 3-D, the first Canadian-shot and Canadian-produced 3-D program to be transmitted nationally (locally on CBUT Vancouver) on September 20 at 7 p.m.  It requires 3-D glasses, available from Canada Post outlets, but no special TV set.  CBC News   Broadcaster Magazine
  • 08/10/10 - A celebration of life has been announced for family and friends of former BCTV news anchor Robert Malcolm, who died at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster on August 4 at age 69.  It will be held at 1 p.m. August 12 at Meadowlands Golf and Country Club in Chilliwack.  Sun/Province obituary
  • 08/10/10 - Seattle-based Fisher Communications says it is no longer actively pursuing the sale of its five Great Falls, MT stations.  Fisher sold 24 Montana and eastern Washington stations to Cherry Creek Radio in 2006 for $33.3 million.  Inside Radio
  • 08/09/10 - Seattle-based Fisher Communications has reported its second quarter 2010 financial results with TV revenue up 37% compared to second quarter 2009.  Fisher release
  • 08/08/10 - British Columbia's top rated newscasts on Global BC CHAN-DT (channel 22, virtual 8.1) will begin in high definition next month.  Studios are currently under construction with dress rehearsals scheduled for the end of this month.
  • 08/07/10 - Freelance videographer Jud Morris has been arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property, including two $30,000 video cameras from Seattle market Q13 KCPQ-TV.   He was booked into Pierce County Jail and later released after posting bail.  Sara Jean Green, Seattle Times  Q13 News
  • 08/07/10 - KRIZ AM 1420 Renton is expected to return to the air shortly after recently losing its tower site.  According to FCC records, it will transmit from the same site as sister station KYIZ AM 1620FCC data   
  • 08/06/10 - CBC has filed a request to the CRTC to allow a temporary extension of analog television service in markets not slated for transition until after the August 31, 2011 deadline.  French language CBUFT/26 Vancouver is one of the stations included in the CRTC filing, requesting extension to August 31, 2012.  CBUFT will remain on channel 26 post-transition.  Canadian Business  CBC digital transition plan
  • 08/06/10 - Vancouver market BBM PPM has been released for the period April 26 to July 25.  News/Talk CKNW AM 980 continues its lead with a 13.5 share, AC CHQM-FM 103.5 is second with 9.0 and JACK CKLG-FM 96.9 is third with 7.8.  Daily average Cume numbers, expressed in thousands, put The Beat CFBT-FM 94.5 first with 367.8, CHQM-FM second with 366.8 and CKLG-FM third with 267.2.  BBM data
  • 08/06/10 - Former BCTV (now Global BC) CHAN-TV/8 Vancouver news anchor Robert Malcolm died Wednesday, August 4 following a heart attack.  Malcolm was a 30-year news veteran, anchoring for 19 years at BCTV from 1972-91 before being replaced following a ratings decline.  He was 69.  He had suffered a previous heart attack in the BCTV newsroom in the early 1990s.  He was most recently a realtor in the Cultus Lake area.  BC Radio History biographical notes
  • 08/05/10 - The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has concluded that two news reports which aired on CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV/32 Vancouver during its late evening newscast on May 7, 2009 did not contain any inaccurate, unfair or biased information.  A viewer had complained that the reports were inaccurate.  CBSC release
  • 08/03/10 - Snohomish County hearing examiner Barbara Dykes, who had been criticized by the development community for her rulings on planning and development issues, is leaving her position.  Her biggest decision was denying an application in 2008 by KRKO AM 1380 Everett to build radio towers outside Snohomish, citing health concerns for nearby residents.  The County Council overturned her ruling and a Superior Court judge backed the council's decision.  Noah Haglund, HeraldNet
