  • 01/26/12 - Long-time all-night radio host Jerry Landa died around 10 p.m. Wednesday (01/25) at the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver General Hospital following a lengthy illness.  He was 78.   He worked at a number of local stations from the 1960s to 80s, including CKDA Victoria, CFUN, CKLG, CJOR and CKWX Vancouver and CHUB Nanaimo.  redrobinson.com
  • 01/24/12 - Correction to the KWPX-TV Bellevue item (01/23) below, which should read:  The FCC has dismissed voluntary assignment of license for KWPX-TV Bellevue from Ion Media License Company, LLC to Urban Television LLC.
  • 01/24/12 - The FCC has granted voluntary assignment of license for KVOS-TV Bellingham from Newport Television LLC to OTA Broadcasting (Sea), LLC.  The sale was announced in early December with the price revealed as $2.9 million.  FCC decision  RBR backgrounder
  • 01/24/12 - The CRTC has approved an application by CBC to change its existing low-power CBC Radio One Vancouver transmitter CBXK AM 1240 Pemberton to FM.  The new transmitter will operate at 91.5 MHz with an ERP of 262 watts non-directional operating at -801.8 meters HAAT.  CBC indicated that the transition to FM is necessary because a mixed-use building was recently constructed near its AM station and the current tower owner intends to erect a self-supporting cellular tower nearby that would further decrease the signal’s quality.  CRTC decision
  • 01/24/12 - CBC management has told archivists to pare down CD and LP music collections across Canada by the end of March.  CBC Vancouver has an unusually large array of South American titles and other music from around the world, along with a large number of 78-rpm records and Edisons, which could all be part of the dismantling.  Guy Dixon, Globe and Mail
  • 01/23/12 - Ed Watson, the original Victoria bureau chief for VTV (now CTV British Columbia) when it launched in 1997, is returning as their new Vancouver Island bureau chief.  He moved to anchor the evening news at CHEK-TV Victoria from 2004-07 and served as assignment editor at CTV British Columbia from 2009-10.
  • 01/23/12 - A spokesperson for CTV Two CIVI-TV Victoria confirms that reporter Brett Mineer was released Thursday after only one month with the station.  Mineer was formerly a reporter for Vancouver market CKNW AM 980 before being released last August.  He was named the winner of the Jack Webster Foundation's Best News Reporting of the Year for 2011 for his coverage of the Whistler sled dog killings.
  • 01/23/12 - The FCC has granted voluntary assignment of license for KWPX-TV Bellevue from Ion Media License Company, LLC to Urban Television LLC.  Note correction (01/24) above.
  • 01/22/12 - A celebration of life has been announced for Michael Halloran, who died recently at age 59.  It is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, January 27 at the banquet facility of Larson Station restaurant at Gleneagles Golf Course, 6190 Marine Drive, West Vancouver.  During the 1990s, Halloran's marketing company directed the graphic and TV marketing for KISS-FM and the launch of News1130 Vancouver in 1996.
  • 01/22/12 - Shell Busey's HouseSmart, hosted by radio and television personality and home improvement expert Shell Busey is off the Vancouver market AM 650 CISL airwaves.  Shell tells NORTHWEST BROADCASTERS, "After three months on the air at CISL, I have to say....you can't make a talk radio show work on a non-talk radio station on Monday football night....so I resigned from trying."

  • 01/21/12 - B.C. legislative reporter Stephen Smart's marriage to Premier Christy Clark's deputy press secretary, Rebecca Scott, has been found to be in violation of the CBC's journalistic standards and practices by the Corporation's ombudsman Kirk LaPointe.  However, Johnny Michel, managing director for CBC's B.C. region, said CBC will not be taking any action in light of the review, as there is no evidence of an actual conflict of interest.  Andrea Woo, Vancouver Sun
  • 01/20/12 - Sunnylands Broadcasting and Jodesha Broadcasting have agreed to work together to maximize two frequencies, one currently owned by Jodesha, the other by Sunnylands.  Jodesha already has a CP to upgrade KANY-FM 93.7 Ocean Shores by moving it closer to Seattle and increasing ERP from 14 to 33 kW.   Sunnylands has applied to move a 98.5 MHz allotment from Ilwaco to Oakville.   The new entity will be called JOSH Broadcasting.  Radio-Info.com
  • 01/20/12 - The CRTC has denied an application by Matthew McBride to operate a new station at 89.1 MHz in Squamish.   The Commission cited continued economic uncertainty in the region and its previous approved of a mainstream commercial FM station to serve Whistler that has yet to launch.   CRTC decision
  • 01/20/12 - The FCC has granted a construction permit to Northwest Indy Radio to move KCFL-FM 91.3 Elma to 89.1 MHz, increase ERP from 100 to 255 watts non-directional, and move the transmitter about 10 miles closer to Elma at 46-57-31 123-35-18.  HAAT will increase from -72 to 94 meters.  FCC details
  • 01/19/12 - Broadcast engineer Clay Freinwald reports that many of the NWPR Stations were/are off air due to iced up antennas and/or satellite dishes full of snow and ice.  KCKA-TV at Crego Hill near Chehalis was off air along with co-located KSWS-FM 88.9 Chehalis.  Additionally, power is out at West Tiger and Cougar Mountains with stations running on generators.  West Tiger only has about 4 days supply of fuel, therefore road plowing through three to four feet of snow is being planned.
  • 01/19/12 - Seattle TV stations KOMO, KING and KIRO have pre-empted regular network programming from their main channels to provide continuous news, weather and traffic coverage during the current severe conditions.  KIRO has moved regular programming to channel 7.2.
  • 01/18/12 - Former CFUN Good Guy Brian Lord died at 1 a.m. (January 19 local time) in the Philippines.   He was 77.  Except for a short TV stint in Kamloops, he entertained at CFUN Vancouver from 1959-62 before moving to KMEN San Bernardino CA.  He returned to Canada in 1968 with positions at CJJC Langley, CKDA Victoria and CKWX/CKKS-FM and CHRX/CJJR-FM Vancouver before moving to Metro Broadcasting in Hong Kong in 1995.  He retired to the Philippines in 2001.  BC Radio History photos and bio
  • 01/18/12 - The FCC has granted an application by Pacific Lutheran University for a construction permit to change the frequency of its KPLU-FM translator, now K221FR, in West Seattle from 88.1 to 92.1 MHz and increase ERP to 250 watts directional.  The change was necessary due to the transmitter move and power increase recently granted to KWAO-FM 88.1 (formerly KLOP-FM) Ocean Park.  Waiver request  FCC info
  • 01/17/12 - Bob Robertson, who has announced Washington State football for 45 years, has been named 2012 winner of the Keith Jackson Award.  At age 82, he has called more that 500 games for the Cougars.  He will receive the award at the Seattle Sports Star of the Year banquet on January 25.  Bud Withers, Seattle Times
  • 01/17/12 - The CRTC has approved an application by UFV Campus and Community Radio Society to increase the maximum ERP of CIVL-FM 101.7 Abbotsford from 550 to 880 watts directional, decrease HAAT from 121 to 104 meters  and relocate its transmitter site approximately .5 km.  CRTC decision
  • 01/15/12 - Long-time Vancouver market CISL radio sales representative Les Nielsen died January 11.  He started with the station when it first went on air in 1980 and worked on radio shows with Red Robinson.  He was the nephew of actor/comedian Leslie Nielsen.   A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 21 at Delta Christian School, 4789 - 53 St., Delta.  Sun/Province obituary
  • 01/14/12 - Radio and television sports and news announcers' ears perk up at the announcement Wednesday by Shaw Media to start an all-news speciality channel for British Columbia.  Greg Douglas, Vancouver Sun
  • 01/13/12 - A celebration of life has been announced for well known meteorologist and radio weather reporter John Paschold, who died January 9 at age 90.  It will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 18 at South Delta Baptist Church, 1988 56th Street, Tsawwassen.  Sun/Province obituary
  • 01/12/12 - Seattle based Fisher Communications has announced the election of Peter E. Murphy to its board of directors filling the vacant seat formerly occupied by Roger Ogden, who resigned from the board last October.  Fisher release
  • 01/11/12 - Shaw Media has filed an application with the CRTC to operate an all-news network that would be broadcast as a speciality channel on cable and mobile phones as well as being streaming live online.  The company says it would feature a prime-time talk show hosted by Global BC CHAN-TV Vancouver news personality and senior reporter Jill Krop.   Steve Ladurantaye, Globe and Mail  Global News
  • 01/11/12 - Former Environment Canada meteorologist and weather reporter John Paschold died in Tsawwassen Monday, January 9 at age 90.   He reported weather for CJOR Vancouver in the 1970s and later for CBC Radio during the 1980s and '90s.
  • 01/11/12 - Jim Beatty, who served seven years as CTV's bureau chief at the B.C. legislature has been named the new anchor of CHEK News at CHEK-TV Victoria.  Times Colonist
  • 01/10/12 - Smart Talk KVI AM 570 Seattle PD Travis Box is leaving the station to become a stay-at-home dad effective January 13.  Current 1-3 p.m. host Scott Carty will assume the role of interim PD.  All Access Music Group
  • 01/10/12 - Long-time Q13 FOX KCPQ-TV Seattle morning anchor Lily Jang, who announced last November she is moving to Houston to be with family, has accepted a new job as morning anchor with for KHOU-TV Houston.  Her last day at Q13 is Friday, February 10.  John Allen Yeager, MCDM
  • 01/10/12 - "The Outlaw" Pat Garrett will host afternoon drive at KMPS-FM 94.1 Seattle.  For the past 13 years, he was the p.m. drive personality at KUBL-FM 93.3 Salt Lake City.
  • 01/09/12 - The FCC has granted voluntary assignment of license for KWDB AM 1110 Oak Harbor from Action Pages, LLC to Satnam Media Group Inc.  FCC info  The sale, for $35,000 cash, was announced in late November.  RBR.com
  • 01/06/12 - KMPS-FM 94.1 Seattle has released long time on-air host and music director Tony Thomas.  He had been with the station since 1989.  Also departing is programming assistant Marissa Dion.  Radio-Info.com   Country Aircheck
  • 01/05/12 - Tom and Thierry’s radio show Seattle Kitchen returns to the airwaves weekly on KIRO-FM 97.3 Saturday January 7.  Their previous show was dropped in early 2010 after a five-year run.  Tom Douglas release
  • 01/05/12 - KMAS AM 1030 Shelton moved to Newsradio Tuesday morning from its former Rock and Roll's Greatest Hits programming which had been in effect since August 2007.  New programming lineup is shown here.  KMAS also broadcasts on FM translator K281BM 104.1 Shelton.
  • 01/04/12 - Longtime Seattle radio personality Rob ‘T-Man’ Tepper teams up with former MLB pitcher/analyst and FOX Sports Radio personality Rob Dibble starting Monday, January 9.  FOX Sports Tonight airs weeknights from 7-10 p.m. on KRKO AM 1380 Everett.  Station General Manager, Andy Skotdal, states, “The T-Man is a huge addition to our lineup.  His name recognition in this market is high without even being on the air..."   Tepper is widely known for his radio work in Seattle, where he hosted mornings on KUBE-FM 93.3 for 14 years.  Radio Online
  • 01/04/12 - Former CBC staffer Steve Hook died in his 71st year in Sarnia, Ontario on December 27 after a long illness.  He worked for CBC Radio and TV as an announcer in Yellowknife and Edmonton and in program management in Prince Rupert and Vancouver.  His last position was in Vancouver as Manager of Radio Operations.  He left CBC in 1982 and moved back to Ontario.  Sarnia Observer obituary
  • 01/04/12 - Author, actor, composer, librettist and former CBC Vancouver music and drama producer Norman Newton died December 27 at age 82.  A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 7 at St. John's Shaughnessy Church, 1490 Nanton Ave., Vancouver.  ABC BookWorld bio and remembrance
  • 01/03/12 - Former KMPS-FM 94.1 Seattle PD Becky Brenner has joined the Seattle office of country radio consulting firm Albright and O'Malley as VP and consulting partner.  She had been with KMPS since 1982 before departing last summer.  A & O release
