all-night radio host Jerry Landa died around 10 p.m. Wednesday (01/25) at the Palliative
Care Unit at Vancouver General Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 78.
He worked at a number of local stations from the 1960s to 80s, including CKDA

granted voluntary assignment of license for KVOS-TV
Bellingham from Newport Television LLC to OTA Broadcasting (Sea), LLC. The sale was

- 01/24/12 - The CRTC has
approved an application by CBC to change its existing low-power CBC Radio One Vancouver transmitter CBXK AM 1240
Pemberton to FM. The new transmitter will operate at 91.5 MHz with an ERP of 262
watts non-directional operating at -801.8 meters HAAT. CBC indicated that the
transition to FM is necessary because a mixed-use building was recently constructed near
its AM station and the current tower owner intends to erect a self-supporting cellular
tower nearby that would further decrease the signals quality. CRTC decision

- 01/24/12 - CBC management
has told archivists to pare down CD and LP music collections across Canada by the end of
March. CBC Vancouver has an unusually large array of South American titles and other
music from around the world, along with a large number of 78-rpm records and Edisons,

- 01/23/12 - Ed Watson, the
original Victoria bureau chief for VTV (now CTV
British Columbia) when it launched in 1997, is returning as their new Vancouver
Island bureau chief. He moved to anchor the evening news at CHEK-TV Victoria from
2004-07 and served as assignment editor at CTV British Columbia from 2009-10.

- 01/23/12 - A spokesperson
for CTV Two CIVI-TV Victoria confirms
that reporter Brett Mineer
was released Thursday after only one month with the station. Mineer was formerly a
reporter for Vancouver market CKNW AM 980 before being released last August. He was
named the winner of the Jack
Webster Foundation's Best News Reporting of the Year for 2011 for his
coverage of the Whistler sled dog killings.

- 01/22/12 - A celebration of
life has been announced for Michael Halloran, who died recently at age 59. It is
scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, January 27 at the banquet facility of Larson Station
restaurant at Gleneagles Golf Course, 6190 Marine Drive, West Vancouver. During the
1990s, Halloran's marketing company directed the graphic and TV marketing for KISS-FM
and the launch of News1130 Vancouver in 1996.

- 01/21/12 - B.C. legislative
reporter Stephen Smart's marriage to Premier Christy Clark's deputy press secretary,
Rebecca Scott, has been found to be in violation of the CBC's journalistic standards and
practices by the Corporation's ombudsman Kirk LaPointe. However, Johnny Michel,
managing director for CBC's B.C. region, said CBC will not be taking any action in light

- 01/20/12 - Sunnylands
Broadcasting and Jodesha Broadcasting have agreed to
work together to maximize two frequencies, one currently owned by Jodesha, the other by
Sunnylands. Jodesha already has a CP to upgrade KANY-FM
93.7 Ocean Shores by moving it closer to Seattle and increasing ERP from 14 to 33 kW.
Sunnylands has applied to move a 98.5 MHz allotment from Ilwaco to Oakville.

- 01/20/12 - The CRTC has
denied an application by Matthew McBride to operate a new station at 89.1 MHz in Squamish.
The Commission cited continued economic uncertainty in the region and its previous
approved of a mainstream commercial FM station to serve Whistler that has yet to launch.

granted a construction permit to Northwest Indy Radio to move KCFL-FM 91.3 Elma to 89.1
MHz, increase ERP from 100 to 255 watts non-directional, and move the transmitter about 10
miles closer to Elma at 46-57-31

- 01/19/12 - Broadcast
engineer Clay Freinwald reports that many of the NWPR
Stations were/are off air due to iced up antennas and/or satellite dishes full of snow and
ice. KCKA-TV at Crego Hill near Chehalis was off air along
with co-located KSWS-FM 88.9 Chehalis. Additionally, power is out at West Tiger and
Cougar Mountains with stations running on generators. West Tiger only has about 4
days supply of fuel, therefore road plowing through three to four feet of snow is being
planned.

stations KOMO, KING
and KIRO have pre-empted regular network programming from
their main channels to provide continuous news, weather and traffic coverage during the
current severe conditions. KIRO has moved regular programming to channel 7.2.

Good Guy Brian Lord died at 1 a.m. (January 19 local time) in the Philippines.
He was 77. Except for a short TV stint in Kamloops, he entertained at CFUN Vancouver
from 1959-62 before moving to KMEN San Bernardino CA. He returned to Canada in 1968
with positions at CJJC Langley, CKDA Victoria and CKWX/CKKS-FM and CHRX/CJJR-FM Vancouver
before moving to Metro Broadcasting in Hong Kong in 1995. He retired to the

granted an application by Pacific Lutheran University for a construction permit to change
the frequency of its KPLU-FM translator, now K221FR, in

Environment Canada meteorologist and weather reporter John Paschold died in Tsawwassen
Monday, January 9 at age 90. He reported weather for CJOR Vancouver in the 1970s
and later for CBC Radio during the 1980s and '90s.

staffer Steve Hook died in his 71st year in Sarnia, Ontario on December 27 after a long
illness. He worked for CBC Radio and TV as an announcer in Yellowknife
and Edmonton and in program management in Prince Rupert and Vancouver. His
last position was in Vancouver as Manager of Radio Operations. He left CBC in 1982
