  • 03/09/10 - CBC Vancouver archivist Colin Preston will introduce a 90 minute presentation of Do Not Adjust Your Set: CBC Vancouver TV 1960 at the Vancity Theatre for two showings March 28.   The program includes the popular music series Meet Lorraine, The 7 O'Clock Show, Here and There, children's programming, and a news bulletin.   Vancity details

  • 03/08/10 - Former Vancouver market CKNW engineer Doug Court died in hospital March 5.  A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. March 19th at Forest Lawn Cemetary in Burnaby.  An official obituary is expected in the next few days.
  • 03/06/10 - Former CKLG North Vancouver and syndicated TV travel show host, Horst Koehler died March 2 at age 92.   He was appointed Member of the Order of Canada in 1980.  Vancouver Sun obituary
  • 03/05/10 - The FCC has now granted a low power FM station license to Dry Creek Community Broadcasting for KAPY-LP 95.5 Port Angeles.  It will operate non-directional with an ERP of 93 watts at -96 meters HAAT.  Transmitter testing has begun and official sign on will come within the next week.  FCC authorization
  • 03/04/10 - Citytv CKVU-DT Vancouver signed on yesterday.   The CRTC gave its authorization last week to operate on channel 47 with a maximum ERP of 8,300 watts at 670 metres HAAT from Mt. Seymour.
  • 03/02/10 - Seattle-based Fisher Communications, Inc. will report its fourth quarter 2009 and full year 2009 financial results before the market opens on March 11.  A quarterly conference call to discuss the results is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. that day.   Fisher release
  • 03/02/10 - Dylan Perry, program manager at CHLY-FM 101.7 Nanaimo, says community radio allows people to become part of the media they consume. Meanwhile, the Gabriola Radio Society still awaits a ruling from the CRTC to provide local service to the island.  Rachel Stern - Nanaimo News Bulletin
  • 02/27/10 - Jason Manning has confirmed that he is now in Victoria as PD of Rogers Radio stations The Ocean CIOC-FM 98.5 and JACK CHTT-FM 103.1.  He was most recently PD/p.m. drive at Rock 105.3 CKMH-FM Medicine Hat, AB.

  • 02/25/10 - The Truth KTTH AM 770 Seattle will begin airing Fox News Radio at the top of each hour beginning in May.  It will also add Gibson on Fox and Fox Business Reports.   Radio Online
  • 02/25/10 - The FCC has granted a minor modification of construction permit to Dry Creek Community Broadcasting for KAPY-LP 95.5 Port Angeles.  It will operate with 100 watts non-directional at minus 95.5 meters HAAT at 48-06-45 123-32-5.  It is expected to sign on shortly with a Traditional Country format and community supported programming.  FCC data 
  • 02/24/10 - Vancouver broadcaster Tom Mark is one of two to receive 2010 RTNDA Lifetime Achievement Awards in the British Columbia Region.  He was one of the architects of the all news format at News1130 CKWX Vancouver and currently anchors the Early Morning News with Tom Mark on CKNW AM 980.  The awards will be presented at the RTNDA BC Regional Awards Banquet in Vancouver on June 5Broadcaster Magazine
  • 02/23/10 - The FCC has granted a construction permit to Brian Butler for a new AM station at Yelm.  It will operate at 1120 kHz with 10 kW day/6 kW night from a three tower directional array at 46-53-46 122-31-32FCC data
  • 02/23/10 - The CRTC has amended the license for CKVU-TV/10 Vancouver in order to add a digital transmitter.  It will operate on channel 47 with a maximum ERP of 8,300 watts at 670 metres HAAT.  The new digital transmitter will be located on Mt. Seymour, whereas the analog one operates on Salt Spring Island.  CRTC decision
  • 02/21/10 - Writer, historian and former Vancouver broadcaster Chuck Davis has been compiling the history of Vancouver since the mid 1970s.  He has worked in radio and TV in Victoria, Prince Rupert and Vancouver, and helped NBC add local flavor to Olympics broadcasts.  Dan Rowe, Vancouver Sun
  • 02/19/10 - The Superior Court of Ontario has given the nod to Shaw Communications to take control of Canwest Global Communications.  Shaw revealed that its investment amounts to a minimum of $95-million in exchange for 20 per cent of the equity and an 80-per-cent voting interest in the restructured company.  A competing bid from private equity firm Catalyst Capital Group was set aside.  Globe and Mail  Vancouver Sun
  • 02/18/10 - The Canadian Association of Broadcasters is planning to shut down this June after reaching an impasse with some of its members.   Chairman Elmer Hildebrand says the CAB, which represents Canadian radio and television broadcasters, hopes to form a new organization in the future that solely represents radio broadcasters.  It was established by Canadian broadcasting pioneers in 1926.  Broadcaster Magazine  CCF history
  • 02/18/10 - The KOMO-TV Seattle analog antenna atop its tower has now been replaced with a new digital one.  Chief Engineer John Barrett says the signal will increase to a million watts and the tower will be the first to have specialized vertical polarization needed for handheld devices.  Crews will continue to climb the tower for the next few weeks with all work expected to be completed about March 1st.   KOMO video
  • 02/17/10 - KAPY-LP 95.5 Port Angeles will launch shortly with a Traditional Country format along with community supported programming.  FCC records show it will operate with 100 watts non-directional at -102.1 meters HAAT at 48-06-45 123-31-50.  There has been a corporation board change and amendment of name from Calvary Chapel of Port Angeles to Dry Creek Community Broadcasting.  The station will move to another frequency at a future time.
  • 02/16/10 - A pirate station operating at 91.5 from VIVO Media Arts in Vancouver for the last few days has been shut down by Industry Canada.  IC officers dressed in Olympics clothing advised the operators that they faced a significant daily fine if transmissions continued.  Kevin Murray, The Hook
  • 02/15/10 - Chris King, KJR AM 950 Seattle weekly high school sports reporter for the past five years, is returning to the Wenatchee AppleSox to work in sponsor sales, as communications director and the team’s radio voice on KPQ AM 560.  King has announced over 140 high school football, basketball, and volleyball games for Comcast Varsity Sports in Western Washington and Spokane over the last four years and was the AppleSox announcer during the 2008 season.
  • 02/12/10 - The CRTC has approved an application by Rogers Broadcasting to increase the maximum ERP of CHNM-DT/20 Vancouver from 1,354 to 8,300 watts.  HAAT increases from 615 to 670 meters.  CRTC release
  • 02/11/10 - Powell River Community Radio Society has applied to the CRTC to acquire the assets of CJMP-FM 90.1 Powell River from Powell River Model Community Project for Persons with Disabilities (PRMCP) for $5000.   CRTC info
  • 02/09/10 - Peter O'Connell heads up a team of 25 to provide a local angle to the Vancouver Olympics on KING-TV Seattle.  NBC expects to lose $200 million but station manager Pat Costello says KING will not lose money on the games.   Erik Lacitis, Seattle Times
  • 02/09/10 - UCFV Campus and Community Radio Society has applied to the CRTC for a third time limit extension to September 6, 2010 to get CIVL-FM Abbotsford on the air, due to a frequency exchange with the CBC.  CRTC info
  • 02/08/10 - The FCC has approved a community of license swap between KANY-FM 93.7 Ocean Shores and KSWW-FM 102.1 Elma.  The Commission moved a vacant allocation at Port Angeles to a new frequency to enable the moves.  FCC data: KSWW   KANY
  • 02/08/10 - Former KBSG personality Mark Christopher has resurfaced at the new Seattle market KMCQ-FM 104.5 Covington, with 104.5 KMCQ- All songs from the 60's and 70's imaging.  The station moved to its new transmitter location on Cougar Mountain last month following the frequency swap between KAFE-FM 104.1 Bellingham and CHHR-FM 104.3 Vancouver.   Applications to move KMCQ from The Dalles OR first became public back in 2004.
  • 02/06/10 - Former CHEK-TV Victoria GM Frank Bond died February 1.  He was 93.  A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 12th at Cedar Shores condominiums, 77 Gorge Road West.  Times Colonist obituary
  • 02/04/10 - Vancouver market CISL AM 650, teamed with Russia's Autoradio, will program music, and interviews with athletes, Olympic Committee members, locals, and international guests during the duration of the Games.  To meet content regulations, Canadian music will also be broadcast during the Russian airtime.  Station owner Astral Media estimates its Russian programming will serve about 60,000 people in Vancouver and millions more in Russia.  Susan Krashinsky, Globe and Mail
  • 02/03/10 - The broadcast schedule for CTV Olympic Games coverage on CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV/32 Vancouver beginning Friday, February 12 can be viewed here.  Much of CTV's regular network programming will be moving to A CIVI-TV/53/17 Victoria/Vancouver for the duration of the games.
  • 02/02/10 - Well known Vancouver photographer Franz Lindner died January 5 at age 90.  His work with the CBC spanned almost 20 years, covering studio productions such as Drop In, Front Page Challenge and the Irish Rovers at the original Georgia Street studios, to location work on series such as Littlest Hobo and Beachcombers.  A celebration of life is scheduled in May.  Sun/Province obituary
