BILL OMARA LEAVING KLKI
San Juan Communications (SJC), owner of KLKI 1340 AM, Anacortes, invites
listeners, fans and friends of Bill OMara to a celebratory BBQ at the
KLKI Studio located at 2416 Commercial Avenue, Anacortes on Tuesday,
July 31, 2007 from noon to 2 p.m. After watching and listening to Bills
final, live sportscast at KLKI, a BBQ will be held for friends and fans.
Bill OMara is a living legend and a consummate gentleman, stated
Robert Uteda, one of the stations new owners, we want our listeners,
Bills fans, and the community to know that we admire, respect, and are
grateful to his service not just to KLKI but the entire Puget Sound area
who have listened to his broadcasts for over 50 years.
In response to the recent Skagit Valley Herald article, which broke the
news of Bill OMaras departure on July 14, Jennifer Uteda, a long-time
Washington resident and graduate of Washington State University, said,
We were very pleased that the article went into great detail about
Bills past accomplishments, we of course were a bit troubled with how
we were portrayed as uncaring and heartless, since nothing could be
further from the truth. We look forward to our previously planned BBQ
for Bill on July 31, from 12 Noon to 2pm. We encourage our listeners to
stop by the station between now and July 31 to talk to Bill, Robert, and
myself and the rest of the 1340 AM staff. These same invitations, we
noted, were unfortunately omitted from the Skagit Valley Herald article.
Bill OMara originally thought about becoming an actor before turning to
the fledgling radio industry in the 1940s. He gained his legendary
status with KING-TV in Seattle as their first Sports Director and his
live broadcasts of the hydro races on Lake Washington. Bill was hired as
KLKIs Sports Director in 1985, he was 68 at the time. 1340 AM in
Anacortes will begin daily interviews and programs celebrating Bill
OMaras legacy beginning Monday, July 23, 2007.
