• 12/31/10 - An advance copy of the January 2011 edition of Clay's Corner, prepared by Clay Freinwald for the Seattle Chapter of the Society of Broadcast Engineers newsletter The Waveguide is offered here as a courtesy to our readers. 

• 12/30/10 - Vancouver broadcaster Tom Robinson died December 27.  He was 91.  He served with the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Victoria) during World War Two, landed in Normandy in 1944 and saw action through Northwest Europe until the war ended.  He joined CKWX in 1947, moving to CBC in 1950 as a staff announcer and was chief announcer from 1960 to 1967.  Robinson was the first on-camera TV newscaster in Vancouver when CBUT went on the air in 1953.  He retired from CBC in 1984.  He distinguished himself outside broadcasting as the chair of the Vancouver Remembrance Day Committee and was MC at the Victory Square ceremony every November 11th from 1962 to 2002.  His death marks the end of the "golden" era of a coterie of highly respected and recognizable CBC Radio and TV news announcers in Vancouver.

• 12/30/10 - Soft AC KRWM-FM 106.9 is first in the Arbitron December '10 Seattle-Tacoma PPM with a 7.7 share, All News KOMO AM 1000 is second with 4.9 and Classic Hits (changed to Oldies on Dec. 26) KJR-FM 95.7 is third with 4.8.  Radio Online

• 12/30/10 - CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV Vancouver news anchors Bill Good and Pamela Martin hosted their final program Wednesday evening.  The pair announced earlier this month that they were leaving the air after nearly a decade with the station.   Good continues with his weekday morning talk show on CKNW AM 980.  CTV news and video 

• 12/29/10 - BC broadcast icon Bill Hughes, renowned for his 15,000+ Roving Mike episodes from 1950-94 on Vancouver market CKNW, has made a significant contribution to the fundraising campaign for the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies in Penticton.  The $28-million facility will provide space for 820 students after it is completed in March, 2011.  Kelowna Capital News

• 12/28/10 - Former Vancouver broadcaster Michael Olstrom has confirmed that he has left his position as station group program manager for Saskatchewan-based Harvard Broadcasting, where he started as PD of its Regina stations in 1996, to join Astral as VP and GM in Regina.  He is a graduate of the BCIT broadcasting program and had worked at CJJC Langley and CFOX-FM, CKXY and CKKS Vancouver in positions ranging from on-air to music director and program director.

• 12/28/10 - A public memorial service will be convened at an undetermined time and place in January for Vancouver sports broadcast icon Paul Carson, who died December 21 at age 60.  Sun/Province obituary

• 12/28/10 - The FCC has granted a minor change in licensed facilities to Sequim Community Broadcasting for KSQM-FM 91.5 Sequim.  ERP will increase from 700 watts to 2.4 kW, with a HAAT increase from minus 84 to minus 76 meters and transmitter location change from 48-04-30 123-11-32 to 48-05-1 123-15-57.  FCC data  Additionally, the Commission has dismissed an application for a modification of CP by Grays Harbor LP FM for a transmitter pattern change for KBSG-FM 90.3 Grays Harbor.  FCC data

• 12/27/10 - KWJZ-FM 98.9 Seattle has dropped its smooth jazz format in favor of Click 98.9 Modern Music.  A notice from PD Carol Handley on the station's (former) website says, "Technologies change and the new radio audience measurement is not favoring our once 'ratings-strong' Smooth Jazz music format.  I encourage you to continue to support the artists who make the music and the venues who bring them to the Northwest."  The new format targets males and females 25-39 with "the 'Seattle Sound' of popular music styles", and is playing 10,000 songs in a row.  KWJZ notice   All Access Music Group

• 12/27/10 - According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Seattle-based Fisher Communications EVP/CFO Joseph Lovejoy will leave the company as of December 31, but continue to provide business-planning services during 2011.  Lovejoy has been with Fisher since 2004.   VP/Finance Hassan Natha will replace Lovejoy and will become VP/CFO, effective January 1.  Radio Ink  Radio Online  SEC filing

• 12/26/10 - After six weeks as Seattle's Holiday Music Station, KJR-FM 95.7 has moved from its previous greatest hits format to Oldies 95.7.

• 12/24/10 - Canadian scientist Reginald Fessenden played violin and sang, read bible verses from Luke and played a phonograph record from a station he'd built at Brant Rock on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, in what's believed to the first broadcast of the human voice on Christmas Eve 1906.  However, it wasn't until Christmas Eve 1921 when one of the earliest memorable broadcasts in the Pacific Northwest took place.  Feliks Banel, Seattle PI 

• 12/23/10 - KING-TV Seattle has won an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for investigative reports on millions of dollars wasted by Washington State Ferries.  The Waste on the Water series featured the work of investigative reporter Susannah Frame, photojournalists Steve Douglas and Doug Burgess and Executive Producer Kellie Cheadle.  It's the fourth time in the past 25 years that KING-TV has received one of the awards.  Jack Broom, Seattle Times  KING-TV news

• 12/23/10 - A Chuck Davis Book Fund In Trust has been set up through the Vancity Credit Union under account number 173575, Branch #30.  Donations can be made through any Vancity branch in the Lower Mainland.  Money raised will go to Howard White of Harbour Publishing to hire and pay writers to finish compiling the last 16 years of Davis' last book on Metro Vancouver.  It was his final wish to have his book finished.  It will likely go to press next summer and be in the fall lineup (2011) for Harbour Publishing.  Crawford Kilian has created a blog for Chuck to keep everyone updated on the progress of the book.  Vancouver historian, author and broadcaster Chuck Davis died November 20 in Surrey at age 75.

• 12/23/10 - Vancouver sports broadcast icon Paul Carson, who died Tuesday, assembled an extensive list of talent on Sports Page.  Tony Gallagher, The Province

• 12/23/10 - The Washington Stealth of the National Lacrosse League has announced plans to partner with Fox Sports KRKO AM 1380 Everett to air a weekly Stealth radio program beginning January 6.  HeraldNet

• 12/23/10 - Classical KING-FM 98.1 Seattle broadcasts Christmas classics with a Northwest touch over the holiday.  Seattle Times  KING-FM info

• 12/22/10 - The Wolf KKWF-FM 100.7 Seattle morning host Fitz along with Eddie King from the Fitz in the Morning show, have been named semi-finalists in the Live! with Regis & Kelly Men of Radio contest.  All Access Music Group

• 12/22/10 - KEXP-FM 90.3 Seattle and former THE end KNDD-FM 107.7 DJ Marco Collins joins legendary KJR jock Pat O'Day as the city's two representatives when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rolls out an update to its interactive radio exhibit next year.   Chris Kornelis, Seattle Weekly

• 12/22/10 - Veteran Vancouver sports broadcaster Paul Carson died Tuesday evening in North Vancouver following an 11-month battle with pancreatic cancer.  He was 60.  Carson brought all-sports radio to Vancouver, which was launched as Team 1040 in 2001.  Most of his career was in sports hosting and reporting along with the founding of Sportspage on local television.  A memorial is planned for the coming months.  Team Radio release

• 12/22/10 - Program director Jay Kelly has been released from his position at KJR-FM 95.7 Seattle.  He moved to KJR in February 2005 after two stints with oldies KBSG-FM 97.3.  Bill Virgin, Seattle P-I 2005 backgrounder

• 12/21/10 - Bruce Cannon, former PD and p.m. drive host at KTAC Tacoma in the '70s and 80s, died Monday following a heart attack near his home in Manson, WA.  He had been entertaining at KOZI-FM 93.5/AM 1230 Chelan since 2008.  The station is planning a tribute at 10 a.m. Wednesday.  KOZI news  KOZI photo gallery

• 12/21/10 - Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) steered the unanimous Senate passage of the Local Community Radio Act, which will allow LPFM stations to obtain broadcast licenses in communities of all sizes.   Currently, FCC technical rules limit the number of low power FM stations that can practically be licensed in urban and suburban areas.  The Act changes the rules, allowing for more LPFM stations to be licensed nationwide, but doing so in a manner that addresses the interference concerns of full-service FM radio stations.  All Access Music Group

• 12/21/10 - The FCC has granted a voluntary assignment of license from Premier Broadcasters Inc. to Olympia Broadcasters Inc. for KRXY-FM 94.5 Shelton.  FCC info

• 12/20/10 - Vancouver talk show host Christy Clark leads her rivals in the B.C. Liberal leadership race in most polls, but doesn't have the support of Liberal MLAs.  Doug Ward, Vancouver Sun

• 12/20/10 - The purchase price for five stations in Astoria, OR and Anchorage, AK being sold off to Ohana Media Group, formed by Seattle-based New Northwest Broadcasters CEO Trila Bumstead, is $465,000 according to FCC filings.  New Northwest's Fairbanks, AK cluster is being sold to Anchor Radio for $1.625 million.  All Access Music Group  Radio Online

• 12/17/10 - KING-TV Seattle consumer advocate Jesse Jones is taking a leave of absence until February to undergo immunotherapy for cancer that has spread to his lungs from his kidneys.  His doctors are optimistic the treatments will be successful.  Jill Kimball, Seattle Times  KING 5 News

• 12/17/10 - Comedian and radio personality Jubal Flagg joins to co-host a.m. drive at Seattle market MOViN KQMV-FM 92.5, over from KISS KBKS-FM 106.1, where he has been heard in morning drive for the last 6-1/2 years.   Brooke and Jubal in the morning will debut in the new year.  Also on board is Justin Barnes for nights.  He hosted p.m. drive for the last 3 years at KFNK-FM 104.9, which recently flipped to GenX.   All Access Music Group

• 12/16/10 - Funding needs to come for a new studio for KEXP-FM 90.3 at Seattle Center.  Station officials envision transforming the Center meeting rooms with glass walls to give people outside a clear view of DJs and artists performing there.  KEXP info  Emily Heffter, Seattle Times

• 12/16/10 - CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV Vancouver has announced its new weather anchor, meteorologist Michael Kuss is joining the team of Mike Killeen and Tamara Taggart on CTV News at Six starting Monday, January 3rd.  He is originally from Saanich on Vancouver Island, but has worked for most of the major networks in Canada including The Weather Network and most recently Citytv in Toronto.  CTV news

• 12/14/10 - CBC Radio CBCV-FM 90.5 Victoria station manager Peter Hutchinson says if you add the people in the city listening to Vancouver-based CBC Radio and CBC Radio 2, the corporation can boast a share over 25 per cent.  Andrew Duffy, Times Colonist

• 12/11/10 - Former CBC Vancouver sound technician Dave Curle died November 15 following a lengthy battle with liver disease.  He was 58.  He was involved in the long-running TV series The Beachcombers on CBC-TV.  During his career he worked for the Provincial Media Educations Centre, the Open Learning Agency, the Knowledge Network and operated his own company, 1 Dog Productions.  Dave Curle Remembered  Facebook Memorial

• 12/11/10 - Joetv KJZO-TV Seattle has started running a tower cam feed on its virtual channel 22.3.  It plans to add Tribune's new classic TV channel Antenna TV beginning January 1.  Paige Albiniak, Broadcasting & Cable

• 12/11/10 - The Celebration of Life for Dave Niehaus will take place today at Safeco Field.  Gates open at noon with the ceremony beginning at 1:10 p.m.  The voice of the Seattle Mariners died November 10 at age 75.  The ceremony will be carried on 710 ESPN KIRO AM and KOMO-TV Seattle.  710 ESPN  Ray Marcham, KOMO-TV

• 12/10/10 - KBTC-TV Tacoma has begun broadcasting the Washington State Public Affairs TV Network (TVW) on virtual channel 28.3 (15.3 in Centralia).  Operating since 1995, this is the first time TVW is being broadcast over the air.  KBTC release

• 12/10/10 - Ohana Media Group, formed by Seattle-based New Northwest Broadcasters CEO Trila Bumstead, is seeking to purchase five NNB stations in Astoria, OR and four in Anchorage, AK.  NNB went into voluntary receivership in May, and its properties are being sold off.  Radio Ink

• 12/09/10 - The CRTC has received applications to swap the frequencies of Jim Pattison Broadcast Group owned CKPK-FM 100.5 Vancouver with that of Vancouver Co-operative Radio CFRO-FM 102.7.  The rationale is that CKPK-FM would get the much better frequency of 102.7 with a boost in maximum ERP to 100,000 watts and Co-Op Radio would get technical, financial and marketing support in the amount of $1,437,000 over a period of 5 years.  CRTC info

• 12/09/10 - Vancouver market BBM PPM has been released for the period August 30 to November 28.  News/Talk CKNW AM 980 continues its lead with a 12.0 share, The Beat CFBT-FM 94.5 is second with 9.3 and CBC Radio One CBU AM 690/CBU-FM 88.1 is third with 9.0.  Daily average Cume numbers, expressed in thousands, put The Beat CFBT-FM 94.5 first with 393.6, QM-FM CHQM-FM 103.5 second with 336.6 and Virgin Radio CKZZ-FM 95.3 third with 284.7.  BBM data

• 12/08/10 - The Bro Jake Show a.m. drive co-host/sidekick Martin Strong has been released from Vancouver market Rock101 CFMI-FM 101.1.  The station has hired Mike Reno, musician, drummer, and lead singer of the rock band Loverboy as a replacement effective January 4.  Loverboy was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

• 12/08/10 - Vancouver market CKNW AM 980 talk show host and former deputy premier Christy Clark has announced she is is running for the leadership of the B.C. Liberal Party.  She has been out of politics for over four years.  Doug Ward, Vancouver Sun  Ian Austin, The Province  'NW has announced that Vancouver Province columnist and Christy Clark Show fill-in host Michael Smyth (it's called The Mike Smith Show) has taken over her program effective immediately.

• 12/08/10 - CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV Vancouver has announced that Mike Killeen and weathercaster Tamara Taggart will begin anchoring CTV News at Six on Monday, January 3rd.  Both are BCIT Communications graduates and are familiar faces to local viewers.  A final new member of the news team will be announced in the coming days.  CTV News  Vancouver Sun

• 12/07/10 - After nearly a decade as anchors of the suppertime news at CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV Vancouver, Bill Good and Pamela Martin are stepping down.  Good will focus exclusively on his radio show, while Martin will continue with community and charity fundraising work.  They will leave at the end of the year.  Ethan Faber, CTV news  Doug Ward, Vancouver Sun  The Province

• 12/07/10 - Former Entercom Seattle market manager Jerry McKenna has been named SVP/Market Manager for its Las Vegas cluster.  All Access Music Group  Another shuffle in the lineup at Talk KTTH AM 770 Seattle with Compass Media Networks's Lars Larson moving earlier to 10 p.m.-1 a.m. followed by Laura Ingraham 1-4 a.m. effective January 3.  All Access   MoVo Productions' Mo Bounce re-ups as the station voice for KISS KBKS-FM 106.1 Seattle.  All Access

• 12/07/10 - KING-FM 98.1 Seattle has named Mercedes Sanchez as the station's inaugural membership director.  Sanchez will be responsible for launching the station's development department, as well as planning and implementing its annual fundraising campaign.  Seattle Times

• 12/04/10 - One of the factors in the decision by the BC Lions to re-up for four years with Team CFTE AM 1410 was all-day promotion on sister sports station CKST AM 1040.   Greg Douglas, Vancouver Sun

• 12/04/10 - Add another All Christmas station to the list as The Ocean CIOC-FM 98.5 Victoria made the change early yesterday morning.

• 12/03/10 - The FCC has granted a construction permit to KSER Foundation for a new station in Freeland on South Whidbey Island.  It will operate on 89.9 MHz with an ERP of 1.8 kW directional at 165 meters HAAT at 48-03-40 122-34-19.  FCC info  The Commission dismissed an application by the Friends of KEXP for a new station on the same frequency at nearby Clinton.

• 12/03/10 - The 13th annual Jingle Bell Bash, produced by KISS KBKS-FM 106.1 and Deck the Hall Ball, which has been around since 1993, organized by The End KNDD-FM 107.7, run this week at the WaMu Theater.  Jonathan Zwickel, Seattle Times  Some of Puget Sound’s most popular radio stations and music venues will hold their annual holiday pre-funk in the next few days.  Ernest A. • 12/02/10 - CHR KBKS-FM 106.1 ties Soft AC KRWM-FM 106.9 for first place in the Arbitron November '10 Seattle-Tacoma PPM with 5.1 shares, with News/Talk KIRO-FM 97.3 tied for third with Rhythmic CHR KUBE-FM 93.3 with 4.4 shares.  Radio Online

• 12/02/10 - Dave Newbury, CBC Senior Manager, Transmission Operations, Western Canada, based in Vancouver retired at the end of November.  He joined CBC 43 years ago as a transmitter technician.

• 12/02/10 - KTTH AM 770 Seattle adds Premiere Networks' syndicated Sean Hannity effective January 3, from 4-7 p.m.  Premiere release

• 12/02/10 - KRSC-TV brought television to the northwest for the first time in November 1948, to perhaps 500 expensive black and white TV sets.  It became KING-TV the following year.   Casey McNerthney, Seattle P-I archive

• 12/02/10 - Greenwich CT-based Townsquare Media has announced it is acquiring 12 radio stations currently owned by Seattle-based New Northwest Broadcasters in the Tri-Cities and Yakima markets.  The deal, subject to FCC approval, is expected to close in the first half of 2011.  Townsquare release 

• 12/02/10 - KVI AM 570 Seattle, which moved to oldies last month, pioneered the all-conservative talk format now used by hundreds of other radio stations.   John Carlson, The Weekly Standard

• 12/02/10 - News/talk CFAX AM 1070 continues to lead in the Victoria market BBM 12+ Fall 2010 ratings with a 13.4 share, CBC Radio CBCV-FM 90.5 is second with 12.5 and Hot AC/CHR KOOL-FM CHBE-FM 107.3 is third with 11.6.  BBM info

• 12/01/10 - KING-FM 98.1 Seattle has expanded its board as part of its transition from being a commercial radio station to being a listener-supported organization.  The classical-music radio station's shift to public-supported status was announced in March and is expected to be complete by July 2011.  Michael Upchurch, Seattle Times

• 12/01/10 - Fybush Media, run by lifelong broadcasting nerd Scott Fybush, publishes an annual national radio tower calendar.   The 2011 calendar for the month of November features a photo of the towers on Cougar Mountain taken from nearby Tiger Mountain.  Curtis Cartier, Seattle Weekly

• 12/01/10 - The BC Lions Football Club has extended its radio broadcast agreement with TEAM CFTE AM 1410 Vancouver for another four years.  The announcement was made this morning by club president and CEO Dennis Skulsky.  TEAM owner CHUM Radio has been the official broadcaster of the Lions for the past seven years.   BC Lions release

• 11/30/10 - Roy Hennessy, chairman of Shore 104 CHHR-FM 104.3 Vancouver, has moved back to Toronto, where he is a partner in Hennessy and Bray Communications.  He remains chairman of Shore Media.  Also moving to Toronto to join Astral Media is former Rock 101 CFMI-FM 101.1 Vancouver PD Steve Parsons.  He has left his position as programming consultant at Shore 104.

• 11/30/10 - Global Television BC Region VP and GM Brett Manlove was released yesterday by Shaw Media, as the company announced organizational changes and a shift in the role of station managers.  He joined Global (then BCTV) CHAN-TV Vancouver as an Account Executive in 1984, progressing through various sales management positions, up to Senior Vice President of Television Sales for all of Canwest, based in Toronto.  In January 2008 he returned to Vancouver as VP and GM of BC Region.

• 11/29/10 - Veteran News1130 CKWX Vancouver traffic anchor Bruce Williams has returned to the air following colon cancer surgery two months ago.  He previously handled afternoons, but returned this evening.

• 11/28/10 - An obituary has been published for Vancouver historian, author and broadcaster Chuck Davis, who died November 20 in Surrey at age 75.   Sun/Province obituary

• 11/28/10 - Rimshot Seattle market KFNK-FM 104.9 Eatonville, which moved November 10 from The Funky Monkey to '90s-based Gen X 104.9 has changed call letters to KSGX-FM.  FCC info

• 11/27/10 - Comcast Cable in western Washington has restored KVOS-TV Bellingham to channel 72.  KVOS now reaches audiences in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and some areas of southwest Washington that are part of the Seattle DMA.  It was removed from most Seattle-area cable TV systems in 1990 due to conflicts surrounding "syndicated exclusivity".  1990 Seattle Times backgrounder

• 11/27/10 - JACK fm CKLG-FM 96.9 Vancouver morning man Larry Hennessey teams up with Jamie Anstey to form Regenerator Records to release lost classics from the 1960s.   John Mackie, Vancouver Sun

• 11/27/10 - A "shy" Dawna Friesen, formerly with NBC and now Vancouver-based Global National news anchor, is shocked to see herself on posters and billboards in a major ad campaign.  John Doyle, Globe and Mail

• 11/27/10 - Vancouver market CKNW AM 980 talk show host Christy Clark takes next week off to contemplate whether she will enter the leadership race for the provincial B.C. Liberal Party.  Doug Ward, Vancouver Sun

• 11/26/10 - KPST-TV Seattle, which operates on channel 44, has changed call letters to KFFV-TV.   Programming remains the same with infomercials on 44.1, TV Azteca on 44.2 and AAT Television on 44.3.  Dr. Kenneth Casey, majority owner and CEO of North Pacific International Television, which operates the station, died September 12 in New Mexico at age 70.

• 11/26/20 - The snow and wind early this week did considerable damage in the Bremerton area.  Seattle market KTBW-TV, which broadcasts from Gold Mountain west of the city, regained power yesterday morning but programming wasn't restored until today.  Also affected was Q13 FOX KCPQ-TV, which remained on air using standby power.  Seattle Times

• 11/26/10 - Tara Nelson, former CHEK-TV Victoria and Global National reporter/anchor at Global TV BC CHAN-TV Vancouver, starts Monday as the new anchor of CTV News at Six on CTV Calgary.  She most recently worked in London as the European Bureau Chief for Global National.  CTV release

• 11/26/10 - Praise KWPZ-FM 106.5 Lynden made the move to all-Christmas at midnight this morning, joining three Seattle and two Vancouver stations.

• 11/25/10 - Long-time KMPS-FM 94.1 Seattle morning host Ichabod Caine and his former co-host/producer wife Scallops have launched Internet station Wild Boar Radio.  Caine began his broadcasting career in the mid-’70s at KPUG Bellingham, later moving to KJRB Spokane, then KJR Seattle before joining KMPS in 1983.  He left KMPS in December 2009.   The new station features Best Of All Radio or BOAR, a country-leaning eclectic mix.  Radio Info backgrounder

• 11/24/10 - CBC British Columbia is holding its Open House and Food Bank Day 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, December 3 at its Broadcast Centre in downtown Vancouver.  There will be newsroom tours, live broadcasts in studio 700, people can try their hand at being an anchor - reading the news from a teleprompter, experimenting with the green screen on the weather set and there will be meet and greets with all the local personalities as well as special appearances by Peter Mansbridge, George Stroumboulopoulos, Jian Ghomeshi and Jim Treliving of Dragons Den.  CBC info

• 11/24/10 - Jack the Ripper digitizes music at University of British Columbia campus station CITR-FM 101.9.  Cheryl Rossi, Vancouver Courier

• 11/23/10 - Cold, snowy and windy weather overnight appears to have taken its toll on a number of northwest TV stations and translators.   Among stations off the air for various periods of time were Orcas Island transmitters KBCB-TV and K24IC-D (KBTC-TV Tacoma translator) Bellingham, along with Gold Mountain transmitter KTBW-TV Tacoma and K26IC-D (KIRO-TV Seattle translator) Bremerton (near Silverdale).

• 11/23/10 - The CRTC has granted a short term license renewal for Vancouver market CKNW AM 980, to expire August 31, 2014.  The Commission is reviewing the eligibility of a Canadian content development (CCD) contribution made during the 2008-09 broadcast year.  CRTC decision

• 11/20/10 - Renowned Vancouver historian, author and broadcaster Chuck Davis died early this morning in Surrey, three days after his 75th birthday.  He started his broadcast career at CAE (Canadian Army Europe) in Werl, West Germany in 1956.  He worked at a number of Ontario and British Columbia radio and TV stations from the 1950s to the '70s as well as producing 15 books on local history.  He began compiling The History of Metropolitan Vancouver in 2003, which he announced last month would be completed by fellow author Charles Campbell.   He announced in September that he was dying from lung cancer.  The family is planning a celebration of life in about two months.  Tiffany Crawford, Vancouver Sun  Damian Inwood, The Province  Sonia Aslam, News1130   September CTV background video  Mike Cleaver August interview

• 11/15/10 - Prairies broadcaster Ray Torgrud, who worked for a short time in news at CFUN Vancouver in 1960, died November 6 in Winnipeg.  He was 80.  He began his broadcast career in radio in Red Deer, AB before moving on to television in Calgary, Red Deer and Winnipeg.  He retired in 1992.  Veteran Vancouver radio musicologist Dave McCormick recalls Ray voicing a reverb-processed "A C-FUN Flashback", used by the station to introduce "older" hits.  Passages obituary

• 10/22/10 - The CRTC has approved the acquisition of TV assets of CanWest Global Communications Corp. by Shaw Communications Inc.   The deal gives Shaw ownership over the Global television network, including its local flagship CHAN-TV Vancouver, and a host of specialty channels.  The Commission accepted Shaw's proposal to spend $180.1 million over the next seven years to support the transition to digital television by converting 67 analog transmitters in smaller markets to digital, provide and install a satellite receiver and dish, at no charge, to viewers who lose access to over-the-air signals of their local or regional television stations as of August 31, 2011, as well as free satellite access to those signals, along with a number of other concessions.  CRTC decision  Shaw release

• 10/22/10 - Vancouver market CISL AM 650 veteran broadcaster Big Daddy Dave McCormick has left the station after two years of voice tracking.  Dave has been in the business for over 50 years, having moved to CFUN Vancouver from Hamilton ON in 1957.  He also entertained at a number of stations in the US during the 1960s, including a stint at KOL Seattle 1966-67.

• 10/22/10 - News1130 CKWX AM Vancouver retired/part time newscaster Brian Brenn is back at home following a pulmonary embolism attack last week.  He will be a hospital out-patient for a few weeks as doctors stabilize his blood levels.

• 10/20/10 - Veteran Vancouver newscaster Brian Brenn is being treated with blood thinners in Peace Arch Hospital after suffering his second pulmonary embolism last Thursday.  He has been filling in at News1130 CKWX Vancouver since his retirement in 2008.  He was to have flown to Ottawa last Friday to help kickoff 1310News CIWW AM.  The attack would likely have been fatal, if it had taken place during the flight.

• 10/06/10 - KUOW-FM 94.9 Seattle re-lives the record windstorm to hit the Pacific Northwest and coastal British Columbia in October 1962.   The Columbus Day Storm, aka Typhoon Freda knocked virtually all radio and TV stations off the air, some for days, as it made its way up the coast.  One of the few to continue broadcasting north of the California border was suburban Vancouver's CKNW AM 980.  Engineer Jack Gordon had prepared emergency power and all-night fill-in announcer Gerry Gawne (later of KING Radio Seattle) anchored the overnight program.  Feliks Banel, KUOW

• 10/04/10 - Former KOL Seattle staff announcer Art Gilmore, who went on to introduce television shows and narrate countless movie trailers, died September 25 in Irvine, CA.  He was 98.  Gilmore was born in Tacoma and attended Washington State University, where he worked at the campus radio station before joining KOL in 1935.  He moved to Los Angeles in the '30s and became a staff announcer at KFWB and later KNX.  Bruce Weber, New York Times  LA Times obituary

• 10/01/10 - FEMA has announced the adoption of a new digital message format for the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), the next generation emergency alert and warning network.  The goal of IPAWS is to expand upon the traditional Emergency Alert System by allowing emergency management officials to reach as many people as possible over as many communications devices as possible, such as radio, television, mobile phones, personal computers and other communications devices.  The current Emergency Alert System relies largely on radio and television to communicate to people.  Television Broadcast

• 09/29/10 - KVOS-TV Bellingham has been dark for the last couple of days.  A note on the station's website states, "KVOS Channel 12 is currently off the air.  Our technical staff is working to restore the transmission as soon as possible.  All broadcast, and some cable and satellite viewers are affected by this outage.  Updates will be posted here as additional information becomes available."  Update: KVOS returned to the air this afternoon.

• 09/29/10 - News1130 CKWX AM Vancouver is reporting that it is hearing from listeners east of the city complaining about interference from KPWX AM 1130 Mount Angel OR (approx. 25 miles south of Portland).  FCC records show KPWX as operating with a directional pattern to the southwest which should fully protect CKWX.  However, the FCC granted a special temporary authority for KPWX to operate with a non-directional antenna at 6.25 kW during non-critical hours only, for the purpose of taking field strength measurements pending an application to increase daytime power to 50 kW.  The STA, which expires September 30, states, "It will be necessary to reduce power or cease operation if complaints of interference are received." • 09/23/10 - Radio India KVRI AM 1600 Blaine managing director Maninder Gill, whose home was targeted in a drive-by shooting early this week, started the station 11 years ago.  It operates under U.S. broadcast rules, with production in Surrey, B.C., allowing outspoken journalists and guests to make comments that would not be heard on Canadian radio.  Gill says the recent drive-by shooting was a blip and not indicative of widespread violence in the community.  Robert Matas, Globe and Mail

• 09/10/10 - When Dawna Friesen debuts as anchor of Global National on September 20, she will be become the first full-time female anchor of a nightly network newscast in Canada.  She has been a foreign correspondent for NBC, based in London, since 1999.  The suppertime newscast will originate from the Global BC CHAN-TV Vancouver studios.

• 09/10/10 - Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE) has agreed to acquire full ownership of CTV Inc. in a deal valued at $1.3 billion.  The transaction, subject to approval by federal regulators, acquires all of CTV's television assets, including the CTV network and specialty cable channels.  Locally, CTV owns and operates CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV Vancouver, along with AM and FM stations in Vancouver and Victoria.  Iain Marlow, Globe and Mail

• 09/09/10 - The FCC has granted transfer of control of the Bustos Media stations in Washington State to NAP Broadcast Holdings, LLC.   Bustos filed to transfer its radio and television licenses to NAP in July, with Amador and John Bustos resigning as part of a merger agreement.  Bustos operated two stations in northwest Washington, KDDS-FM 99.3 Elma and KBTK AM 1210 Auburn-Federal Way, along with eight others and a translator in the state, with total holdings of 28 radio and three TV stations.

• 09/08/10 - KISW-FM 99.9 Seattle has announced that Rick Robertson, aka Double R, who typically does sports news and commentary on the The BJ Shea Morning Experience, is no longer part of the morning drive program.   The reason for his departure was listed only as a management decision.  Double R was a former producer of the show.

• 09/08/10 - Long-time News1130 CKWX Vancouver weekend traffic announcer Sabrina Del Rey (aka Sabrina Storey) is leaving to persue other opportunities.  Her last day is September 26.  The station picks up Lara Fominoff as weekend anchor/weeknight reporter from CKNW AM 980, where she was a part time beat reporter and anchor.  She starts September 13.  CKWX has also acquired Denise Wong from AM 1150 CKFR Kelowna for its web desk three days a week along with various weekend duties beginning September 18.

• 08/19/10 - Reports have been received that Steve Parsons is out as program director at Vancouver market Rock 101 CFMI-FM 101.1 with CFOX-FM 99.3 PD Chris "Dunner" Duncombe assuming PD responsibility for both Corus stations.  Parsons had been with Rock 101 since 2005.

• 08/17/10 - KRKO AM 1380 Everett replaced two of the four towers needed to broadcast its nighttime signal yesterday and today.  The 349 foot and 199 foot towers were destroyed by vandals last September.  Antenna testing is scheduled to begin in October.  Photos courtesy KRKO.  Meanwhile, investigators now say that the towers could have been destroyed by an upset neighbor rather than as a act of eco-terrorism.  KIRO-TV

• 08/17/10 - Former KVI AM 570 Seattle morning host Kirby Wilbur has returned to local airwaves Mondays on KTTH AM 770 for a segment entitled Four O'clock Freedom Shot, which airs during the David Boze Show.  He was released from KVI last November.

• 08/17/10 - The CRTC has approved an application by Hornby Community Radio Society to operate a very low power developmental community FM station on Hornby Island.  It will operate on 96.5 MHz with an ERP of 5 watts non-directional at 30 meters HAAT.  A similar application was approved in 2007, but wasn't implemented.  CRTC release

• 08/06/10 - Former BCTV (now Global BC) CHAN-TV/8 Vancouver news anchor Robert Malcolm died Wednesday, August 4 following a heart attack.  Malcolm was a 30-year news veteran, anchoring for 19 years at BCTV from 1972-91 before being replaced following a ratings decline.  He was 69.  He had suffered a previous heart attack in the BCTV newsroom in the early 1990s.  He was most recently a realtor in the Cultus Lake area.  BC Radio History biographical notes

• 08/05/10 - The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has concluded that two news reports which aired on CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV/32 Vancouver during its late evening newscast on May 7, 2009 did not contain any inaccurate, unfair or biased information.  A viewer had complained that the reports were inaccurate.  CBSC release

• 08/05/10 - Former Vancouver broadcaster and BC Minister of Finance Carole Taylor has been appointed a director of BCE Inc. and Bell Canada.   She hosted several series on CBC-TV Vancouver from 1976-86.   Ms. Taylor was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2001 and is currently a Senior Advisor for Borden Ladner Gervais LLP.  Broadcaster Magazine

• 08/03/10 - Snohomish County hearing examiner Barbara Dykes, who had been criticized by the development community for her rulings on planning and development issues, is leaving her position.  Her biggest decision was denying an application in 2008 by KRKO AM 1380 Everett to build radio towers outside Snohomish, citing health concerns for nearby residents.  The County Council overturned her ruling and a Superior Court judge backed the council's decision.  Noah Haglund, HeraldNet

• 06/30/10 - Two prominent figures retired today from their positions at CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV/32 Vancouver.  Director of engineering Vladimir Rybarczyk spearheaded the start-up of the station in 1997 as Vancouver Television.  "Vlad" and his team created a masterpiece of engineering for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.  Also retiring is reporter David Kincaid, who has been with CTV since 2004 and previously had been with the Vancouver Show and a news reporter at CKVU-TV/10 (now Citytv) Vancouver for nearly two decades.

• 06/30/10 - Former News1130 CKWX AM Vancouver news anchor, and for several years executive director, George Gordon has found himself a new home as morning news anchor at CFRA AM 580 Ottawa.  He also takes on some coaching and mentoring duties.  He had worked at a number of stations in Ontario and Manitoba before joining News1130 in 1999.

• 06/25/10 - A memorial service has been announced for former CBC Vancouver audio engineer Ken Berube who died May 2 at age 61.  It will be held Sunday afternoon, July 11th at Gleneagles Golf Course in West Vancouver.  Ken's son, Lucas Berube requests that anyone wishing to attend contact him at lucas.berube@gmail.com.

• 06/24/10 - After a year as PD at Vibe 98.5 CIBK-FM Calgary, Ceara Kavanagh returns to KOOL CHBE-FM 107.3 Victoria in afternoon drive.  She had been MD/PD at KOOL before moving to Calgary last year.

• 06/24/10 - After starting up about ten years ago, it appears that the L-band Eureka-147 Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system is ending in Canada.  Last week, CBC notified Industry Canada that it was shutting down its DAB transmitters.  CBC Vancouver engineering says that there were two transmitters operating locally, one at Metrotown in Burnaby, which has been shut down for about six months, and the other on Mount Seymour, which will be turned off soon.   Licenses also were issued to many private broadcasters, but many failed to get on the air.  Leslie Stimson, Radio World  NorthEast Radio Watch

• 06/23/10 - An Ontario court today approved the sale of Canwest Global Communications Corp.’s television assets to Shaw Communications Inc.  The court approval is a major step toward Canwest's broadcast division emerging from restructuring but still needs CRTC and Competition Bureau approval.  One of Canwest's strongest OTA assets is Global BC CHAN-TV Vancouver, with its network of rebroadcast stations throughout British Columbia.  Jamie Sturgeon, Financial Post

• 06/23/10 - The door continues to revolve at Rogers Radio Vancouver as morning host Scott Miller has been dismissed from fun-FM CFUN-FM 104.9.  Scott has worked at major stations on both sides of the border, including in the Windsor/Detroit and Chicago markets.  Meanwhile, former Rogers Radio personality Pam Stevens has been filling in for afternoon host Kelly Latremouille this week.  She is scheduled to fill in for morning hosts Larry & Willy on JACK fm CKLG-FM 96.9 later in July and August.

• 06/21/10 - The Coast CKAY-FM 91.7 Gibsons has moved to a classic hits format for the summer.  Station owner Bob Morris made the announcement at noon today.  Also introduced are long music sets every hour and all-music hours weekdays at 9 a.m. and noon.

• 06/21/10 - Former p.m. drive host Curtis Pope has moved to morning drive at Country 107.1 CKQC-FM Abbotsford following the recent release of Steve Fanning, who had hosted the show since 2006.  Curtis was the BC Country Music Association On-Air Personality of the Year Award winner for 2008 & 09.

• 06/21/10 - KOMO-TV Seattle sports director and 5 p.m. news anchor Eric Johnson will receive his second national Edward R. Murrow Award October 11 in New York City.  It is one of 89 national awards given by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTNDA) to honor the country’s most outstanding news, sports and feature coverage.  AFTRA info

• 06/20/10 - Northwest Public Radio made its debut on KVTI-FM 90.9 Tacoma shortly after 4 p.m. today.  The 51,000 watt signal is owned by Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood and through an agreement, NWPR will manage the station with NPR and classical programming.  The signal covers approximately 2 million potential listeners, primarily in Tacoma, Olympia and South King County, effectively doubling the population broadcast footprint of NWPR with a near statewide public radio broadcasting service.

• 06/18/10 - The CRTC has approved an application by CTVglobemedia to operate its CIVT-TV Vancouver digital TV transmitter on channel 32 with a maximum ERP of 33,000 watts at 740.3 meters HAAT.   CIVT-DT is currently operating on channel 33 with 12,600 watts.  The Canadian digital TV switchover is scheduled for August 31, 2011.  CRTC decision 

• 06/18/10 - Dr. Demento will be featuring a tribute to Robert O. Smith and playing some of his songs on his Saturday (06/19) program, which can be heard streamed at his website.  The multi-voiced Robert O, who had worked at KJR, KOL, KVI and KIXI-FM Seattle; KTAC Tacoma; CFMI-FM and CISL Vancouver and CKMA Abbotsford died May 30 at age 67.

• 06/18/10 - KVTI-FM 90.9 Tacoma signed off Wednesday night at midnight, ending a long run at Clover Park Technical College.  CPTC announced earlier it would end its Radio Broadcaster program.  Starting Monday, June 22nd, 90.9 will return to the air as part of Northwest Public Radio operated by Washington State University, broadcasting classical music and NPR news.  Backgrounder

• 02/18/10 - The KOMO-TV Seattle analog antenna atop its tower has now been replaced with a new digital one.  Chief Engineer John Barrett says the signal will increase to a million watts and the tower will be the first to have specialized vertical polarization needed for handheld devices.  Crews will continue to climb the tower for the next few weeks with all work expected to be completed about March 1st.   KOMO video

• 02/17/10 - KAPY-LP 95.5 Port Angeles will launch shortly with a Traditional Country format along with community supported programming.  FCC records show it will operate with 100 watts non-directional at -102.1 meters HAAT at 48-06-45 123-31-50.  There has been a corporation board change and amendment of name from Calvary Chapel of Port Angeles to Dry Creek Community Broadcasting.  The station will move to another frequency at a future time.

• 01/14/10 - Bill Gates' investment company, Cascade Investment, sold 26,000 shares of Seattle-based Fisher Communications on Monday and Tuesday, reducing its stake to 429,700 Fisher shares, or 4.8%.  As a result, Gates will no longer have to file SEC reports about his Fisher holdings, providing they stay below the 5% reporting threshold.  RBR News

• 01/12/10 - RJ1200 CJRJ AM Vancouver has announced a new weekday talk show called Click Lounge to begin Wednesday, January 13 at 2 p.m.  It is produced and hosted by media personality Tarannum Thind and business woman Rina Gill.  Thind is known for hosting and associate producing Chai Time, which has aired almost 600 episodes on Channel M/OMNI TV CHNM-TV/42.  Rina Gill owns and operates The Hype Advertising Agency which caters to both mainstream and multi-cultural markets.
