  • 12/20/06 - Last week's near-hurricane force winds took their toll on local TV stations, with reported power failures affecting over-the-air transmissions of KHCV-TV/45 Seattle, KUNS-TV/51 Bellevue, along with their digital transmitters, plus KBTC-TV/28 and KWDK-DT/42 Tacoma.  By comparison, Typhoon Frieda, which struck in October 1962, knocked out virtually every radio station north of California.

  • 12/10/06 - After 13 years of service, Cathie Valentine-McKinney is stepping down as Executive Director of the Puget Sound Radio Broadcasters Association (PSRBA) at the end of the year.   PSRBA photo & info
  • 12/08/06 - Forty year radio veteran Joe Easingwood has signed a new contract with CFAX AM 1070 Victoria through late summer 2009.  He started in afternoons at the station in 1981 and currently hosts Newsline mid mornings.  Broadcaster Magazine
  • 12/08/06 - Aboriginal Voices Radio spokesman Roy Hennessy reports that CKAV-FM-2 106.3 Vancouver began NAVCOM testing at 2 p.m. Wednesday (12/06) with four-hour loops of music and announcements, after receiving clearance from both Industry Canada and the FCC.   Testing will continue for the next few weeks, before official sign-on.  AVR received CRTC authorization in 2003 for a transmitter to operate at 850 kHz in Abbotsford, but that service will not proceed.  Meanwhile its new Edmonton station, CKAV-FM-4, will likely be up and running in about six weeks.
  • 12/07/06 - Aboriginal Voices Radio CKAV-FM-2 106.3 Vancouver has resumed testing.  The new station conducted tests during the summer but has been silent following objections to the CRTC from adjacent channel Praise KWPZ-FM 106.5 Lynden that its signal would be affected in the Surrey area south of Vancouver.

  • 12/06/06 - Tim Shook, KNHC-FM 89.5 Seattle student station manager during the 1975-76 school year, takes a fond look back at the station's roots.  He moved on to Seattle's KEZX-FM and Tacoma's former KBRD-FM and KTNT/KNBQ-FM.  RW Online 
  • 12/02/06 - Coinciding with one of the most severe snow storms in several years, CHMJ AM 730 Vancouver moved last Sunday from Continuous All Day Traffic to All Traffic All the Time.   Exceptions will be Vancouver Giants hockey and Seattle Seahawks football games.
  • 12/01/06 - B.C.'s first private TV station and only the second outlet in the province, CHEK-TV/6 Victoria, now branded as CH, began life with an Indian-head test pattern 50 years ago today.  canada.com backgrounder
  • 12/01/06 - Work begins next week on a new style of hour-long, local news broadcast for CBC TV to begin airing in April on CBUT-TV/2 Vancouver, and will continue to be hosted by Ian Hanomansing and Gloria Macarenko.  The move marks an abrupt turnaround in the reductions in CBC local TV newscasts, particularly in 2000 when local supper-time news shows were cut to 30 minutes from 60.  Guy Dixon, Globe & Mail
  • 11/30/06 - Westwave Broadcasting Inc. has applied to the CRTC for a new commercial FM station in Powell River.  It would operate at 105.3 MHz non-directional with an ERP of 3,000 watts.  A Pop Adult music format is proposed with approximately 40% pre-1980s music.  Westwave operates CKAY-FM 91.7 Gibsons, which signed on last spring.  CRTC Info
  • 11/30/06 - Vista Radio Ltd. has applied to the CRTC to convert CHQB AM 1280 Powell River to FM 94.1 MHz directional with an average ERP of 8,600 watts (45,000 watts peak).  The proposed station would maintain its current adult contemporary music format.  CRTC Info
  • 11/28/06 - Bill Dobson, long-time CBC-TV Vancouver news reporter/editor, died in Princeton, B.C. on November 24 at age 75.  He began his career in 1949 at CHUB Nanaimo, later joining CJVI Victoria.  He was with CKLG North Vancouver from its startup in 1955 until joining the CBC in 1961.  He co-hosted The Best Years series with Joyce Resin starting in 1986, prior to transfering to CBC Radio Vancouver as senior editor, where he retired in 1989.  A memorial service will be announced at a future date.  Photo

  • 11/27/06 - The CRTC has approved application by Matthew G. McBride for a new commercial FM station in Pemberton.  CFPV-FM will offer a blend of rock and pop music from the 1970s and 80s, along with news, sports, weather and a weekly open line program.  It will operate at 98.9 MHz with an ERP of 420 watts.  CRTC Decision
  • 11/27/06 - The CRTC has approved application by The Mountain Culture Collective Radio Society for a very low-power developmental community FM station in Whistler.  The station will produce programming in eight languages and feature local and visiting musical talent.  It will operate at 97.9 MHz with an ERP of 5 watts.  CRTC Decision
  • 11/25/06 - Legendary broadcaster Red Robinson, who was born in Comox on Vancouver Island and spent his early years in Fanny Bay, is the first inductee into the Comox Valley Walk of Achievement.  Mark Allan, Comox Valley Record
  • 11/25/06 - The Puget Sound Station as KVI AM 570 Seattle was known in the early days, celebrated it's 80th birthday yesterday (11/24).  The station was at 1280 on the dial at its inception, with 50 watts and studio in Tacoma.  Meanwhile, KING-TV/5 Seattle turns 58 today.
  • 11/24/06 - After transmitter testing since late October, RJ 1200 CJRJ AM 1200 Vancouver officially signs on tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 25) at 12 minutes to 7 p.m.  The station is targeted to listeners aged 18-44 with a lively mix of Bollywood, hip hop, Indi-pop, rap and bhangra.  It broadcasts in 17 languages with live news, sports and weather hourly with a 30-minute major newscast nightly at 6:30.  Sundays are devoted to 10 languages including Filipino, Farsi and Italian.

  • 11/08/06 - Canada's third largest private company, The Jim Pattison Group is focusing on expanding its radio operations, but is rumored to be a potential buyer of several television stations in the Bell Globemedia takeover of CHUM Ltd.  However, president Rick Arnish says the group is concerned about the outlook for conventional TV in Canada.  Grant Robertson, The Globe and Mail
  • 11/08/06 - TV cameraman Howard Ramaley, whose 33-year career bagan at KMO-TV/13 Tacoma in 1953, has died at the age of 84.  A memorial service is scheduled for December 2 at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 19834 Eighth Ave. S. in Des Moines.  David Bowermaster, Seattle Times
  • 11/07/06 - RJ 1200 CJRJ AM Vancouver continues to test its new 25 kW transmitter in anticipation of a late November launch.   In regard to chosing an AM frequency, station president Shushma Datt said, "There was simply nothing left on the FM dial that provided an unimpaired signal, while the AM dial had some very viable options for a strong, clear signal and the 1200 spot was the best of those available.”  The station's format will be predominantly Bollywood, Bhangra, Hip Hop and Indi-pop, targeted towards young South Asians aged 18-44, with a Sunday line-up featuring international languages including Filipino, Italian and Farsi. 
  • 11/07/06 - Vancouver radio and TV talk show host Vicki Gabereau is one of nine distinguished Canadians to be inducted into The Canadian Association of Broadcasters Broadcast Hall of Fame at the CAB's 80th Annual Convention in Vancouver.  Broadcaster Magazine  Kevin Newman, anchor and executive editor of the Vancouver-based Global National, has been voted "Best News Anchor" for the second consecutive year at the 21st annual Gemini Awards at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond.  Broadcaster Magazine
  • 11/02/06 - Fisher Broadcasting's newly acquired KWOG-TV/51 Bellevue has changed call letters to KUNS-TV.
  • 11/01/06 - The FCC has denied an Application for Review by Triple Bogey, further paving the way for the move-in of KMCQ-FM 104.5 The Dalles OR to Covington WA.  To facilitate the move, the FCC granted construction permits in late September to change the frequency of KASB-FM 89.3 Bellevue to 89.9 and to change the frequency of KMIH-FM 104.5 Mercer Island to 88.9.  FCC information
  • 10/31/06 - A memorial service for longtime Vancouver Sun columnist and CJOR sports commentator Denny Boyd will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 3 at Mount Seymour United Church, 1200 Parkgate Ave., North Vancouver.  Boyd died Friday at age 76 after a battle with cancer.  Sun/Province obituary
  • 10/30/06 - After getting up early for close to 30 years, The Mountain KMTT-FM 103.7 morning co-host Mike West is hanging up his microphone.  He started his radio career at Nathan Hale's KNHC-FM, with a long run at KISW-FM and KXRX-FM.  Reports indicate that morning show partner John Fisher will be moving to afternoons, with a new a.m. drive team to be announced.  KMTT info

  • 10/28/06 - Longtime Vancouver Sun columnist Denny Boyd died Friday morning (10/27) from bladder cancer in Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver.  He was 76.  In addition to his many years at The Sun, he wrote several books and was a sports commentator at CJOR Vancouver from 1972-77.  He received the Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 and was awarded the Order of British Columbia in 2005.  Pete McMartin, Vancouver Sun tribute  OBC biography
  • 10/27/06 - CJRJ AM 1200 Vancouver has begun transmitter testing.  The station operates with 25 kW with slightly different directional patterns day and night.  The CRTC approved application July 21, 2005 by I.T. Productions Ltd. to operate a new ethnic station directed predominantly to Vancouver’s South Asian communities.  I.T. is owned by Shushma Datt, who has operated Radio Rim Jhim to ethnic audiences for the past 18 years via the subsidiary communications multiplex operations (SCMO) of CJJR-FM 93.7 Vancouver.  CRTC approval
  • 10/26/06 - A public service will be held Tuesday, November 7 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard Street in Vancouver in memory of Daryl Duke, who died Saturday morning (10/21) at his home in West Vancouver.  Province/Sun obituary
  • 10/26/06 - CH CHEK-TV/6 Victoria, the first private TV station in B.C., celebrated 50 years of broadcasting last night with a champagne toast and staff reunion.  Among the attendees were Andy Stephen, Bob Aylward, host of the 1960s dance show Club 6, John Barton of Barton and Company and CHEK-TV co-founder Charlie White.  The station officially went on air December 1st, 1956.

  • 10/21/06 - Multiple award winner Daryl Duke, whose film and TV career spanned five decades in Canada and the U.S., died this morning (10/21) in West Vancouver at age 77.  Dr. Duke was one of the first television producer/directors at CBUT Vancouver in the 1950s and one of the founders of the city's second private television station CKVU-TV, which signed on in 1976.  Website Memoriam  Canada.com   Chad Skelton, Vancouver Sun
  • 10/20/06 - Susan Englebert, a 30-year veteran of CBC Radio, died last night (10/19) at her home in Victoria.  She began her career as a production assistant on The Great Canadian Gold Rush in the 1960s and was Head of CBC Radio 3 and New Media when she retired in May 2002.  CBC obituary

  • 10/20/06 - Global television news is acquiring a Robinson R44 helicopter for news and traffic coverage beginning November 6, to compete with CTV's Chopper 9.  The addition is part of an airborne fleet expansion that will provide expanded news coverage in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Hamilton.   It also will provide traffic coverage for Vancouver market CKNW AM 980 and its Corus sister stations.  Broadcaster Magazine
  • 10/20/06 - The CRTC has announced that application by CFCP Radio Ltd. to convert CHQB AM 1280 Powell River to 94.1 FM, which was to be heard at a public hearing in Regina SK October 30, has been been withdrawn and will be heard at a later date.  CRTC info
  • 10/19/06 - The FCC has granted construction permit to Grays Harbor Educational Media for a minor change in licensed facilities for KAYO-LP 94.3 Aberdeen.  Transmitter will remain at 100 watts with a move from 46-58-32 123-50-1 south to 46-56-59 123-49-13 with an increase in HAAT from -33.6 to -14 meters.  FCC data
  • 10/17/06 - Veteran broadcaster Mike Phillips died yesterday afternoon (10/16) at his brother's home in Portland, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.  He was 64.  Phillips began his 40-year career at KAYO Seattle in 1961, followed by on-air positions at KISN Portland, KJR Seattle, and at stations in San Francisco, New York and Chicago.  After eleven years at K-EARTH KRTH-FM Los Angeles, he retired as PD in 2001.  He had recently worked with the Oldies channels at Sirius Satellite Radio.  Airchexx airchecks   Rock Radio Scrapbook KJR aircheck
  • 10/11/06 - CHMJ AM 730 Vancouver has tweaked its Continuous Drive Time Traffic format to include Continuous All Day Traffic.  The station now offers continuous traffic reports airing from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Included is play-by-play coverage of the Vancouver Whitecaps, Vancouver Giants and Seattle Seahawks.
  • 10/06/06 - Vaugn Bjerre, who was on air at CKMO and CKWX Vancouver during the 1940s, died at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver on September 25th at age 81.  After working at Ontario stations in the 1950s, he was Vice President of CFTR/CHFI-FM Toronto during the 1960s and 70s.  A Memorial Service will be held Friday October 13th at 11a.m. at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra St., Victoria.  Times-Colonist obituary
  • 10/06/06 - CTV morning news anchor and national news correspondent Ravi Baichwal is reported to be moving to the weekend anchor position at WLS-TV/7 Chicago in late November.  He was an anchor/reporter with CIVT-TV/32 Vancouver (then branded as Vancouver Television) from 1999 to 2002 before making the move to Toronto.  Chicago Sun-Times
  • 10/05/06 - Testing is being completed at the new transmitter site for Sumner area KZIZ AM 1560, which will allow the station to move to 24-hour operation.  Bill Virgin, Seattle P-I
  • 09/28/06 - Following the death of the program's founder and host Robert Baron in August, Music With Moskowitz will run for the final time this Saturday on KSER-FM 90.7 Everett.   The station will expand its rockabilly show Pull the String to fill the time slot.  Bill Virgin, Seattle P-I
  • 09/26/06 - Vancouver musician, promoter, and producer Rocket Norton has released his new book, Lost in Space.  The book is mostly a story about how the Seeds Of Time morphed into Prism, with some historic information on the early days of Red Robinson at CJOR, CKWX and CFUN, and the beginning of CKLG-FM, later C-FOX.  Official book release party is at Neptoon Records Tuesday, October 3.
  • 09/26/06 - The FCC has granted construction permits to Bellevue School District #405 to change the frequency of KASB-FM 89.3 Bellevue to 89.9, with an ERP increase from 8 to 60 watts, and to Mercer Island School District #400 to change frequency of KMIH-FM 104.5 Mercer Island to 88.9 with ERP remaining at 30 watts.  FCC KASB data  FCC KMIH data

  • 09/16/06 - A private VIP reception and show featuring Paul Revere and the Raiders and Bill Medley, along with a number of dignitaries, including Senator Larry Campbell, Coquitlam Mayor Maxine Wilson, Bruce Allen, Wink Martindale, Peter Reveen, Vicki Gabareau, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President Terry Stewart was held last night at the new Red Robinson Show Theatre in Coquitlam.   Official public opening is tonight with Little Richard performing.  The show theatre is named for the veteran Vancouver broadcaster.  Canada.com
  • 09/14/06 - Air America spokesperson Jamie Horn responds to rumors of restructuring with, "No decision has been taken to make any filing of any kind."  Radio Ink   R&R
  • 09/13/06 - Reports are circulating that Air America Radio will announce a major restructuring this Friday, which is expected to include a bankruptcy filing.  Air America programming is heard locally on Progressive Talk KPTK AM 1090 Seattle.  Think Progress posting
  • 09/12/06 - KCTS-DT/41 Seattle has been off air over the weekend due to transmitter problems.  Station officials expect the digital signal to return later today. 
  • 09/08/06 - The CRTC has approved application by Powell River Model Community Project for Persons with Disabilities to operate a low-power Type B community FM radio station in Powell River.  The CRTC previously approved a developmental community station, which is in operation.  The station, Jump Radio CJMP-FM, will continue to operate at 90.1 MHz with an ERP of 3.6 watts.  CRTC details
  • 09/07/06 - The CRTC has approved application by UCFV Campus and Community Radio Society for a new community-based campus FM station at the University College of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford.   The new station, CIVL-FM is authorized to operate at 88.5 MHz directional with an average ERP of 92 watts (300 watts peak).  The application was previously approved in part on March 26/06, but the proposed technical perameters were deemed unacceptable.
  • 09/07/06 - The insurance fraud trial for former KIRO AM 710 Seattle talk show host Mike Webb has begun.   KIRO fired Webb after the charges were laid, however his show still airs in syndication on a number of stations.  Paul Shukovsky, Seattle P-I
  • 09/07/06 - Traditional broadcasters are looking at ways to extend their reach by offering live streaming of broadcasts and on-demand podcasts on Cingular Wireless cell phone service.  Bill Virgin, Seattle P-I
  • 09/01/06 - Bell Globemedia Inc. and CHUM Limited have announced that BGM has been successful in its offer to acquire CHUM Limited.  On July 12/06 it was announced that Bell Globemedia would pay C$1.7 billion for CHUM Ltd., in a deal that will see the company merged into a BCE-owned media conglomerate, subject to future CRTC approval.  Locally, CHUM owns Citytv and three radio stations in Vancouver plus A-Channel and two radio stations in Victoria.  Bell Globemedia owns CTV British Columbia in Vancouver.  Bell Globemedia release
  • 08/31/06 - CFCP Radio Ltd. has applied to the CRTC to convert CFWB AM 1490 Campbell River to the FM band.  The new station would operate on 106.1 MHz with an average effective radiated power of 663 watts (peak ERP 5,000 watts).  The station would maintain its current country music format and local programming focus.  CRTC application

  • 08/31/06 - Clear FM CKCL-FM 104.9 Vancouver has announced that after a seven year hiatus, Fred Latremouille and Cathy Baldazzi are returning to the city's morning radio waves effective Tuesday, September 5 at 5:30 a.m.  The popular duo hosted mornings at CFUN, then CKKS-FM during most of the 1990s.  Latremouille started in Vancouver radio at CJOR in 1962 after a stint in northern Alberta.  Meanwhile Clear FM is running uninterrupted Favourites of Yesterday and Today over the holiday weekend, leading up to the new morning show Tuesday, which will feature sister station CKWX AM 1130 News1130 anchor Don Lehn and Global Vancouver weatherman Wayne Cox.

  • 08/24/06 - KHCV-TV/45 has begun broadcasting Hispanic programming with Azteca America on its analog and 44.2 digital channels.  KHCV President Dr. Kenneth Casey commented, "To do something for the Hispanic community by providing programming for that segment of the Seattle population was something I felt was an obvious course to take.  Azteca America offered everything we were looking for in that regard as we decided to transition and position this station for the future".  Jewelry Television continues on digital channel 44.1.
  • 08/22/06 - The FCC has granted transfer of control of KWOG-TV/51 Bellevue from Christopher J. Racine to Fisher Broadcasting Company.   Sale of the station was announced by Fisher on June 29/06.

  • 08/14/06 - Interference tests along the border are ongoing and expected to be completed in the next couple of weeks for the new Vancouver Aboriginal Voices Radio station to launch on 106.3 MHz.  Tests are to ensure the FCC and Industry Canada that the signal will not illegally interfere with Praise KWPZ-FM 106.5 Lynden.  The CRTC has denied a 7000 signature petition generated by the station opposing use of the 106.3 frequency in Vancouver.  CKAV-FM-2 is expected on air shortly after testing is completed.  AVR's Ottawa station signed on last week and Calgary last month.  To come in the fall are stations in Montreal, Edmonton and Kitchener with applications in for Saskatoon and Regina.
  • 08/13/06 - Long-time CBC staffer Jim King died at Tabor Home in Abbotsford on Thursday, August 10 at age 80.  He joined the CBC in 1955, and during his 30 years there, held positions in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.  He was a long-standing member of the CBC 20 Year Association.  Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley; children Carole, Terry and Jim; and grandchildren TJ and Brody.  A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 15th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair, Abbotsford.
  • 08/11/06 - Trinity Broadcasting Network KTBW-TV/20 Tacoma has had a failure in its digital transmitter, KTBW-DT/14.  Station officials report that parts are on order but it will be off air for at least two weeks.
  • 07/30/06 - Ronald "Ron" Stiles died at his home in Bellingham on Saturday, July 29 at age 56.  He was part of the 20/20 news team at CKLW Windsor ON before moving to the newsroom at Vancouver market CKNW in the 1970s.  Arrangements are pending with Jerns Funeral Chapel & Crematory in Bellingham.

  • 07/11/06 - The CRTC has approved application by Multivan Broadcast Corporation to operate a digital TV transmitter in Victoria to rebroadcast the programming of CHNM-DT/20 Vancouver (approved 3/10/06 and not yet on air).  The new Victoria transmitter will operate on channel 54 with an average ERP of 78 watts.  CRTC decision

  • 07/04/06 - The sign-on of Aboriginal Voices Radio has been delayed once again, this time because of objections to the CRTC from Praise KWPZ-FM 106.5 Lynden that its signal would be affected in the Surrey area.  The CRTC allowed another delay, but AVR chief of operations Roy Hennessy says, "We got a favorable signal last week and the wheels are in motion again."  When the station signs on, it will initially feature prerecorded programming while Industry Canada conducts mandatory tests, which could take 3-6 weeks.  AVR applied to change call letters for all of the stations in Canada and approval has been received to ID as CKAV plus a numerical identifier for each market.   CKAV-2-FM 106.3 for Vancouver.
  • 07/03/06 - The new station on 107.9 MHz in South Bend has picked up the previous 92.5 call letters of KLSY-FM.  The station will operate with 790 watts directional, 276 meters HAAT at 46-41-44 123-46-17.  Meanwhile the FCC has granted volunteer assigment of the construction permit from South Sound Broadcasting, LLC to South Bend Broadcasting, LLC.

  • 06/29/06 - Seattle-based Fisher Communications has announced that it has entered into an agreement to purchase the stock of African-American Broadcasting of Bellevue, Inc., licensee of KWOG-TV/51 Bellevue for $16 million.  Fisher intends to provide Hispanic programming on KWOG through a Univision affiliate.  The transfer of control is subject to FCC approval.  Fisher release

  • 06/28/06 - B.C. celebrities, including CBC British Columbia Canada Now anchor Gloria Macarenko, donated their time and talent to read newspaper and magazine articles for VoicePrint Canada’s special 10-hour holiday weekend broadcast on Monday, July 3.  VoicePrint is a specialty media service for the 4.5 million Canadians who can’t access magazines and newspapers due to blindness or other vision restrictions, learning or physical disability, low literacy skills or the effects of getting older.  The Canada Day special will air from 12 noon to 10 p.m. PT July 3 and will be repeated in one-hour installments July 4 to 19 at 4 p.m. PT.  Broadcaster Magazine

  • 06/22/06 - The CRTC has approved use of 106.3 MHz in Vancouver by Aboriginal Voices Radio for its new English and Native language station, which was approved in part by the Commission on June 5, 2001.  CRTC info   The station has announced that it will begin broadcasting June 30 as part of a new national AVR network.

  • 06/08/06 - Convention/cruise ship entertainer Peter Rolston died around midnight Tuesday, June 6 at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. He was the host and ventriloquist of Pete's Place on CHAN-TV Vancouver during the 1960s and '70s.  He was 70.

  • 06/07/06 - Robert Fortune died last Saturday (06/03) at the age of 81.  Known on air as Bob Fortune, and reknowned for his soft, mellow voice and signature bowtie, he was the TV weatherman for CBUT Vancouver from 1954-75.  He began his career with CKMO in the late forties, moving to CKWX before starting with the CBC.  He also hosted a number of CBC TV series including Pacific 13 in 1956/57, Pleasure Boating in 1959, Klahanie from 1967-72, Hourglass in the 1970s and The Inventors in 1979.  For the last thirteen years, he lived on Hornby Island, B.C.

  • 06/01/06 - KIXI AM 880 Seattle has abandoned its local live and voice tracked programming in favor of the Music of Your Life satellite feed featuring voice tracking by celebrity DJs such as Gary Owens,  Wink Martindale and Peter Marshall.  The change was effective at midnight.

  • 05/30/06 - It appears that MOJO CHMJ AM 730 has lost the two-way sports format contest in Vancouver to rival Team 1040 CKST.  The station is currently running promos for "continuous drive-time traffic and the best of talk".  Reports indicate that 14 people have lost their jobs, including John McKeachie, Bob Marjanovich, Jeff Paterson, Blake Price and sister station CKNW AM 980 sports director J.P. McConnell.   The new format will begin Monday, June 5.

  • 05/24/06 - Aboriginal Voices Radio Inc. has applied to the CRTC to use 106.3 MHz for the operation of its Native Type B FM English and Native-languages station in Vancouver, approved in decision 2001-314 on June 5, 2001The application was filed in response to the decision, which stated that a license would only be issued to AVR if it submitted an application proposing the use of another suitable FM frequency.  CRTC info
  • 05/21/06 - The first head coach of the B.C.   • 05/10/06 - Vice President of national CTV News, Tom Haberstroh has been appointed to the position of Vice-President and General Manager for CTV British Columbia CIVT-TV/9 Vancouver.  He moves back to his native Vancouver, succeeding Jim Rusnak, who has held the position since 2003. Rusnak is moving on to another assignment at CTV, which will be announced at a later date.  CTV release 
  • 05/09/06 - O.K. Radio Group Ltd. and the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group have jointly announced the sale of The Q CKKQ-FM 100.3 and The Zone CJZN-FM 91.3 Victoria by O.K Radio to the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group.  Dan McAllister will continue to lead the teams and all of the staff members at both stations will be offered positions with the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group.  The sale is subject to CRTC approval.
  • 05/09/06 - The FCC has granted modification of construction permit to KVOS-DT/35 Bellingham for 580 kW ERP at 799 meters HAAT at 48-40-50 122-50-22.  The station is currently operating with Special Temporary Authority with 12 kW ERP at -42 meters HAAT at 48-44-34 122-28-15.
  • 05/08/06 - The CBC has applied to the CRTC to move its Radio One Vancouver translator CBRU AM 1270 Squamish to FM.  The new station would operate at 98.3 MHz with a maximum effective radiated power of 3,000 watts at -389.53 meters HAAT.  Lease of its AM transmitter site will expire on July 24, forcing the station to shut down at that time.   CRTC info  
  • 05/05/06 - Daystar Television Network station KWDK-T/56 Tacoma has been off air for about a month.   A representative of Daystar advises that network programming has moved to channel 58 (KUSE-LP/58 Seattle).  Meanwhile, digital KWDK-DT/42 is running Daystar Network programming,
    but are identifying as KWBF-TV/42 Little Rock AR.

  • 04/28/06 - Seattle-based Fisher Communications Inc. narrowed its first-quarter loss to $1.7 million, compared with a loss of $5.1 million a year ago.  Revenue rose 9 percent to $33.8 million.  The company credited the improvement to stronger advertising revenue at its ABC affiliates in Seattle and Portland as well as its Seattle radio group.  Fisher release
  • 04/24/06 - The OK Radio Group, whose roster of privately owned stations includes The Q CKKQ-FM 100.3 and The Zone CJZN-FM 91.3 Victoria, has reportedly sold its five Alberta radio stations to Rogers Broadcasting.  Rogers already owns both The Ocean CIOC-FM 98.5 and Jack CHTT-FM 103.1 in Victoria.  CRTC regulations limit ownership to a maximum of two stations in a market.  The sale is subject to CRTC approval.

  • 04/16/06 - Former CFUN and CKWX Vancouver DJ Tom Peacock died last night (04/15) at St. Paul's Hospital in the city.  He succumbed to a second stroke following quintuple bypass surgery a few days ago.  He was 67.  Peacock later was Program Director then General Manager of CKWX/CJAZ-FM/CKKS-FM Vancouver during the seventies and eighties.
  • 04/15/06 - Ray Carroll, a member of The Platters during the 1950s, died April 5th at his home in Vancouver.  He was 82.   Carroll hosted a radio show at CJAZ-FM and was the producer of a cable TV soul music show during the 1980s.  He still was active as a producer and agent.  A tribute will be held at Rossini's, 1525 Yew Street in the Kitsilano area, at 2:00 p.m. on April 18th   Sun/Province obituary

  • 04/07/06 - Pioneer Vancouver broadcaster Art Jones died April 7 of a massive heart attack at age 80.  He was a boy actor/singer at several Vancouver radio stations during the 1940s and photo journalist for the Vancouver Sun during the '50s, prior to winning the license for Vancouver's second TV station, CHAN-TV/8 in 1960.  He was still active as the producer/host of Art Jones & Company on Shaw Cable TV Vancouver.  Jones was the recipient of the Variety Club Heart Award in 1994 and Pioneer Award in 2001, and Tourism Vancouver's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996.  VPL biography  History of Vancouver bio  Shaw Cable photo  Press Release

  • 03/29/06 - Vancouver market CKNW AM 980 has shuffled the weekend deck.  Shell Busey's Home Discovery Show moves to 5-8 a.m. Saturdays, longtime Vancouver radio/TV broadcaster Cameron Bell returns to the airwaves to host his own show Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and movie/media critic Rick Forchuck hosts his own show at 10 a.m.  Gone is Saturday morning host Jim Fraser to weekday mornings at the new CKAY-FM 91.7 Gibsons, which officially signs on May 20.  CKAY has also picked up News1130 CKWX AM 1130 sports announcer Scott Russell for sales and sports.
  • 03/27/06 - The CRTC has extended to June 30, 2006 the deadline for Aboriginal Voices Radio (AVR) to file an application for the use of a frequency other than 90.9 MHz in Vancouver and to commence operation of its previously authorized station to serve the city.  CRTC info
  • 03/26/06 - Channel M CHNM-TV/42 Vancouver has signed on its Victoria translator CHNM-TV-1 on channel 29.  The facility operates with a peak ERP of 8800 watts at 265 meters HAAT.
  • 03/25/06 - Country singer Buck Owens, who played and hosted radio shows at KAYE Puyallup and KTNT Tacoma in the late 1950s, died early this morning at his Bakersfield, CA home at age 76.  He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1996.  Buck Owens website   Yahoo bio
  • 03/20/06 - CKAY-FM 91.7 Sechelt has begun on-air testing.  The station will officially sign on at noon May 20th and will cover the Lower Sunshine Coast from Egmont to Langdale, Central Vancouver Island and parts of the Lower Mainland.
  • 03/18/06 - Skagit Valley radio icon Dan Bartolovic died in Anacortes January 19th at the age of 60.  Danny B hosted the KAPS AM 660 Mount Vernon morning show from 1989 to 2001, was program director, handled sports play-by-play, was track announcer at Skagit Speedway and public address announcer for the Bellingham Mariners and Tacoma Tigers baseball teams.

  • 03/15/06 - In a new six-year contract, the NHL Vancouver Canucks are moving to Team 1040 CKST AM 1040 Vancouver from CKNW AM 980, an association which goes back to 1970.   Canucks Vice-President of Broadcast & New Media Chris Hebb says that both sides are working towards bringing play-by-play announcer John Shorthouse and analyst Tom Larscheid along as part of the deal.  Canucks release  Team 1040 release

  • 03/14/06 - The CRTC has approved application by UCFV Campus and Community Radio Society to operate a community-based campus FM radio station at the University College of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford to operate at 88.5 MHz with an average effective radiated power of 92 watts.  However, the Commission has denied the proposed technical perameters.  CRTC decision

  • 01/11/06 - Corus Radio has announced the appointment of Jim (JJ) Johnston as General Manager for Corus Radio Vancouver (CHMJ, CKNW, CFOX-FM, CFMI-FM) effective February 28.  Johnston was most recently General Manager of Corus Radio Toronto.

  • 01/09/06 - A transmitter fire at KARR AM 1460 Kirkland, which shares facilities with the nightime transmitter of KKDZ AM 1250 Seattle is off air due to a fire.  KKDZ is continuing, reportedly using its daytime transmitter site.
  • 01/09/06 - CBUT-DT/58 Vancouver, which remaps to 2.1 on ATSC tuners, is now on air with regular programming. Vancouver now has two digital TV stations, including CIVT-DT/33, with CHAN-DT/22 expected to start testing in September.
