- 12/31/05 - The Reverend Art Hives died December
15 in Victoria at the age of 80. He hosted a Saturday afternoon jazz program on CKMO
Vancouver from 1947 to the early 1950s, narrated CBC-TV Vancouver productions Skidrow
in 1956 and The Heart of the Thing in 1962 and hosted meditation interludes on
CFMI-FM Vancouver in the 1970s. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January
14, 2006 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Kerrisdale Anglican Church at 37th & Larch in

- 12/30/05 - Legendary KJR, KOL and KYYX-FM Seattle
DJ Lan Roberts died this morning in Bonham TX from complications associated with lung
cancer. Following his Seattle gigs, he jocked in Honolulu, Taipei and San
Francisco. He is survived by his daughter Jodi Lipford Smith and her husband Stan,
who host mornings at Miss 98 WWMS-FM 97.5

- 12/03/05 - Canadian broadcast pioneer Allan
Waters died early this morning in hospital in Toronto. Waters, the founder of
CHUM Ltd. was 84. He began his career in 1954 with the purchase of CHUM radio in
Toronto, which grew to 33 radio, 12 TV and 21 specialty channels, including CFUN, CKST,
CHQM-FM and CKVU-TV Vancouver and CFAX, CHBE-FM and CIVI-TV Victoria. The

Multivan Broadcast Corporation for an extension of the time limit to Dec. 3, 2006 to start
operation of its new Victoria rebroadcaster of CHNM-TV/42
Vancouver. The new Victoria station is to operate on channel 29 with an ERP of 3300

94.9 Seattle is taking HD radio multicasting to new levels by running three HD program
streams, all of them talk programming. This is in addition to the station's regular
analog FM signal. On multicasting-ready HD radios, the streams read out as KUOW-HD1,
KUOW-HD2 or KUOW-HD3.

Edwards, aka Alberta Slim died November 25th in
Surrey BC at the age of 95. He performed at stations in Regina and Saskatoon in the

- 11/25/05 - Reports have been received that
newscasters Mike Cleaver and Drew Snider have been released from Vancouver market CKNW AM 980. Cleaver had anchored news at prominent
stations such as CHUM, CFRB and CFTR in Toronto prior to starting with 'NW in 2001.
Snider had hosted and anchored at several stations in western Canada, including Vancouver
and Victoria, before joining the station in 2004.

Talk KPTK AM 1090 to its HD-2 channel. The stations join KPLU-FM 88.5 and KUOW-FM

- 10/24/05 - CBC Radio 3 personality Alexis Mazurin
died Thursday evening (October 20) in Vancouver at the age of 27. He had been
attending the annual Burning Man art festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert in early
September when he suffered a massive heart attack in his sleep. The Penticton BC
born Mazurin was rushed to hospital in Reno where he fell into a coma, then was
transferred to Vancouver's St. Paul's Hospital in mid-September. CBC

interest. Radio Revolution: The Rise & Fall of the Big 8, the history
of CKLW Windsor ON, which dominated the Detroit airwaves during the 1960s and 70s, was
aired in April 2004 on History Television Canada, but was unavailable to viewers south of
the border. The Gemini Award winning feature length documentary is now available on
DVD for shipment to both the U.S. and Canada at Radio Revolution DVD.

- 10/15/05 - The Vancouver Sun
(subscriber-only link to story) reports that Rafe
Mair's departure from CKBD AM 600 was mutual, and
due to the program no longer generating the revenue required to pay for itself. The
73 year old Mair's annual salary was over $200,000 and he will be paid until his contract
expires in August, 2006. He continues with editorials three times a week on
Vancouver market OMNI.10 CHNU-TV/66, but
plans to take a vacation, then find another radio position.

- 10/14/05 - Talk show host and former lawyer and
Social Credit MLA, Rafe Mair has left his program
at CKBD AM 600 Vancouver after two years with the
station. Mair was fired in the summer of 2003 from CKNW
AM 980 after 19 years in the host's seat because of accusations that he had been
harassing a female co-worker, using foul language and making critical comments about the
station's owner, Corus Entertainment. Global
Television reported Thursday that Mair's on-air ratings had plummeted by nearly 60 per
cent since he first went on the air at 600 AM.

99.9 Chilliwack, which repeats CBU-FM 105.7 Vancouver, began regular CBC Radio Two
service to Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley today at 6 a.m. This follows over seven
weeks of test programming and non-stop classical music from the Galaxie network, due to
the now resolved CBC lockout. The station operates with 790 watts at 218.4 meters

- 10/10/05 - On November 29, legendary band leader Dal Richards will receive Vancouver's highest
honor, the Freedom of the City Award. The 87 year old Order of Canada
and Order of B.C. award winner has played every New Years Eve in the city since

His career began in radio in 1957 at age 17 in Stratford ON. He moved to television
as the late evening news anchor at CFTO-TV Toronto in the late 1960s, becoming the west
coast correspondent for CTV National news in 1974. His 6 p.m. show is the most
watched English language newscast in Canada. Parsons is also vice-president of news
and public affairs at the station.

93.3 Port Alberni officially signed on at 9:33 a.m. Friday, September 2 as The

authorization April 18, 2005 to move to FM with simulcasting on its old AM 1240
position for a period of three months.

- 09/02/05 - After 28 years on local airwaves, the
final edition of Sports Page will air tonight at 11 on CH CHEK-TV/6 Victoria. The popular
program began on CKVU-TV/10 (now called Citytv)
Vancouver when it was an independent local station operating on UHF channel 21. The
show moved to CH in September 2001 following ownership and network shuffles at
several Vancouver area TV stations. Over the years it was hosted by some of the best
known local and national sportscasters including Paul Carson, Craig MacEwen, Barry
MacDonald, Blake Price, Dave Randorf, John Shorthouse and Don Taylor.

awards for 2005. He will continue as the PA announcer at Vancouver Canucks home
games. This news follows the announcement Friday that Dr. Sport, Greg

Vancouver, a position he has held since the early 1990s. Douglas was the Canucks PR

that STAR 101.5 KPLZ-FM Seattle has unveiled
a plan to put more emphasis on personalities, local content, and contesting to protect the
station "from satellite competitors". Current afternoon host Curt Cruze
and longtime morning personality Corine McKenzie will team up on afternoon drive starting
March 14th and the John Tesh radio show will debut
evenings starting March 28th. Additional traffic reporters and contests also will be
added.

in a fire at his Lake City home in late January, was once was named "the best voice

radio communautaire Victoria to start a French-language FM community radio station in

12 noon in Parksville/Qualicum Beach, as Island
Radio Ltd. has dropped its simulcast of The Wave CKWV-FM 102.3 Nanaimo. The old AM call
letters CHPQ have been resurrected as CHPQ-FM 99.9 with an adult standards format.

Globalmedia, and CTV has won the television rights for the 2010 Winter Olympics in

- 02/07/05 - A $1000 reward has been offered for
information leading to the return of a Siberian Husky, missing in the Port Angeles area
since December 13. The red and white dog answers to the name of Ernie,
weighs about 80 pounds and has blue eyes. He is thought to have been picked up by a
broadcast transmission tower worker sometime after December 13 near Port Angeles.

statement has been released saying the impact of the planned KRKO AM 1380 Everett transmission towers south of
Snohomish is primarily aesthetic. KRKO GM Andy Skotdal says he hopes the project to

Limited is one of several applicants vying for a multicultural/multi-ethnic station in
the Vancouver market. CHUM is pitching a modern global format, a collage of
different types of popular music from Canada and around the world, to operate on 93.1 MHz.
If approved, the station will be known as The Planet, Vancouvers
Modern Global Music Station with call letters CKMG-FM. Applications will be heard by

- 01/19/05 - Central Island Broadcasting Ltd. has
changed its corporate name to Island Radio Ltd.
President and GM Paul Larsen announced that with expansion north and west on Vancouver
Island, 'Central Island' no longer reflected the company's geographic presence.

- 01/14/05 - Long time radio personality, talk show
host and PD Don Porter died Monday, January 10 in Portland at the age of 83. Don was
born in Victoria, but worked at stations in several cities on both sides of the border
including KGW, KXL and KEX Portland. He was a talk show host at CKWX and newsman at
CHQM in Vancouver in the early 1970s before heading back to Portland as talk show host at
KPOJ. Additionally, he voiced numerous national radio and TV commercials for the
Government of Canada. Funeral arrangements are pending.
