  • 12/31/03 - After yesterday's report in Canada's National Post, the CBC is defending its veteran news anchor, Peter Mansbridge, denying that an exhaustive study found viewers believe the public broadcaster has a political bias.  Tim Naumetz, CanWest News
  • 12/30/03 - An internal 1000 page CBC study shows Canadian viewers suspect the government-owned broadcasting corporation is politically biased, and see its national TV newscast as "stuffy and condescending" with too many "pontificating" experts discussing politics.   Tim Naumetz, CanWest News 
  • 12/26/03 - At 12 noon, CKVX-FM 104.9 Vancouver (and its Abbotsford and Chilliwack transmitters) became Clear FM Vancouver's Clear Music Choice, a mix of light jazz and blues vocals such as Norah Jones, who was the first artist played with Don't Know Why.
  • 12/25/03 - Classic alternative, classic alternative for Seattle.  Although previously posted on the Marconi Show website home page that the program is moving to The Buzz KQBZ-FM 100.7, Entercom management says nothing is definite yet.  Bill Virgin's Radio Beat, The P-I
  • 12/24/03 - KHCV-DT/44 Seattle has now signed on, leaving KWDK-DT/42 Tacoma as the only digital TV station in the Seattle market yet to go on air.
  • 12/22/03 - R&R reports that KYPT-FM 96.5 Seattle, which flipped to Classic Alternative Friday (12/19) and adopted the slogan K-ROCK, will change call letters to KRQI-FM.  The change will be shown on NORTHWEST BROADCASTERS FM Stations page as soon as it is officially listed at the FCC website.
  • 12/20/03 - Murdock Hunter & Alice did their last morning show at Mix 92.5 KLSY-FM Seattle yesterday (12/19).  The station's website has dropped mention of the trio, but has yet to indicate if afternoon duo Mitch and Lisa are moving to the morning slot.   According to Bill Virgin's Radio Beat of October 2, 2003, nogotiations by Murdock Hunter & Alice may...or may not have reached an impasse at that time.
  • 12/19/03 - KYPT-FM 96.5 Seattle has flipped to a Classic Alternative format with slogan K-ROCK.  The change came at 5 p.m., just 29 hours after The End KNDD-FM 107.7 made a similar move.  At this point no call letter change has been made.
  • 12/19/03 - The CRTC has approved application by the British Columbia Institute of Technology Radio Society for a new instructional campus station in Burnaby.  The new FM station will operate with an effective radiated power of 12 watts at 107.9 MHz.  CFML-FM has been providing service to the campus for a number of years via carrier current and is fed on cable in the Greater Vancouver area.   CRTC Decision
  • 12/19/03 - The wrangling continues between KRKO AM 1380 Everett and environmentalists over proposed new transmission towers in the Snohomish River Valley.   The Snohomish County Planning and Development Department has released a draft environmental impact statement declaring the antennas would adversely affect the landscape views of about eight residents.  Jennifer Warnick, Heraldnet
  • 12/18/03 - As of noon today The End KNDD-FM 107.7 Seattle has tweaked its format to Classic Alternative.  The Marconi Show, which began less than two months ago, is moving to The Buzz KQBZ-FM 100.7, as The End runs without DJs for the immediate future.
  • 12/18/03 - Effective January 1, Jennifer Cador takes over as News and Sports Director of CFAX AM 1070 and B107.3 CHBE-FM Victoria.  She replaces Don Lawson, who returns to Edmonton.

  • 12/18/03 - Bill Mohler, interim President and CEO of KCTS-TV/9 Seattle has been named to the positions permanently.  D. Parvaz, The P-I
  • 12/16/03 - Application to the CRTC by Trinity Lutheran Church for a licence to operate a very low-power religious FM station in Abbotsford has been withdrawn from hearings scheduled for next January 12 at Gatineau, Quebec.  The Commission states that it has not been advised by the Department of Industry that the application is technically feasible.  CRTC notice
  • 12/15/03 - Long-time Vancouver morning host Monty McFarlane died this morning in North Vancouver after a lengthy illness.  He was 78.  McFarlane started his broadcast career at CBW Winnipeg in 1946.  He moved to Vancouver in 1949 and became one of the city's most entertaining radio personalities, with positions at CKMO, CFUN and CKLG, before hosting mornings at CJOR for over a decade, starting in the late sixties.  He was a member of the B.C.   • 12/15/03 - CBUT-TV/2 Vancouver has a birthday tomorrow.   Western Canada's first TV station officially signed on December 16, 1953.   Apparently CBC has no on-air celebrations scheduled.
  • 12/13/03 - The Ocean CIOC-FM 98.5 Victoria has moved to an all-Christmas format as of 12 noon Dec. 12.
  • 12/11/03 - Like Vancouver, Victoria listeners also edge a music station, The Q! CKKQ-FM 100.3 Victoria into first place with a 13.5 share above perennial number one news/talk CFAX AM 1070 with 13.4.  Puget Sound Radio
  • 12/11/03 - Shane Foxman becomes Sports Director/sports anchor effective immediately.  Roger Petersen will join Simi Sara as co-anchor on CityPulse News at 6 starting January 19, as Citytv Vancouver CKVU-TV/10 makes some news changes.  Broadcast Dialogue
  • 12/10/03 - Classic hits JACK FM CKLG-FM 96.9 has eked out first place over news/talk/sports CKNW AM 980 in the Fall 2003 12+ Vancouver BBM radio ratings with a 13.4 share over 'NW's 13.3.  Adult contemporary QM/FM CHQM-FM 103.5 holds on to thrid place with an 8.9 share.  Full details from Puget Sound Radio
  • 12/09/03 - Jason Manning, one of the few survivors of the recent change at CKVX-FM 104.9 Vancouver to all Christmas, and likely to a totally new format at year end, will be moving to the midday slot at JACK-FM Toronto.  In Nanaimo, Matthew McBride is no longer General Manager of Central Island Broadcasting.   He is being replaced by Paul Larsen, current PD of Calgary's smooth jazz station The Breeze..
  • 12/06/03 - Veteran talk show host Joe Easingwood has signed a new three-year contract with CFAX AM 1070 Victoria.  He started with the station in 1981, hosting early afternoons and later moving to mid-mornings.  With currently over 40 years on-air in Victoria, the new contract will take him through 25 years on-air at CFAX.  Broadcaster Magazine
  • 12/04/03 - The new Vashon Island transmitter site of KJR AM 950 Seattle at 47-26-0 122-28-2 is causing complaints of poor signal strength to the southeast towards Puyallup.  The station transmits with a figure-eight pattern aimed northeast to Seattle and southwest towards Olympia.
  • 12/04/03 - Vancouver market oldies station CISL AM 650 is back in the news again, just a few days after switching to an "almost" all Christmas format.  A year and a week after starting as morning host, Doc Harris did his last show yesterday.  Doc Harris website
  • 12/03/03 - The CRTC has approved application by Multivan Broadcast Corporation to operate a new TV transmitter in Victoria to rebroadcast the signal of its Vancouver station Channel M CHNM-TV/42.  The new station will operate on channel 29 with an average effective radiated power of 3,300 watts.  CRTC Decision
  • 12/01/03 - The Beach CIBH-FM 88.5 Parksville moved to an all-Christmas format at 6 a.m. today.
  • 11/30/03 - CISL AM 650 Richmond became Christmas Hits 650 CISL as of 1 p.m. today.  Music includes yesterday's classics, novelty favorites, country greats and today's newest releases for the holiday season.  Specialty programming on the station continues.
  • 11/30/03 - Seattle Times music critic Melinda Bargreen takes a behind-the-scenes look at Bryan Lowe, responsible for audio streaming at KING-FM 98.1 Seattle, considered by Arbitron as one of the world's top five classical stations.  Times story
  • 11/27/03 - The Bay KBAI AM 930 Bellingham has moved to an all-Christmas format.
  • 11/27/03 - Delivery of FM stations may disappear from Seattle cable systems.  The second Seattle station, KYCW AM 1090 will go all-Christmas starting tomorrow.  Bill Virgin's Radio Beat, The P-I  (Editors note: Shaw Cable in Vancouver carries all local FM and AM stations, two Victoria FM stations and 12 Seattle area FMs - a total of 43.)
  • 11/22/03 - Warm KRWM-FM 106.9 Bremerton has flipped to an all-Christmas format.
  • 11/22/03 - Decided July 22, 2003, but only just publicly released, the British Columbia Regional Panel of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) has ruled that the February 14, 2003 broadcast of the Tom Leykis Show on MOJO Radio CHMJ AM 730 Vancouver violated clauses in the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Code of Ethics and Sex-Role Portrayal Code.  The daily program was deleted from the station in early June.  Broadcaster Magazine  CBSC Decision   (Note: call letters are transposed in first paragraph of CBSC decision.)
  • 11/20/03 - Rogers Radio VP Paul Fisher hints that CKVX-FM 104.9 Vancouver (also Chilliwack/Abbotsford) could return to its alt/new rock format after Christmas.   Morning hosts Robin Farrell and Jason Manning are scheduled to return next Monday, spinning Christmas music and commercials.  Broadcaster Magazine

  • 11/19/03 - As of 11:30 a.m. today, CKVX-FM 104.9 Vancouver has become Christmas FM, which will continue until the end of December.  At that time, a new format is expected.  Air staff Jeff Leake, Cory Price & Danger are no longer with the station.
  • 11/15/03 - Radio revenue gains were more than offset by increased expenses for Mariners broadcasts, as Seattle-based Fisher Communications Inc. reports wider third quarter loss.  Seattle P-I 
  • 11/14/03 - The FCC has accepted for filing, application to change the city of license of KZIZ AM 1560 Sumner to Pacific.  Power will be 5 kW day, 3.3 kW critical hours and 2.4 kW night at 47-14-10 122-13-44
  • 11/10/03 - Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) is likely to come to Victoria in the near future.  OK Radio Group has applied for DAB stations to simulcast the signals of CJZN-FM and CKKQ-FM.  Both will operate on digital channel 12.  CJZN-FM application   CKKQ-FM application  In addition, Trinity Lutheran Church has applied to operate a very low powered (1.1 watts) religious station in Abbotsford on 88.3 MHz.  CRTC application   The CRTC will hear the applications at Gatineau QC starting on January 12, 2004.   CRTC Notice of Public Hearing

  • 11/05/03 - X104 KMIH-FM 104.5 Mercer Island GM, Nick De Vogel announces that the station has received an upgraded license from the FCC to reflect the correction of site coordinates and licensed ERP, which is now officially 30 watts.  HAAT is 69 meters at 47-34-21 122-13-5.
  • 11/04/03 - After 11 years on Vancouver Island, The Q CKKQ-FM 100.3 Victoria PD Rick Everett will be leaving the station.  Effective November 24, he becomes Station Manager at the new Red River College station, CKIC-FM 92.9 Winnipeg, which is set to sign on in the new year.  "The chance to launch and operate a radio station in my hometown, one that plays many different styles of music and helps prepare future broadcasters for life in the 'real world' is simply a dream come true for me," said Everett.  His last day at The Q is November 14.
  • 10/30/03 - After a hiatus on the airwaves of just over three months, Larry and Willy return Monday morning, November 3 on JACKfm CKLG-FM 96.9 Vancouver.
  • 10/30/03 - The FCC has granted voluntary assignment of license for KVAC AM 1490 and KLLM-FM 103.9 Forks from Alco Services Inc. to First Broadcasting Investment Partners, LLC.
  • 10/28/03 - Engineers have begun testing signals for KJR AM 950 Seattle from the KGNW AM 820 Burien-Seattle diplexed transmitter site on Vashon Island.  Since its power increase to 50 kW and transmitter move to Tacoma in May 2001, KJR's coverage in Seattle has not met expectations.  Application to move the transmitter site again was made to the FCC in November 2001.  The 50 kW signal from Vashon at 47-26-00 122-28-2 will be a figure-eight pattern aimed northeast to Seattle and southwest towards Olympia. 
  • 10/25/03 - Broadcaster Ray Dagg died Friday morning at the age of 70.  He had been president of the Vancouver-based Western Information Network and sat on the B.C.   • 10/23/03 - The FCC has accepted for filing, application by Jodesha Broadcasting Inc. for an upgrade of KJET-FM 105.7 from C2 to C1, with 58 kW at 158 meters HAAT located at 46-56-30 123-47-7.  A city of license change from South Bend to Raymond was previously approved.  FCC Info
  • 10/23/03 - H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, which terrorized listeners everywhere, aired 65 years ago.  It was heard locally on KIRO and KVI Seattle.  Bill Virgin's Radio Beat, The P-I
  • 10/22/03 - Bob Hall passed away Tuesday, October 21 at the age of 73.  He started his broadcast career at CJAV Port Alberni in 1949.  He moved to CHWK Chilliwack as assistant news director and on-air announcer in 1951.  In 1952 he became news and sports director of CKOV Kelowna, where he stayed until 1965.  That year, he made successful applications for radio licenses in Salmon Arm and Revelstoke.  In 1970, as Four Seasons Radio Ltd. he applied for the second AM license in Kelowna and obtained approval for CKIQ.  In the mid 1980s Four Seasons Radio purchased CJAT Trail and CKKC Nelson/Creston.  Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 26 at The Gathering Place in Salmon Arm.

  • 10/08/03 - All Access Music Group reports that Marconi, Tiny and Niki J, aka The Marconi Show will debut mornings at The End KNDD-FM 107.7 Seattle starting October 20.  The show replaces Andy Savage, who exited at the end of September.  It moves from afternoons at sister station KNRK-FM 94.7 Portland
  • 10/07/03 - Israel 'Izzy' Asper, founder and chairman of CanWest Global Communications Corp., has died at age 71 in Winnipeg.  Global owns broadcast and print media in Canada and internationally, and locally Global BC CHAN-TV/8 Vancouver, CH CHEK-TV/6 Victoria, the Vancouver Sun and Province and regional newspapers.  canada.com

  • 09/24/03 - The FCC has issued a construction permit to increase the power of KAYO-FM 99.3 Elma to 41 kW at 638 meters HAAT with a transmitter move to 47-19-11 123-20-42.
  • 09/24/03 - Jeff Rechner temporarily slides into a.m. drive at JACKfm CKLG-FM 96.9 Vancouver, until the arrival of Larry and Willy.  Current morning host Rob Christie, along with Xfm CKVX-FM 104.9 Vancouver morning man Rob Pepper have been "robbed" to do a.m. and p.m. drive respectively at JACKfm CISS-FM 92.5 Toronto.  News release

  • 09/17/03 - Effective September 18, Seattle-based Fisher Communications will resume trading under stock symbol FSCI on the Nasdaq National Market, after meeting necessary filing requirements.   Fisher release

  • 09/16/03 - NORTHWEST BROADCASTERS is starting to list the new LP-FM stations on the FM Stations page.  Recent additions to western Washington include: KYAO-LP 100.1 Ocean Shores, 50's and 60's Oldies and Hit Comedy with Ocean Shores only local weather, on air Jan. 2003; KGHO-LP 94.3 (formerly KGHQ-LP) Aberdeen, same oldies format as heard on KGHO AM 920, on air since June; and KXPB-LP 89.1 Pacific Beach just signed on for testing Sept. 14 with a variety format of Blues, Oldies and Live Music from North Beach.  
  • 09/16/03 - Legendary Vancouver DJ Red Robinson reminisces with audio clips of interviews with Johnny Cash, who died September 12 at the age of 71.  Red Robinson website

  • 09/15/03 - The CRTC has denied application for a commercial low-powered FM station to serve Port Alberni.  CRTC decision
  • 09/13/03 - Myron Balagno passed away September 2 at the age of 73.  He started radio as an announcer at CJVI Victoria in 1949, moving to CJOR Vancouver the following year.  In 1954 he moved to CKMO Vancouver and hosted The Man Under the Clock feature from Birks corner.  He aired the program changing the call letters from CKMO to CFUN on September 1, 1954.  canada.com obituary  Vancouver Broadcasters photo and biography.
  • 09/11/03 - After six years, Andy Savage exits as morning host of The End KNDD-FM 107.7 Seattle at the end of the month.  Steve Knight returns to KIRO AM 710 after two years with CBS News New York.  Bill Virgin's Radio Beat, The P-I
  • 09/10/03 - Ronn Grimster, a.k.a. The Beard, passed away yesterday afternoon (09-09) at McMaster Hospital in Hamilton, ON just three days prior to his 79th birthday.  Ronn was well known in the Vancouver area as a CFUN Good Guy in the early 1960s.  He went on to spend over a decade, first as a DJ, then newsman at CHFI-FM Toronto during the 70s and 80s.  Toronto Star obituary  Vancouver Broadcaster photo and biography
  • 09/05/03 - Twenty years on air at one radio station is a rarity these days, but Bruce Murdoch, morning co-host at Mix 92.5 KLSY-FM Seattle has achieved it.  He's been there since it became Classy in 1983.  Meanwhile, The End KNDD-FM 107.7 Seattle is running jockless this weekend.
  • 09/05/03 - CBC Vancouver has now switched its test from 104.1 to 106.3, as noted in item 08/29/03 below.
  • 08/29/03 - As of today, Mountain FM CISQ 107.1/CISW 102.1 Squamish/Whistler has moved to a Hot AC format with Hits of the 80s, 90s and Today.   Wayne Deschover is no longer hosting mornings and scouting is on for a new host.  GM/PD Ken Geiger has annnounced that there will be a more local approach in the upcoming weeks.
  • 08/29/03 - CBC Vancouver is testing signals on 104.1 and 106.3 from its Mount Seymour transmitter site.  These frequencies are first adjacents to the Orcas Island transmitters on 104.3 and 106.5.  Announcements are being made to call 1-800-663-9219 if interference is being experienced with other stations.  Tests are being conducted to try and find a useable frequency for Aboriginal Voices Radio, which has received the nod from the CRTC for a new station, but has yet to find a viable FM frequency in the crowded Vancouver spectrum.  104.1 is currently being tested, with tests on 106.3 expected to begin next week.
  • 08/27/03 - The 6 p.m. Citypulse news  on Citytv CKVU-TV/10 Vancouver will feature new co-hosts Simi Sara and Shane Foxman, joined by outspoken broadcaster Rafe Mair starting Monday, September 15th.  Rafe is to make appearances on the program three times a week.
  • 08/22/03 - Fairly elaborate on-air shuffles at News 1130 CKWX AM 1130 Vancouver, as Executive Editor George Gordon joins Kenya Anderson as morning co-anchor.  He also becomes Managing Editor and retains Program Director duties.  Andrew Dawson becomes political affairs specialist and Dianne Newman moves into middays, joining Brian Brenn.  Jim Bennie moves into p.m. drive with Joanna Mileos.  Changes are effective Sept. 2nd.
  • 08/21/03 - The CRTC will hold public hearings October 20th at Gatineau, Quebec on a number of applications including one by BCIT Radio Society in Burnaby for a 20-watt non-directional station on 107.9 MHz.  The station has been operating on campus by carrier current and fed on Vancouver area cable systems for over twenty years.  CRTC info
  • 08/21/03 - The ratings embargo appears to be lifted, at least temporarily, in the Seattle-Tacoma area as Summer '03 P1 trends have been released by Arbitron.  R&R Online
  • 08/21/03 - 20-year veteran of the Puget Sound news market, Tony Ventrella will move from morning news anchor to weekend sports and field anchor at KCPQ-TV/13.   Pamela Sitt, Seattle Times
  • 08/21/03 - The FCC is forming a task force to determine whether broadcasters should be compelled to produce more local news and programming.  It also intends to speed up the licensing of low-powered FM stations.  Seattle Times
  • 08/17/03 - KPLU-FM 88.5 Tacoma turned on a new translator this afternoon serving Aberdeen/Hoquiam, with a signal that reaches Ocean Shores and Westport.   The new translator is 100.9 MHz, with power, height and antenna improvements, replacing the previous one at 90.1.
  • 08/14/03 - Following the death of Cynthia Doyon last week, KEXP-FM 90.3 Seattle afternoon host Amanda Wilde has been named as fill-in on The Swing Years and Beyond Saturday nights on KUOW-FM 94.9.   Also on KUOW, the legendary Wailers appear next Wednesday at 8 p.m.  Bill Virgin's Radio Beat, The P-I
  • 08/13/03 - Wholesale changes at Z95.3 CKZZ-FM Vancouver as AMD Darren B. Lamb, midday host Erin Wilde and weekend/CISL AM 650 evening jock Chris Kalhoon have left the station.  Buzz Bishop moves from PMD to AMD and will be joined by Nat Hunter from Toronto.  Kelly Grant moves from evenings to middays.  Andy Rogers, former morning host in London, ON assumes p.m. drive duties and Kid Carson from Toronto moves to evenings.  Tom Harrison and Joe Leary, The Province
  • 08/10/03 - A few changes at KRKO AM 1380 Everett, as the station drops KIRO/7 Eyewitness News and expands Jeff Aaron's program to 6 p.m.  The new station name is NorthSound 1380.
  • 08/08/03 - Bill Good moves into the 8:30-noon slot previously vacated by Rafe Mair at CKNW AM 980 Vancouver starting Monday morning, with Jennifer Mather moving into the 12:30-3 p.m. position beginning August 25.   Meanwhile, Bob Saye takes over a.m. drive duties at CKBD AM 600 Vancouver August 18, after it was announced that morning host Tom Jeffries had left the station.

  • 07/13/03 - John Murdoch (Murdo) Maclachlan died July 8 in North Vancouver at the age of 93.   Murdo moved to Chilliwack from Manitoba in 1925 and became part owner of CHWK until the late 1950s.  He also was involved with the start-up of the broadcasting program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Burnaby and had served on the executive of the Board of Broadcast Governors.  A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Henderson's Funeral Home in Chilliwack at 1:30 pm Saturday, July 19.  Obituary

  • 06/04/03 - CKBD AM 600 Vancouver returned to AM stereo Monday at 8 p.m.  Meanwhile, good news for C-QUAM AM stereo fans is the recent ruling by the National Radio Systems Committee (NRSC) subcommittee setting In Band On Channel (IBOC) AM receiver standards, that the process be shelved until better quality audio can be achieved.  IBOC and C-QUAM cannot exist on the same transmitted signal.

  • 06/02/03 - Last week some problems occurred with the AM stereo C-QUAM generator at CKBD AM 600 Vancouver.  After repairs, further alignment was necessary, so the station was put into mono mode for a few days.   Engineer Dan Roach reports that stereo will return in the next day or two and that the station will continue to broadcast in AM stereo well into the future.

  • 04/28/03 - In order to provide listeners with a consistent signal both day and night, KIXI AM 880 Seattle now is simulcasting on the subcarrier, known also as Subsidiary Communications Authority or SCA, of sister station KWJZ-FM 98.9.   PD Bob Brooks advises that they are getting "Great results with a small portable test radio. The signal is clear from Everett to Olympia and east to North Bend, west to Bremerton and beyond".  Radios capable of receiving the SCA signal are required, and are being sold on KIXI's website.

  • 04/21/03 - CJMP-FM 90.1 Powell River was supposed to sign on this Tuesday.  However, vandals got up on the studio roof Sunday night and cut the antenna line and a set of guy wires, toppling and destroying the new tower.  The damage is a big disappointment to the many volunteers who helped with the project.  Engineer Kam Abbott reports that work on repairing the damage will start tomorrow.  Studio and tower construction photos
  • 04/10/03 - Program Director of stations KJRB AM Spokane and KJR AM Seattle during the 70s, Steve West received the highest honor from the Puget Sound Radio Broadcasters Association as the 'Crystal Soundie' recipient at the 18th annual Soundies Awards at Seattle's Red Lion Wednesday night.  A last-minute health issue impeded his appearance.   • 04/07/03 - Inside Radio reports engineer Leonard Kahn is claiming his Cam-D system - compatible AM Digital, will "restore AM broadcasting to 15 KHz stereo fidelity by use of digital processing"He wants the FCC to evaluate Cam-D versus iBiquity's digital AM scheme.   Compatible means it should work with every existing AM radio.  Stations in six states are to test the system.
  • 04/01/03 - Today marks the 80th anniversary of CKWX AM 1130 Vancouver.  After on air "testing", Arthur J. "Sparks" Holstead and William Hanlon were granted a licence to operate 10 watt CFDC in Nanaimo on April 1, 1923.  In 1927 the station moved to Vancouver, and then changed call letters to CKWX.  On August 15, 1957 CKWX became Vancouver's first 50,000 watt station on a new clear channel frequency of 1130 kHz.  After programming Top 40 in the late 50s and early 60s, CKWX moved to MOR/talk, becoming "Supercountry" in March 1973.  In February 1996, it adopted its current programming of 24 hour news, as "News 1130"
  • 03/31/03 - University of British Columbia campus station CITR-FM 101.9 Vancouver celebrates 21 years on air April 1.  The station, which was conceived in 1937, and heard on campus by carrier current in 1964, signed on with 49 watts April 1, 1982.  A reunion is scheduled for Saturday May 10th at the Waldorf Hotel in Vancouver.  Reunion info

Victoria was honored at Canadian Music Week in Toronto on Feb. 28 with the Promotion of the Year award for its Little House on the Prairie promo in the fall of 2002, when the station gave away a house in Govan, SK. The location wasn't revealed until the end of the promo when five finalists were chosen to fly to Saskatchewan and try their keys in the door.  Winners received an all expense paid weekend in Regina including gambling at the local casino and a Saskatchewan Rough Riders football game.

In select cases, an Arbitron subscriber has asked that a market's ratings be "embargoed" from public view, most likely because a nonsubscriber is using those numbers without permission or license. R&R is a licensee of Arbitron rating and is only permitted to publish those numbers which are not under embargo. We will begin publishing ratings for that market as soon as the embargo is lifted."   • 01/22/03 - Student-run Internet radio station RainyDawg has been launched by the University of Washington as an adjunct to its professionally-run stations KEXP-FM 90.3 and KUOW-FM 94.9 Seattle.  RainyDawg operates live from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. with high and low speed streams in three formats.
  • 01/21/03 - Application by Pamplin Broadcasting for a construction permit to build a new AM station on 730 kHz in Hoquiam has been accepted for filing by the FCC.  The station will operate at 1 kW day and night from two towers at 46-57-24 123-48-29.

  • 01/17/03 - Pat Cardinal is the new Program Director at CKKS-FM 96.9 "JACK-FM" Vancouver, replacing outgoing Susan Davis.  He also continues as PD/GM of CKVX-FM 104.9 "XFM".

  • 01/13/03 - (Updated) Veteran DJ Jim O'Neal (James Joseph Peterson) passed away January 11 in Sparks, NV at the age of 54.  He did radio shows in Idaho, mornings at KGHO Hoquiam in 1971 and then KOL Seattle.  He also worked at KORL Honolulu, KEZY Anaheim and had been on air in Reno for the past several years.  Funeral service will be Thursday, January 16 at 5 p.m. at Walton's Funeral Home in Sparks.  Reno Gazette-Journal Obit  Info thanks to "Big Daddy" Dave McCormick

  • 01/06/03 - According to All Access Music Group, Rhona Raskin's "Rhona at Night" will re-appear on Vancouver airwaves January 12 at CKVX-FM 104.9 "XFM" Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m.  Meanwhile, it is reported that CKKS-FM 96.9 "JACK-FM" will be advising staff this Thursday on who stays and who goes after its recent format change.  Thanks to Mike Cherry and Brian Walks.
  • 01/06/03 - As of today, KNWX AM 1210 "The Business Station" Seattle has moved from AM 770.  Taking its place is KTTH AM 770 featuring talk show hosts Mike Siegel, Bill O'Reilly, Michael Medved, Michael Savage, and Laura Ingraham.
  • 01/03/03 - CHUM Limited's Citytv in Toronto will be the first to offer HDTV in Canada with a broadcast in that city on January 16.  Will CHUM stations in this area, CKVU-TV/10 "Citytv" Vancouver or CIVI-TV/53 "the New VI"  Victoria be next to sign on digital channels?  Victoria Times Colonist
