  • 12/27/02 - After running all Christmas music for about a month, "Vancouver's newest radio adventure" launched at 8 a.m. today as CKKS-FM 96.9 "KISS-FM" changed to "JACK FM - playing what we want", an apparent loose mix of classic hits.
  • 12/26/02 - Bill Virgin's Radio Beat, The P-I looks at changes in Seattle radio during 2002 and takes a look forward to 2003.
  • 12/25/02 - CKKS-FM 96.9 "KISS-FM" Vancouver is about to kiss it's call letters and current smooth hits format goodbye.  According to announcements made this evening, the change is scheduled for Friday, December 27 at 8 a.m. with further details to be announced December 26.  Thanks to Brian Walks

  • 12/20/02 - Aboriginal Voices Radio has applied to the CRTC to amend its proposed new Vancouver FM station by operating it on 92.3 Mhz with an ERP of 1200 watts.  CRTC Info   Additional application has been filed to add an AM transmitter at Abbotsford to operate at 850 kHz with a power of 10,000 watts.  CRTC Info
  • 12/19/02 - Clear Channel Communications has filed to acquire KFNK-FM 104.9 "Funky Monkey" Eatonville.  The asset purchase agreement is between current owner, Rock on Radio, LLC and Ackerley Media Group, Inc., owned by Clear Channel.  The purchase price is $4.5 million.

  • 12/18/02 - Former CISL AM 650/CKZZ-FM 95.3 "Z-95.3" Vancouver PD Rob Mise has accepted the position of Operations Manager with the new NewCap dance format station in Ottawa.  The station requires both on and off-air personnel.  Milkman Job Info
  • 12/18/02 - Another area station, CIOC-FM 98.5 "The Ocean" Victoria, has joined the all-Christmas ranks.  Now we have Christmas on the Ocean, Christmas on the Bay, Merry KISSmas, a WARM Christmas and a Classic Christmas.  Thanks to Brian Walks.
  • 12/18/02 - The CRTC has extended the time limit to August 31, 2003 for Multivan Broadcast Corporation to start its new multilingual ethnic television station in Vancouver.  The company has announced that broadcasting will begin next Spring.  CRTC info

  • 12/14/02 - Edie Hilliard, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Jones Radio Networks, Seattle has been named the Washington State Association of Broadcasters 2002 Broadcaster of the Year.  The award is presented to a broadcaster who has made a significant and lasting contribution to Washington broadcasting by virtue of a singular achievement or continuing service on behalf of the industry.  Thanks to John, Bcst Svs
  • 12/14/02 - Another Seattle TV news anchor is moving on.  KIRO-TV/7 is losing AP's 1996 "Reporter of the Year", Brad Goode to CNBC, where he will co-host "Wake Up Call".  Seattle P-I
  • 12/13/02 - The court has now lifted a publication ban on the name of the radio personality allegedly harassed by Rachel Marsden.  He is former CKLG and CFUN DJ Michael Morgan.  Lori Culbert, Vancouver Sun
  • 12/11/02 - Inside Radio reports that Goldman Sachs has received three bids for Seattle-based Fisher Communications, including radio and TV holdings.  Bids were reportedly due Monday, December 9 and Inside Radio speculates that Clear Channel and Disney might be interested in the group.  Fisher owns numerous properties, plus radio and TV, including KOMO-TV/4 Seattle.
  • 12/11/02 - The CRTC has approved application by the CBC to change the frequency of CBRU Squamish from 1260 kHz (Class LP) to 1270 (Class C) with a power increase from 40 watts day/night to 400d/200n.  CRTC Decision
  • 12/09/02 - It only turns 15 on December 12, but CKKQ-FM 100.3 "The Q" Victoria is putting on a spread befitting of stations 50 or even 75 years old. "Q-ography: 15 Years of the Island's Rock," starts at 6 p.m. this Friday and ends Sunday at midnight.  The three-times-repeated 18 hour broadcast, which will consume three 6 hour hi-fi VHS video tapes on SLP, will include actual broadcasts from The Q's past, including station personalities, past and present: Ed Bain, Mark Kriski, Cheryl Cox, Rick Everett, Kerry Campbell, Dave Farough and more.
  • 12/09/02 - Simon Fraser University in Burnaby has announced it will launch its community-based campus radio station on January 31, 2003.  CJSF-FM will operate on 90.1 MHz with 450 watts.  The station has been operating on campus for several years via carrier current and on Lower Mainland cable systems.  Thanks to Brian Walks
  • 12/05/02 - The original 1924 microphone from CFXC, Vancouver's third oldest continually operating radio station was donated Wednesday evening to SPARC, the Society for the Preservation of Antique Radio in Canada.  Veteran broadcaster Red Robinson accepted the donation at RPM, the Radio Performers Membership, a gathering of broadcasting professionals.  The mike was presented by Dorothy Allen and Fred Hume III, grandchildren of Fred Hume, original owner of CFXC, forerunner of CJOR, CHRX and currently CKBD AM 600.
  • 12/04/02 - Q-13 News at Ten anchor Sam Shane has accepted an anchor/reporter position with MSNBC.  He leaves KCPQ-TV/13 Thursday and starts his new position in January.  Thanks to Stephen Hyde
  • 12/03/03 - Major owner (Chairman & CEO) Mel Cooper of Seacoast Communications Group denies reports that Radio Stations CFAX AM 1070 & CHBE-FM 107.3 Victoria have been (or are being sold) to Newcap Broadcasting.  "Being one of the few independent radio companies left operating in a major market does lead to all kinds of speculation", says Cooper, who adds, "That's all it is, speculation".
  • 11/29/02 - Yet another station in the area joins the all Christmas bandwagon as CKKS-FM 96.9 "97 KISS-FM" becomes Vancouver's Holiday Music Station.  Thanks to Puget Sound Radio Guide

  • 11/28/02 - KBSG AM 1210 Auburn-Federal Way is headed into history on January 6th, as KNWX AM 770 Seattle moves call letters and business programming to that frequency.  The 770 position will retain the talk shows with call letters yet to be announced.  Two Seattle area stations move to all Christmas music, with KRWM-FM 106.9 already making the switch, and KYCW AM 1090 changing this week.  Bill Virgin's Radio Beat, The P-I
  • 11/27/02 - KMWS-FM 90.1 Mount Vernon is now on air following the move of KSVR-FM to 91.7.  The station is carrying the News network of Northwest Public Radio from KSVR's old transmitter facilities at Skagit Valley College.   Application has been filed with the FCC to move to 89.7 with a power increase from 100 watts to 2.25 kW.  Thanks to Larry Waldbillig
  • 11/27/02 - The FCC has approved application by KEXP-FM 90.3 Seattle to increase ERP from 720 watts to 3.3 kW with an HAAT increase from 162 to 211 meters.  Transmitter location remains the same.
  • 11/26/02 - Morning man Tom Lucas, his producer Craig Peters and midday host Jack Taylor have exited from CISL AM 650 Richmond.  Former PD Eric Samuels returns to his old position as well as Operations Manager.  Current PD Rob Mise will stay with Standard Broadcasting in a position yet to be announced.  Veteran Vancouver radio personality Doc Harris has been named the new AM Drive host effective tomorrow (11/27) with Gerry O'Day filling 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Thanks to Puget Sound Radio Guide
  • 11/26/02 - Bill Gallant, Director of Communications for the Archdiocese of Seattle and former KIRO and KING talk radio host, died this morning at Swedish Hospital.  He passed away at the age of 48 after a five year battle with colon cancer.  A vigil service will be held Monday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. at St. James Cathedral, with funeral the following day at 2 p.m.  Dave Birkland, Seattle Times

  • 11/25/02 - "Warm" KRWM-FM 106.9 Bremerton has moved to Continuous Christmas Favorites until Dec. 25.
  • 11/22/02 - CKKQ-FM 100.3 "The Q" Victoria is celebrating its 15th anniversary December 12, with flashbacks scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 13-15.  Anyone with station airchecks should contact PD Rick Everett at rick@theq.fm
  • 11/21/02 - The FCC has granted extension of time to complete construction of new digital TV facilities for KHCV-DT/44 Seattle and KWOG-DT/50 Bellevue.  Typically extensions are for six months.

  • 11/20/02 - The FCC has granted application for voluntary assignment of license for Korean language stations KSUH AM 1450 Puyallup and KWYZ AM 1230 Everett from Jean J. Suh to Radio Hankook, Inc.

  • 11/18/02 - Veteran broadcast engineer Max Bice, W7AEA, passed away over the weekend in a Tacoma-area Hospital at the age of 85.  He started in Radio in 1938 at KMO, Tacoma.   In 1948 he moved to the Tacoma News Tribune and built KTNT AM & FM and KTNT-TV.   He was an original founder and Chief Engineer emeritus of KGHP-FM, Gig Harbor.   A Celebration of life will be held next Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Gig Harbor Yacht Club.  Thanks to Keith Stiles
  • 11/15/02 - Belated word has been received about the passing of long-time broadcaster Philip Douglas (Phil) Barter at the age of 69.  He passed away at his retirement home in Qualicum Beach on Sept. 23 after a brief battle with cancer.  He made his radio start at age 14 at CJAV Port Alberni in 1948, later moving to CKDA Victoria as news editor.  Barter was the first person on air at the sign on of CHEK-TV/6 Victoria on December 1, 1956.  He was the weatherman for five years before joining CHAN-TV/8 Vancouver as news director in 1961.
  • 11/14/02 - Corus Entertainment has announced the appointment of Ross Winters as Director of Programming, Corus Radio across its 52 radio stations. He will manage programming of all Corus radio stations, with a particular focus on the top eight markets.  As current PD of CFOX-FM 99.3 and CFMI-FM 101.1, he will remain Vancouver-based and continue to oversee programming at the Corus Vancouver FM stations.  Corus Release

  • 11/13.02 - Brad Edwards, operations manager for Seacoast Communications, advises that a good quality 56k MP3 live audio feed has been added to the new CHBE-FM 107.3 "B107.3" Victoria website.
  • 11/12/02 - Skagit Valley Community Radio KSVR-FM Mount Vernon has signed on at its new 91.7 frequency, using the temporary call letters of KMWS-FM with transmitter on Little Mountain, one mile SE of the city.  The station will continue to simulcast on 90.1 for several weeks.  It then will be used by Northwest Public Radio as a Skagit Valley translator for its flagship Moscow, ID station KRFA-FM.  NWPR Info  Thanks to Larry Waldbillig
  • 11/11/02 - Seattle-based Fisher Communications issued a press release on Friday announcing that it had retained Goldman, Sachs & Co. as financial adviser "to assist in reviewing its strategic alternatives".  Although the release has been quoted by several news sources, very little has appeared in the Seattle press.  News Release
  • 11/07/02 - Vancouver-based marketing and public affairs consulting guru Dr. Angus Reid has been appointed Chair of the CKNW AM 980 Orphans' Fund.   The not-for-profit children's charity was originally launched in 1945.  Corus Entertainment release
  • 11/06/02 - A memorial service for broadcaster Bobby Simon will be held at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 3510 Rosedale Street, Gig Harbor on Friday, November 8.  Directions and further information at Robin Mitchell Associates website.

  • 11/01/02 - Although DAB Radios have appeared on Radio Shack Canada's website under code numbers 12-8101 and 12-8201, a check with Vancouver area stores indicates units will not be in stock for about two more weeks.  Both radios are pocket portables which include FM, with and without MP3 functions.  Radio Shack Info

  • 10/21/02 - A look at iBiquity digital radio, which was recently approved for use in the U.S. vs. the European Eureka 147 or DAB used in Canada, Europe and Asia on separate radio bands.  Seattle will be one of the first radio markets with iBiquity digital, which will be rolled out early in the new year.  Seattle Times
  • 10/18/02 - Seattle radio veterans Robin and Maynard have departed from KZOK-FM 102.5.  When contacted by Northwest Broadcasters, the duo would not confirm where they will re-surface.   More info to follow.
  • 10/17/02 - Spokane native and early radio personality Warren Durham has passed away at the age of 77.  In addition to his many years on the airwaves in Spokane, he hosted a radio program called "Big Band Classics," syndicated by Portland's NBG Radio Network, did Big Band broadcasts for CBS Radio in Los Angeles and worked in the media in Seattle in the early sixties.  Jim Kershner, Spokane Spokesman-Review

  • 10/12/02 - Two new programs begin on CBC Radio One, with the return of Shelagh Rogers to host "Sounds Like Canada", weekday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon starting Monday and Anna Maria Tremonti's "Currents" from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., premiering Nov. 18.  Michael Posner, The Globe and Mail
  • 10/10/02 - The FCC has selected in-band, on-channel (IBOC) as the technology for digital audio broadcasting for AM and FM radio broadcasters in the U.S.   Also, the Commission announced notification procedures that will allow AM (daytime operations only) and FM stations on a voluntary basis to begin interim digital transmissions immediately, using the IBOC systems developed by iBiquity Digital CorporationFCC Release   iBiquity Release
  • 10/10/02 - The FCC has granted application for a change in transmitter location of KUKN-FM 94.5 Kelso from 46-12-54 123-02-24 to 46-16-49 122-52-34 and increase in HAAT from 100 to 145 meters.  Power will drop from 6 to 3 kW from a directional antenna.
  • 10/08/02 - Broadcaster Jim Robson, "The Voice of the Vancouver Canucks", is one of ten to be inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.  Robson started his radio career at CJAV Port Alberni in 1952.  He commuted to CHUB Nanaimo to do live lacrosse in 1955 and moved to CKWX Vancouver in 1956, doing play-by-play for the WHL Canucks, BC Lions football and Mounties baseball. He covered over 2000 Canucks NHL games over a period of 24 years at CKNW, starting in 1970.  Awards will be presented at the CAB 76th annual convention to be held in Vancouver on October 21.  CAB News Release 
  • 10/03/02 - After over 10,000 emails and a myriad of phone calls to the CBC, the corporation has re-signed Hockey Night in Canada host Ron McLean for a four-year $450,000 annual deal.  HNIC has been running for 50 years and is viewed locally on CBUT/2 Vancouver.   Globe and Mail  CBC Release

  • 09/29/02 - Planet AAJ has withdrawn it's programming on CHKG-FM 96.1 Vancouver.  It included music from the Indian sub-continent and an all-night show featuring local DJs and music from local nightclubs in English.  The changes include "Caribbean Express" which now runs from 8-11 a.m., a Celtic program which airs Wed. from 6-7 a.m. and weekdays 1-2 p.m. and Chinese programming returns to an all-night schedule.  Further details  Thanks to Brian Walks 
  • 09/27/02 - The FCC has levied a $12,000 fine against KNDD-FM 107.7 "The End" Seattle for indecent material on the Andy Savage show, broadcast on May 30 and June 1, 2001.

  • 09/16/02 - Robert Hurst has been named president of CTV News.   He was Senior Vice-President and General Manager of CIVT-TV/32 "BC CTV" Vancouver, where he re-launched the station as a CTV affiliate.   Hurst will remain in Vancouver until November.  Broadcaster Magazine
  • 09/14/02 - Robin Mitchell advises that he has has added 1959 photos of Red Robinson at KGW in Portland on his RMA website plus extensive 1966-1969 audio clips of KOL Seattle.
  • 09/11/02 - CKBD AM 600 Vancouver has returned in full AM stereo.  The station had problems with its stereo generator early last week.   Info thanks Ian Procyk and engineer Dan Roach.
  • 09/10/02 - KJET-FM 105.7 South Bend has flipped from oldies to AC with ABC's Radio's Best Hits Best Variety satellite service, identifying as "105-7 The Jet".  Thanks to Stephen Hyde
  • 09/10/02 - Nationally syndicated Seattle broadcaster Michael Medved, who was cut from KVI AM 570 at the end of August, will re-surface live on KNWX AM 770 next January 2 from noon to three daily.   The delay is due to a non-compete clause in his previous contract.  Medved website info  Seattle P-I story
  • 09/10/02 - Seattle area consumers will be among the first to experience IBOC "HD Radio" this Friday Sept. 13, as KBKS-FM 106.1 hosts a demo at the Good Guys store at 601 106th Avenue, NE in Bellevue.  Ibiquity info
  • 09/09/02 - The CRTC has approved application for a low power developmental community FM station in Powell River.  The station will operate at 90.1 MHz with an effective radiated power of 3.6 watts.  CRTC Info
  • 09/07/02 - Cashman cashes out, while Slocum and Factor factor in at KOMO AM 1000 Seattle, as the station leans heavily on news, traffic and weather starting Monday.  Seattle P-I
  • 09/06/02 - The CBC-TV Fiftieth Anniversary VIA Rail Train will be on display at 1150 Station Street in Vancouver from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Sept. 7 before journeying accross Canada. The next stop in the tour is the Lorne Street Station in Kamloops from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday Sept. 8.  The train is travelling coast-to-coast displaying fifty years of CBC-TV history, with the final stop in Halifax on Oct. 5.  Thanks to Brian Walks.
  • 09/06/02 - Station manager Guy Dickinson advises that KMIH-FM 104.5 "X-104" Mercer Island has done a complete revamp of its Friday night/Saturday morning programming with a series of Dance/House/Jungle/Euro shows from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. with EuroBeat, The Funktion!, 360 BPM and JungleZone.   Details are on their website.
  • 09/05/02 - CBUX-FM 90.9 Vancouver signed on this morning with a continuous mix of classical and jazz.  Network programming from La Chaîne culturelle will begin Sept. 6, with full regular programming to start Sept. 22.

  • 08/08/02 - When "Mr. Traffic" Paul Brendle suggested an alternative route to bypass a bottleneck, that route would soon back up because of the number of people listening.   • 08/08/02 - Retired Seattle helicopter pilot/traffic reporter Paul Brendle died Tuesday night, just an hour before his 56th birthday. The King County Medical Examiner's Office says he died from carbon monoxide inhalation.  He was a traffic reporter for KIRO AM 710 from 1978 to 1997.  A spokesman for the family says there are no other details on his death available at this time.

  • 08/02/02 - Another counterproposal with the FCC has KDUX-FM 104.7 Aberdeen moving down one channel to 104.5 with relocation to Shoreline, WA.  As with the item below, KAFE-FM 104.3 Bellingham would move down to 104.1 with the same protection for the Canadian vacant allotments, and a frequency change for KLLM-FM 103.9 Forks, WA to 95.9.  Also urged is a frequency change for KXXK-FM 95.3 Hoquiam to 104.7 and a new vacant allotment of 95.3 in Aberdeen.  There would also be changes to numerous other stations in southwest Washington and northern Oregon as a result of these or other changes as outlined in the item below.
  • 08/01/02 - In an apparent eleventh hour turnaround, Mid-Columbia Broadcasting Inc. has filed a counterproposal with the FCC to change its previously proposed city of license for KMCQ-FM 104.5 The Dalles, OR from Covington, WA to Kent, WA.  In order to facilitate this change, KAFE-FM 104.3 Bellingham would move to 104.1 with no change of facilities and KLLM-FM 103.9 Forks would move to 105.5 with a license modification.  Changes to current vacant allotments would have to be made in Powell River, Campbell River and Bralorne, BC with the agreement of Industry Canada, otherwise KAFE-FM would have to operate with a directional antenna. The number of people in the KMCQ-FM 1 mV/m contour would increase from 92,556 to 2,963,440. 
  • 07/31/02 - KIXI AM 880 Seattle is adding the syndicated NBG Radio Network program Elvis Only, hosted by veteran announcer and Elvis expert Jay Gordon.   KIXI Program Director Bob Brooks advises that the show will air weekly at 10 p.m., starting Saturday, August 17.  The program is significant in that is offering a special commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Elvis' death on August 16th.

  • 07/19/02 - Ron Diotte, CE of KSTW-TV/11 Tacoma further reports that the station's low power antenna is side mounted, using a cardiod pattern aimed south towards Tacoma.  Intention is to replace the top mount NTSC antenna, currently not in use, with a new combination VHF/UHF full power antenna next summer.  KSTW-DT/36 will then be at the FCC assigned power of 850kw at 234 meters HAAT.

  • 06/24/02 - CJNW AM 730 Vancouver now has been off the air for a week and a half.  It's interesting to note that the station's modern rock stunting is still being carried at FM 94.7 on Greater Vancouver cablevision systems via a direct feed.  Canadian cablevision systems carry local AM stations, usually in stereo, relocated to available cable FM positions.

  • 06/20/02 - Rick Dal Farra, CE of the Rogers Lower Mainland stations advises that "X-FM" programming will be returning to FM 92.5 by this evening, effectively undoing the swap of Abbotsford stations CKVX-FM-1 "X-FM" and CFSR-FM "Star FM" at the end of April, which put CKVX-FM-1 on 107.1 and CFSR-FM on 92.5.  Star-FM programming has been running on both frequencies for the last few days.  There is no truth to rumors that the 92.5 transmitter will be shut down.

  • 06/03/02 -  The wife and two children of 42 year old Kip Johns of Stanwood were killed in a head-on collision on Highway 12 near Walla Walla Saturday night.  He was a long time PD of KCMS-FM "Spirit 105.3" Edmonds.  Johns and another son were injured in the crash.  A Walla Walla man has been charged with vehicular homicide.  Further info from Walla Walla Union Bulletin   Thanks to Darlene Anderson

  • 05/28/02 - As rumored on this page a week ago, CJNW AM 730 Vancouver has dropped its all news format.  The station appears to be stunting, with a modern rock format and IDs of "This is CJNW, a Corus Entertainment station" about every 15 minutes.  The change came at 5 a.m.  Thanks to Larry Waldbillig and Erland Carlson.
  • 05/23/02 - Vancouver Corus Radio Engineer Mark Friesen reports that two of the four CJNW AM 730 towers will be replaced this summer.  The station power has dropped over the last year as the tubes are past their typical replacement hours and a replacement transmitter will be fitted.  This, along with other rebuilding on the site will restore the 730 signal.  Additionally, all Vancouver AM stations will be undergoing mandatory supplemental proofs before this December.
  • 05/23/02 - The Skagit Valley Cardinal reports that Skagit Valley College and the city of Mount Vernon have signed an agreement to allow the KSVR-FM 90.1 broadcast antenna to be placed on a city owned tower located on Little Mountain.  The increased height will extend the signal's reach as far south as Lakewood and west to Oak Harbor.   The agreement is the final hurdle in a four year long process of changing frequency to 91.7.  Broadcasting is expected to begin by mid-summer.  Thanks to Larry Waldbillig

  • 05/22/02 - In response to endless requests, Music with Moskowitz returns to KYCW AM 1090 Seattle Sunday at 7 p.m.  The program, hosted by Mad Man Moskowitz also can be heard at noon Sundays on KSER-FM 90.7 Everett.
  • 05/21/02 - Rumors continue to persist that CJNW AM 730 "NW2" Vancouver will switch from news back to music in the near future.   Owner Corus Entertainment thought that it would grab a share of rival CKWX AM 1130, but ratings have been dismal since changing from CKLG "LG73" on February 1 last year.  CJNW's new music format is strongly rumored to be "All 70s".   The change is well timed with soon-to-arrive digital (DAB) radios at Canadian Radio Shack stores.  The station also operates on channel 6, 1461.536 MHz in the DAB band.
  • 05/20/02 - Classic country music returned to KYCW AM 1090 Seattle at 11 p.m. last night as the station reverted to its previous format after nine months of extreme talk.  Tall Paul Fredricks and Buffalo Phil Harper have returned along with most of the station's previous jingles.  Seattle P-I story
  • 05/17/02 - KYCW AM 1090 Seattle is set to make the switch back to Classic Country this coming Monday.  This change will undoubtedly affect programming at some other Infinity stations in the city.  Meanwhile, in Vancouver, another 50,000 watt AM station is reported poised to make a format change, which as yet unconfirmed, could come any time between this weekend and month end.

  • 05/15/02 - Rumors are becoming rampant that KYCW AM 1090 is going to return to its Classic Country format.  The station flipped to Extreme Talk last August 6th.  It managed to grab a .4 market share in the Fall Arbitron Seattle 12+ ratings, but has since slipped to virtually zero.  At best, this represented less than a quarter of previous listeners.  KYCW retained a domain name of kycw.com but the page contains no data.  Any format change, as yet unconfirmed, would likely come in the next few weeks, depending on current contracts.

  • 05/14/02 - M Street Daily reports that the Clear Channel - Ackerley deal will likely get FCC approval in June or July.  The report states that Clear Channel may spin off the TV stations, which would include KVOS-TV/12 Bellingham.  The multi station deal involves two AM and two FM stations in the Seattle area.
  • 05/12/02 - CIVT-TV/32 "BC CTV" Vancouver evening news co-anchor Ravi Baichwal, previously rumored to be moving to radio talk show duties in the city, will be joining CTV Newsnet in Toronto.  He moves in August.
  • 05/11/02 - Broadcast pioneer Fred Weber passed away in West Vancouver May 7th of pneumonia after a lengthy battle with cancer.  He was born in 1922 in Alberta.  He had been an engineer, announcer and executive, involved with radio, TV and cable stations in the Okanagan and northwest B.C., including CKOV, CFCR, CKCQ, CFTK, CKTK, CHTK, CJFW-FM and CKOK.  He was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame in 1988.  A memorial service will be held at West Vancouver United Church, 2062 Esquimalt Ave., West Vancouver on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m.   Canadian Communications Foundation biography
  • 05/10/02 - Richard Bell, GM of KWDB AM 1110 Oak Harbor advises that the station's antenna system is currently being upgraded to improve the signal by late summer.  KWDB, with a diverse AC format from the fifties to current, is going into its third year of operation.  It replaced KJTT, which was owned by Pat O'Day.
  • 05/09/02 - Inspiration Media Inc. has re-submitted application to the FCC for a power increase of KKOL AM 1300 Seattle to 50,000 watts day and night.  The proposed transmitter site is located near Kent at 47-24-53 122-16-42 utilizing four towers, three of which would be used for daytime operation.  It is still the intention of the applicant to surrender the license of first adjacent KIKN AM 1290 Port Angeles if the power increase is granted.  KKOL is currently transmitting with 1000 watts from temporary facilities on a ship near Alki.

  • 04/27/02 - Radio legend John Francis (Jack) Cullen has passed away.  His 55-year radio career went back to CJAV Port Alberni in 1946, CKMO (now CFUN) Vancouver, where he hosted an all night show called "Pacific Patrol" and later "DX Prowl".  He changed the name to "Owl Prowl" and in 1949 moved to CKNW, then AM 1320. Cullen graced the airwaves with the same program for over 45 years at CKNW.  He passed away at 5 a.m. today at St. Mary's Hospital in New Westminster.  Jack Cullen has left us at the age of 80.

  • 04/24/02 - Susie Rei, Viewer Services Representative at KCTS-TV/9 Seattle has informed Northwest Broadcasters that the station will air Louis Rukeyser's new series, Louis Rukeyser's Wall Street, Saturdays at 6:30 a.m. beginning April 27.  The program, now running Fridays at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. PT on cable station CNBC, is being offered to PBS stations under the stipulation that it not run until after Friday midnight.  If the program is renewed after a 13 week initial offering, it will move in mid July to Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. on KCTS.
  • 04/24/02 - The FCC has granted application for minor modification of transmitter facilities for Trininty Broadcasting KTBW-DT/14 Tacoma.  The new digital television facility will now be licensed with 500 kw at 473 meters HAAT on the existing TV tower atop Gold Mountain near Bremerton at 47-32-50 122-47-39.
  • 04/24/02 - The FCC has granted application for change of ownership of KCCF AM 1550 Blaine from Pearl Broadcasting Corporation to BBC Broadcasting, Inc.  The station was purchased February 7 for $600,000 subject to FCC approval. 
  • 04/23/02 - According to an item on Milkman Unlimited, Matt McBride has resigned as Program Director of CFBT-FM 94.5 "The Beat" Vancouver.  The station has been on air for about two months.  The Milkman site also details new additions at Central Island Broadcasting in Courtenay and Nanaimo.

  • 04/08/02 - The National Radio Systems Committee (NRSC) has announced its endorsement of the iBiquity Digital Corporation's AM in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital audio broadcasting system for use on the AM band.  The NRSC recommends that stations desiring to operate with AM IBOC do so only during daytime hours due to potential adjacent channel interference during nighttime operation.  NAB News Release

  • 04/02/02 - It was a fairly quiet April Fools' Day in northwest radio.  "The Buzz" was that BJ Shea was fired from KQBZ-FM 100.7 Seattle; Pepper and Crash on CKVX-FM 104.9 "X-FM" Vancouver were giving out the time in PDT, a week ahead of schedule; and Bob and CJ on KBTB-FM "The Beat" Seattle were re-naming the Space Needle.
  • 03/31/02 - Red Robinson and Doc Harris both returned to local airwaves today at CISL AM 650 Richmond.  Their programs will continue to run Sundays at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.  Additionally the shows are carried on CFRN AM 1260 Edmonton, AB.  CISL's website carries a live audio feed.

  • 03/21/02 - Red Robinson and Doc Harris fans can rejoice as Oldies Radio CISL AM 650 Richmond launches Super Sunday starting March 31.  Red returns with R&R history on the Red Rock Diner between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. followed by three hours of zany historic clips on The Doc Harris Show.  Other Sunday changes include West Coast Sundays from 6 to 9 a.m. re-teaming Gerry O'Day with Joanne Sutton, Sunday Morning Graffiti at 9 and Beatle Brunch at 10.  Meanwhile, morning news anchor Sara Jewell has left to pursue freelance writing.

  • 03/13/02 - The FCC has granted a time extension to KVOS-DT/35 Bellingham to complete contruction of its new digital TV station and has accepted applications for time extensions from KTBW-DT/14 Tacoma, KBCB-DT/19 Bellingham, KWPX-DT/32 Bellevue, KSTW-DT/36 Tacoma, KHCV-DT/44 Seattle and KWOG-DT/50 Bellevue.  Typically, extensions are granted in six-month intervals.

  • 02/27/02 - The Washington department of intercollegiate athletics today awarded its radio rights for football, men's basketball and women's basketball to Action Sports Media / Sporting News Radio. The term of the contract is a four-year agreement from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2006.   According to the Action Sports Media release, The Sporting News Radio network's affiliate in the Puget Sound region is KYCW AM 1090 Seattle.  Fisher Broadcasting (KOMO AM 1000) had been the radio broadcast rights holder since 1978, with the exception of a three-year period from 1986-88 when the games were aired by KIRO AM 710Action Sports Release

  • 02/23/02 - The CFBT-FM 94.5 "The Beat" Vancouver VIP party took place last night (Friday, Feb. 22) at the Commodore Ballroom.  Highlight of the evening was when Juno Award winning Vancouver-based group The Rascalz made a statement on how they can't get air play on local radio.  The new station continues to test its transmitter, and is set to officially launch at 6 p.m. Monday March 4.   Thanks to Club DJ, Mark P

  • 02/19/02 - The Milkman website reports changes made earlier today at Rogers Radio.  The STAR-FM trio (Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Hope) hosts its own live morning show, but all other programming will originate from Vancouver.  Creative and production departments also move to the big city.  Sales, promotions and local management will remain at the Fraser Valley studios.
  • 02/18/02 - "Voice Boy" Jeff Rechner, former jock at CFOX-FM 99.3 and LG73 Vancouver is voicing a 13-episode series called "Point Blank", a spoof on newsmagazine shows like "Dateline", "20/20" and the like.  The program runs every Monday starting March 4th at 7 pm PT on Canada's Comedy Network.
  • 02/18/02 -  Veteran Canadian broadcaster Harvey Kirck has died of a heart attack at his home northeast of Toronto.  He was 73.  Kirck sat at the CTV News anchor desk for 20 years, starting in 1963.  He was joined by Lloyd Robertson in 1976.  Kirck was also heard locally on radio on the now defunct CKO-FM.  Pulse 24
  • 02/18/02 - Former CBS and ABC newsman Howard K. Smith died Friday of pneumonia aggravated by congestive heart failure in Bethesda, MD.  He started at CBS News in 1941 and later moved to television to became a familiar face as correspondent on CBS and anchor/commentator on ABC.  He was 87.  USA Today

  • 02/15/02 - The FCC has granted assignment of license for KONP AM 1450 Port Angeles from Radio Pacific Inc. to Olympic View Broadcasting Inc.  Sale of the station was announced last month for a reported $850,000.
  • 02/15/02 - The FCC has granted application by KACS-FM 90.5 Chehalis for a power increase from 3 kw to 6 kw with antenna change from non-directional to directional.  HAAT remains at 57 meters.
  • 02/14/02 - Further to the transmitter site change of KKOL AM 1300 Seattle:  FCC Application is for 50 kw day/night from location 47-24- 53 122-16-42 using three towers during the day and four at night.  The licensee, Inspiration Media Inc. has agreed in its engineering statement to surrender the license of KIKN AM 1290 Port Angeles if the higher power is granted.
  • 02/14/02 - Fifty years of AM radio history comes to an end in Nanaimo Friday morning as crews remove the old CHUB/CKEG AM 1570 radio towers, which will be dropped by cutting the guy wires.  Meanwhile CKCI AM 1350 Parksville (currently simulcasting the new CIBH FM 88.5) will be leaving the air at 3 p.m. Friday, February 22.  All the equipment for both stations is for sale.  Details and photos are available at the following sites:  CKCI  CKEG  Thanks to Kam Abbott.
  • 02/14/02 - KFNK-FM 104.9 Eatonville put its new 17 kw transmitter through a test a few days ago.   Reports are that it was receivable as far north as Everett but still had problems penetrating buildings in downtown Seattle.  Official cut-over to the new class C3 facility should take place in the next few weeks.
  • 02/14/02 - The CRTC has approved application by Multivan Broadcast Corporation for a new ethnic television station in Vancouver.  The new station will operate on channel 42 with an average effective radiated power of 40,000 watts.  CRTC Decision

  • 01/18/02 - KLKI AM 1340 Anacortes PD Glen Harris advises that the station's website has been updated to better reflect its new Music of Your Life format.  The site features an updated schedule, updates on local sports broadcasts and special events, plus a scrapbook of on-air personalities.
  • 01/17/02 - KLKI AM 1340 Anacortes Sports Director Bill O'Mara of KING-TV/5 Seattle fame turned 85 on January 5th.  He still provides local sports every morning and afternoon, and play-by-play on high school sports broadcasts.  The day before his birthday, Bill was interviewed by Dori Monson at KIRO AM 710 Seattle, who credits him for many of his successes in the early days of his radio career.
  • 01/16/02 - Effective January 15, CHOO-FM 101.7 Tofino has gone dark due to financial and other problems.  A licence for the low-powered FM station was approved by the CRTC on July 15, 1999 on application by P.L.M. Broadcasting Ltd.  Funding was to be provided by Ma-Mook Development Corporation, a non-profit business development created by the five Central Region First Nations of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.   A handful of tiny rebroadcast stations and CBC Radio One serve the west coast area of Vancouver Island, but CHOO-FM was the only live local broadcaster.  Original CRTC Approval
  • 01/14/02 - CIBH-FM 88.5 "The Beach" Parksville made its official sign-on as scheduled at 6 a.m. today.   The station will continue to simulcast on AM 1350 for a couple of months.  The move is the last of a migration by Central Island Broadcasting stations from AM to FM in Nanaimo and Parksville on Vancouver Island.

  • 01/11/02 - Eastlan Resources has been signed for three years by Saga Communications to provide ratings for Whatcom and Skagit Counties starting with the Spring 2002 period.  The area was previously measured as a CSAR (Custom Survey Area Report) market by Arbitron.
  • 01/11/02 - CHOO-FM 101.7 Tofino is reportedly leaving the air next week.  It is rumored that the station is unable to continue operation due to low advertising revenue.  There is no further word on its future at this time.
  • 01/11/02 - Engineer Ernie Hopseker reports that the new KFNK-FM 104.9 Eatonville 17 kW directional transmitter is in place and will soon be ready to go.  To facilitate the change, KKRV-FM 104.9 Wenatchee is in the process of moving down the band one channel to 104.7.  Equipment for that change is expected by January 21, with installation likely to be completed early next month.  At that time, both stations will be testing their new facilities at reduced power, with completion expected later in February.
  • 01/10/02 - CIBH-FM 88.5 "The Beach" Parksville has successfully completed its testing period.  "Oceanside Favourites" will officially go on air with an Adult Contemporary/Oldies format at 6:00 a.m. Monday January 14 with Patrick Nicholson at the controls.  CIBH will be simulcast on AM 1350 for the next two months.  Thanks to Kam Abbott and Chris Donnelly
