Channel Communications has filed to acquire KFNK-FM
104.9 "Funky Monkey" Eatonville. The asset purchase agreement is
between current owner, Rock on Radio, LLC and Ackerley Media Group, Inc., owned by Clear

TV, including KOMO-TV/4 Seattle.

has approved application by the CBC to change the frequency
of CBRU Squamish from 1260 kHz (Class LP) to 1270 (Class C) with a power increase from 40

- 12/09/02 - It only turns 15 on December 12, but CKKQ-FM 100.3 "The Q" Victoria is putting on a
spread befitting of stations 50 or even 75 years old. "Q-ography: 15 Years of the
Island's Rock," starts at 6 p.m. this Friday and ends Sunday at midnight. The
three-times-repeated 18 hour broadcast, which will consume three 6 hour hi-fi VHS video
tapes on SLP, will include actual broadcasts from The Q's past, including station
personalities, past and present: Ed Bain, Mark Kriski, Cheryl Cox, Rick Everett, Kerry
Campbell, Dave Farough and more.

University in Burnaby has announced it will launch its community-based campus radio
station on January 31, 2003. CJSF-FM will
operate on 90.1 MHz with 450 watts. The station has been operating on campus for

- 12/05/02 - The original 1924 microphone from CFXC,
Vancouver's third oldest continually operating radio station was donated Wednesday evening
to SPARC, the Society for the
Preservation of Antique Radio in Canada. Veteran broadcaster Red Robinson accepted the donation at RPM, the
Radio Performers Membership, a gathering of broadcasting professionals. The mike was
presented by Dorothy Allen and Fred Hume III, grandchildren of Fred Hume, original owner
of CFXC, forerunner of CJOR, CHRX and currently CKBD AM
600.

who adds, "That's all it is, speculation".

- Bill Gallant, Director of Communications for the Archdiocese
of Seattle and former KIRO and KING talk radio host, died this morning at Swedish
Hospital. He passed away at the age of 48 after a five year battle with colon
cancer. A vigil service will be held Monday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. at St. James Cathedral, with funeral the

- Veteran broadcast engineer Max Bice, W7AEA, passed away over the weekend in a
Tacoma-area Hospital at the age of 85. He started in Radio in 1938 at KMO, Tacoma.
In 1948 he moved to the Tacoma News Tribune and built KTNT AM & FM and KTNT-TV.
He was an original founder and Chief Engineer emeritus of KGHP-FM, Gig Harbor.
A Celebration of life will be held next Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Gig Harbor Yacht Club. Thanks to Keith Stiles

- Belated word has been received about the passing of long-time broadcaster Philip Douglas
(Phil) Barter at the age of 69. He passed away at his retirement home in Qualicum
Beach on Sept. 23 after a brief battle with cancer. He made his radio start at age
14 at CJAV Port Alberni in 1948, later moving to CKDA Victoria as news editor.
Barter was the first person on air at the sign on of CHEK-TV/6 Victoria on December 1,
1956. He was the weatherman for five years before joining CHAN-TV/8 Vancouver as
news director in 1961.

Canucks", is one of ten to be inducted into the Canadian
Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Robson started his radio career at
CJAV Port Alberni in 1952. He commuted to CHUB Nanaimo to do live lacrosse in 1955
and moved to CKWX Vancouver in 1956, doing play-by-play for the WHL Canucks, BC Lions
football and Mounties baseball. He covered over 2000 Canucks NHL games over a period of 24

- Retired Seattle helicopter pilot/traffic reporter Paul Brendle died Tuesday night, just
an hour before his 56th birthday. The King County Medical Examiner's Office says he died
from carbon monoxide inhalation. He was a traffic reporter for KIRO AM 710 from 1978 to 1997. A spokesman for
the family says there are no other details on his death available at this time.

frequency change for KLLM-FM 103.9 Forks, WA to 95.9. Also urged is a frequency

Mid-Columbia Broadcasting Inc. has filed a counterproposal with the FCC to change its
previously proposed city of license for KMCQ-FM 104.5
The Dalles, OR from Covington, WA to Kent, WA. In order to facilitate this change, KAFE-FM 104.3 Bellingham would move to 104.1 with no
change of facilities and KLLM-FM 103.9 Forks would move to 105.5 with a license
modification. Changes to current vacant allotments would have to be made in Powell
River, Campbell River and Bralorne, BC with the agreement of Industry Canada, otherwise
KAFE-FM would have to operate with a directional antenna. The number of people in the
KMCQ-FM 1 mV/m contour would increase from 92,556 to 2,963,440.

Mainland stations advises that "X-FM" programming will be returning to FM 92.5
by this evening, effectively undoing the swap of Abbotsford stations CKVX-FM-1 "X-FM" and CFSR-FM "Star FM" at the end of April, which
put CKVX-FM-1 on 107.1 and CFSR-FM on 92.5. Star-FM programming has been running on
both frequencies for the last few days. There is no truth to rumors that the 92.5

- 05/23/02 - Vancouver Corus Radio Engineer Mark Friesen reports that two of
the four CJNW AM 730 towers will be replaced this summer. The station power has
dropped over the last year as the tubes are past their typical replacement hours
and a replacement transmitter will be fitted. This, along with other rebuilding on
the site will restore the 730 signal. Additionally, all Vancouver AM stations will
be undergoing mandatory supplemental proofs before this December.

- 05/23/02 - The Skagit Valley Cardinal reports that Skagit Valley College and the city of Mount Vernon have
signed an agreement to allow the KSVR-FM 90.1 broadcast
antenna to be placed on a city owned tower located on Little Mountain. The increased
height will extend the signal's reach as far south as Lakewood and west to Oak Harbor.
The agreement is the final hurdle in a four year long process of changing frequency

730 "NW2" Vancouver will switch from news back to music in the near future.
Owner Corus Entertainment thought that it
would grab a share of rival CKWX AM 1130, but
ratings have been dismal since changing from CKLG "LG73" on February 1 last
year. CJNW's new music format is strongly rumored to be "All 70s".
The change is well timed with soon-to-arrive digital (DAB) radios at Canadian Radio Shack stores. The station also operates
on channel 6, 1461.536 MHz in the DAB band.

1090 Seattle at 11 p.m. last night as the station reverted to its previous format after

1090 is going to return to its Classic Country format. The station flipped to
Extreme Talk last August 6th. It managed to grab a .4 market share in the Fall Arbitron Seattle 12+
ratings, but has since slipped to virtually zero. At best, this represented less
than a quarter of previous listeners. KYCW retained a domain name of kycw.com but the page contains no data. Any format
change, as yet unconfirmed, would likely come in the next few weeks, depending on current
contracts.

- 05/11/02 - Broadcast pioneer Fred Weber passed away
in West Vancouver May 7th of pneumonia after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was
born in 1922 in Alberta. He had been an engineer, announcer and executive, involved
with radio, TV and cable stations in the Okanagan and northwest B.C., including CKOV,
CFCR, CKCQ, CFTK, CKTK, CHTK, CJFW-FM and CKOK. He was inducted into the Canadian
Broadcast Hall of Fame in 1988. A memorial service will be held at West Vancouver
United Church, 2062 Esquimalt Ave., West Vancouver on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m.

- Radio legend John Francis (Jack) Cullen has passed away. His 55-year radio career
went back to CJAV Port Alberni in 1946, CKMO (now CFUN) Vancouver, where he hosted an all
night show called "Pacific Patrol" and later "DX Prowl". He
changed the name to "Owl Prowl" and in 1949 moved to CKNW, then AM 1320. Cullen
graced the airwaves with the same program for over 45 years at CKNW. He passed away
at 5 a.m. today at St. Mary's Hospital in New Westminster. Jack Cullen has left us
at the age of 80.

department of intercollegiate athletics today awarded its radio rights for football, men's
basketball and women's basketball to Action
Sports Media / Sporting News Radio. The
term of the contract is a four-year agreement from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2006.
According to the Action Sports Media release, The Sporting News Radio network's
affiliate in the Puget Sound region is KYCW AM 1090 Seattle. Fisher Broadcasting (KOMO
AM 1000) had been the radio broadcast rights holder since 1978, with the exception of

- 02/23/02 - The CFBT-FM 94.5 "The Beat" Vancouver VIP party
took place last night (Friday, Feb. 22) at the Commodore Ballroom. Highlight of the
evening was when Juno Award
winning Vancouver-based group The Rascalz
made a statement on how they can't get air play on local radio. The new station
continues to test its transmitter, and is set to officially launch at 6 p.m. Monday March

made earlier today at Rogers
Radio. The STAR-FM trio (Chilliwack,
Abbotsford, Hope) hosts its own live morning show, but all other programming will
originate from Vancouver. Creative and production departments also move to the big
city. Sales, promotions and local management will remain at the Fraser Valley
studios.

Boy" Jeff Rechner, former jock at CFOX-FM 99.3
and LG73 Vancouver is voicing a 13-episode series called "Point Blank", a spoof
on newsmagazine shows like "Dateline", "20/20" and the like. The
program runs every Monday starting March 4th at 7 pm PT on Canada's Comedy Network.

- 02/18/02 - Veteran Canadian broadcaster Harvey Kirck
has died of a heart attack at his home northeast of Toronto. He was 73. Kirck
sat at the CTV News anchor desk for 20 years, starting in
1963. He was joined by Lloyd Robertson in 1976. Kirck was also heard locally

and ABC newsman Howard K. Smith
died Friday of pneumonia aggravated by congestive heart failure in Bethesda, MD. He
started at CBS News in 1941 and later moved to television to became a familiar face as

Communications Inc. has reported losses for the fourth quarter and full year as
the Seattle-based company reported a sharp slump in advertising revenue for its
broadcasting operations. Fisher's holdings include KOMO-TV/4

- 02/14/02 - Fifty years of AM radio history comes to
an end in Nanaimo Friday morning as crews remove the old CHUB/CKEG AM 1570 radio towers,
which will be dropped by cutting the guy wires. Meanwhile CKCI AM 1350 Parksville
(currently simulcasting the new CIBH FM 88.5) will be leaving the air at 3 p.m. Friday,

104.9 Eatonville put its new 17 kw transmitter through a test a few days ago.
Reports are that it was receivable as far north as Everett but still had problems
penetrating buildings in downtown Seattle. Official cut-over to the new class C3
facility should take place in the next few weeks.

- 02/14/02 - The CRTC has approved application by Multivan Broadcast Corporation for a new ethnic
television station in Vancouver. The new station will operate on channel 42 with an

for many of his successes in the early days of his radio career.

- 01/16/02 - Effective January 15, CHOO-FM 101.7 Tofino has gone dark due to
financial and other problems. A licence for the low-powered FM station was approved
by the CRTC on July 15, 1999 on application by P.L.M. Broadcasting Ltd. Funding was
to be provided by Ma-Mook Development Corporation, a non-profit business development
created by the five Central Region First Nations of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.
A handful of tiny rebroadcast stations and CBC Radio One serve the west coast area

Beach" Parksville made its official sign-on as scheduled at 6 a.m. today. The
station will continue to simulcast on AM 1350 for a couple of months. The move is
the last of a migration by Central Island
Broadcasting stations from AM to FM in Nanaimo and Parksville on Vancouver Island.

Resources has been signed for three years by Saga Communications to provide ratings for
Whatcom and Skagit Counties starting with the Spring 2002 period. The area was

101.7 Tofino is reportedly leaving the air next week. It is rumored that the
station is unable to continue operation due to low advertising revenue. There is no
further word on its future at this time.

- 01/11/02 - Engineer Ernie Hopseker reports that the
new KFNK-FM 104.9 Eatonville 17 kW directional
transmitter is in place and will soon be ready to go. To facilitate the change, KKRV-FM 104.9 Wenatchee is in the process of moving down
the band one channel to 104.7. Equipment for that change is expected by January 21,
with installation likely to be completed early next month. At that time, both
stations will be testing their new facilities at reduced power, with completion expected
later in February.

- 01/10/02 - CIBH-FM 88.5 "The
Beach" Parksville has successfully completed its testing period.
"Oceanside Favourites" will officially go on air with an Adult
Contemporary/Oldies format at 6:00 a.m. Monday January 14 with Patrick Nicholson at the
