  • 12/21/01 - KIXI AM 880 Seattle is celebrating the 88 Hours of Christmas.  At this point, news items regarding Christmas music format changes will end, as most stations move to Holiday Programming.
  • 12/21/01 - Call letter change noted for CKIS FM 100.5 Hope to CKSR-FM-1Rogers Radio has transferred the call to CKIS-FM 107.5 Vernon (formerly CJIB AM 940), in line with their "Kiss" slogan.
  • 12/20/01 - As per tradition at the station, KBSG-FM 97.3 Tacoma will go All Christmas at twelve noon December 24.  KAFE-FM 104.3 Bellingham makes the move the same day to join the others which have already made the switch.  Thanks to Larry Waldbillig
  • 12/20/01 - New website link added for Multicultural Radio Broadcasting Inc., parent company of KXPA AM 1540 Bellevue and Way Broadcasting (KARI/KVRI Blaine).  Thanks to Tim Mauch
  • 12/20/01 - Erik Swanson reports that KBCS-FM 91.3 Bellevue ruturned to the air with their new 8000 watt omni-directional transmitter Tuesday evening.  Reception reports from the southwest, including Vashon Island have been positive.
  • 12/18/01 - Erik Swanson further reports that KBCS-FM 91.3 Bellevue went off the air at 8:50 a.m. to make the antenna switch.  The station is expected to be back on this afternoon.   The new transmitter co-ordinates listed below have been in effect for several years and updates FCC records.  The most signal improvement should be to the southwest, which was in the null of the old directional antenna.
  • 12/18/01 - M Street Daily reports that after 43-years, Seattle and Northwest radio vet, Fisher Communications' Sr. VP Shannon Sweatte will retire at the end of the year.
  • 12/18/01 - CBU AM 690 "CBC Radio One" Vancouver has been running at reduced power due to a fire on Friday at their transmitter site.  Repairs are expected by mid week.   Thanks to Eric Floden
  • 12/18/01 - Erik Swanson of Hatfield & Dawson Consulting Engineers advises that installation is in progress today of the new omnidirectional transmitting antenna for KBCS-FM 91.3 Bellevue.  The new antenna is slightly relocated at 47-35-9 122-8-43 with a power increase from 7900 to 8000 watts at 64 meters HAAT.  The new facility should improve signal coverage lost when CJZN-FM 91.3 "The Zone" (originally CKXM-FM) Victoria signed on at the same frequency.
  • 12/17/01 - The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has applied to the CRTC to amend the licence for a new French language FM station to broadcast the programs of La Chaîne culturelle.  The original application proposed using 94.5 MHz but that frequency was turned down when it was given to a new Urban station.  The CBC now has requested the use of 90.9 with an average ERP of 287 watts.  CRTC Info
  • 12/15/01 - KMPS-FM 94.1 Seattle becomes the second station in the city to go All Christmas.  Thanks to Larry Waldbillig
  • 12/15/01 - The power decrease authorized by the CRTC for CISQ-FM 107.1 Squamish on September 4 from 20,000 to 12,480 watts, comes with a change to directional antenna and a small increase in HAAT from 531.0 to 533.6 meters.  The resultant peak ERP increases from 20,000 to 30,000 watts.
  • 12/15/01 - The power decrease authorized by the CRTC for CKVX-FM 107.5 Chilliwack on September 4 from 640 to 303 watts, comes with a change to directional antenna and a slight drop in HAAT from 223.0 to 210.1 meters.  The resultant peak ERP remains the same at 640 watts.
  • 12/14/01 - Brook Stanford retires today from KOMO-TV/4 Seattle after more than 30 years with the station.  A tribute will run at the beginning of today's 5 p.m. news.  Aydrea Walden, Seattle Times
  • 12/13/01 - CKEG AM 1570 Nanaimo will leave the air at 3:00 p.m. Friday.  The station began broadcasting as CHWF-FM 106.9 "The Wolf" at midnight September 29 and continued simulcasting on AM for the allowable three-month period.   CKEG's forerunner CHUB originally started broadcasting at 1570 in Nanaimo in 1949.   The closure clears yet another AM frequency on the B.C. coast, allowing for night time reception of such far away signals as XERF Ciudad Acuna Mexico.   Thanks to Kam Abbott.
  • 12/12/01 - Central Island Broadcasting Production Manager Chris Donnelly reports that CIBH-FM 88.5 "The Beach" Parksville will be officially on the air by mid January.  The format will be Adult Contemporary.
  • 12/11/01 - Further reception reports on the new CIBH FM 88.5 Parksville indicate a signal as far north as Courtenay and south to the north end of Nanaimo, where co-channel interference becomes present from KPLU-FM 88.5 Tacoma.  The station started testing at noon December 10.  Thanks to Kam Abbott
  • 12/11/01 - Classical KING-FM 98.1 Seattle continued in second spot overall in the November 2001 Arbitron Webcast Channel Ratings with a very consistent 516,100 aggregate tuning hours (ATH), behind first place MEDIAmazing with 600,800 ATH.  Virgin Radio UK slipped to third with 360,600 ATH, likely due to website technical difficulties.  Jazz programmed KPLU-FM 89.5 Tacoma came in eighth with 209,800 ATH.   Arbitron Press Release  Thanks to Brdcast Svcs
  • 12/10/01 - Central Island Broadcasting's CIBH FM 88.5 "The Beach" Parksville is testing their new transmitter.  Reports from Vancouver indicate that the signal in many areas is overcoming KPLU-FM 88.5 Tacoma. 
  • 12/10/01 - The radio division of Corus Entertainment, operator of 52 stations in Canada, four in the Vancouver market, has achieved revenue growth of 1% against a benchmark of 4%.  Corus recently imported John Hayes from the U.S. to shape up the division and revatilize program formats .  Matthew Fraser, National Post
  • 12/08/01 - KKOL AM 1300 "The Source" Seattle has made application to the FCC for 50 KW from a directional antenna with different constants day and night.  Four towers are proposed, with three of them in use during the daytime at 47-24-53 122-16-42 located between Kent and Burien.
  • 12/07/01 - A strike by 1600 technicians at the CBC is disrupting programming.  National newscasts are being shortened and local ones canceled.  A Canadian mainstay, Hockey Night in Canada, may be affected at CBC-TV Vancouver and Toronto Saturday and the Canadian Olympic curling trials have been moved to cable station TSNJohn McKay, Canadian Press
  • 12/06/01 - Brand new website link added for CKVU-TV/10 Vancouver.  Note the "13" is in reference to the station's cable position in southwest B.C.  Thanks to Erland Carlson
  • 12/03/01 - After several days of running announcements that their Fraser Valley stations had moved to the FM dial, Rogers Radio has turned off the AM 850, 1240 and 1270 transmitters.  The new "STAR-FM" trio consists of CKSR FM 98.3 Chilliwack, CFSR FM 107.1 Abbotsford and CKIS FM 100.5 Hope.  The new stations had been simulcasting on their old AM frequencies for three months.
  • 12/03/01 - Other on-air personnel affected by the Corus Entertainment staff cuts at CKNW AM 980 include Terry Moore and Leigh McKay.   Weekend shows and newscasts at 'NW have been either shuffled or deleted, and overnight news is being simulcast with sister station CJNW AM 730 "NW2".  In addition, Lou del Gobbo becomes the new Station Manager to replace Chris Pandoff who takes over VP of Sales at Corus in Toronto.  Thanks to Ted Wendland, Puget Sound Radio Guide.
  • 12/01/01 - The staff cuts at Corus Entertainment, described as "mostly administrative", include long time air personality Doc Harris from CKNW AM 980 Vancouver.  Doc's past includes half a dozen Vancouver stations, including the morning slot for several years at CKLG AM 730 "LG-73", now All News CJNW "NW2".
  • 11/30/01 - Some cost cutting measures at Rogers Radio stations, as Paul Baruzzi has been cut after ten years as the Morning Show Producer at CKKS-FM 96.9 "KISS-FM" Vancouver.  Meanwhile, Wayne Deschover has been appointed Assistant Operations Manager and Morning Show Host at CISQ-FM 107.1 "Mountain FM" Squamish, replacing B.J.   • 11/30/01 - Central Island Broadcasting Production Manager Chris Donnelly advises that the new CIBH FM 88.5 Parksville will operate with it's own DJs, independently from sister station CHWF-FM 106.9 Nanaimo.  Format is yet to be announced.

  • 11/29/01 - Three AM frequencies are about to come clear in southwestern BC.  The three-month simulcasting period has come to an end for the "STAR-FM" trio of CKSR-FM 98.3 Chilliwack, CFSR-FM 107.1 Abbotsford and CKIS-FM 100.5 Hope.  AM 1270, 850 and 1250 now are airing a recording saying that they are no longer carrying the STAR-FM programming.  Roots of the station go back to the sign-on of CHWK AM 1270 Chilliwack in 1927.

  • 11/27/01 - Effective immediately the popular Reggae program "Roots Train" on CHLY-FM 101.7 Nanaimo moves to 12 noon to 3 p.m. Sundays.  Show host Mike Cherry, formerly of CITR, KYAC and CJAZ, also will be debuting on "Sunday Jazz" 3 to 4 p.m. starting December 9 on days when there are no Clippers Hockey games.  CHLY programming is available live at their website.
  • 11/27/01 - Word has been received that veteran broadcaster Jack Stark passed away October 30 at the age of 83.  He was the main financier of CHQM AM & FM Vancouver which came on the air in 1959 and 1960 respectively.  He was named Broadcaster of the Year in 1998 by the British Columbia Association of Broadcasters.
  • 11/26/01 - The CRTC has approved application by CHUM Limited to increase the average effective radiated power of CHQM-FM 103.5 Vancouver from 49,000 to 53,000 watts and HAAT from 604 to 617.6 meters.  (Peak ERP is listed by industry Canada at 100,000 watts, and likely will not change).  CRTC Info
  • 11/25/01 - A detailed account of the lean times being suffered by media companies in Seattle due to one of the worst advertising downturns ever.  Alwyn Scott, Seattle Times
  • 11/24/01 - Official call letters have been assigned for the new FM 94.5 in Vancouver.  Appropriately, the new call is CFBT-FM.   "The Beat" is expected on air in the early Spring of 2002.
  • 11/24/01 - KBAI AM 930 Bellingham joins KRWM-FM 106.9 Bremerton in an All Christmas format for the holiday season.  Thanks to Brian Walks
  • 11/24/01 - The Howard Stern show, aired locally on KISW-FM 99.9 Seattle, has been dropped from Canadian airwaves.  "Q-107" Toronto has canceled the show after a four-year run, due to a steady drop in ratings.  The only other Canadian station to run the show, CHOM-FM Montreal, dropped it in 1998.  The Toronto Star
  • 11/23/01 - The "STAR-FM" trio of CKSR-FM 98.3 Chilliwack, CFSR-FM 107.1 Abbotsford and CKIS-FM 100.5 Hope officially launched as "The Valley's Light Rock" on August 31.  The three new FM stations are replacing AM frequencies of 1270, 850 and 1240 respectively.  The three-month simulcasting period allowed by the CRTC expires November 30.  Rogers Lower Mainland CE Jack Wiebe reports that 1270 will go dark first, followed by the other two frequencies.
  • 11/21/01 - Phase One Fall 2001 Seattle Ratings have been released with KIRO AM 710, KMPS-FM 94.1 and KUBE-FM 93.3 holding down the first three spots respectively, little changed from before.   Of interest is KYCW AM 1090, which had 1.3 last spring as Classic Country, now with only .4 as Extreme Talk.  Complete 12+ Arbitron
  • 11/18/01 - Due to the uncertainty of the future of @Home as a service provider, NORTHWEST BROADCASTERS has moved to a new server at Shaw Communications.  Our nwbroadcasters.com domain name stays the same. The move should ensure quick and reliable connections to this website.
  • 11/15/01 - Bob Dawson passed away in Vancouver November 7th at age 43.  He began his radio career at CJOR (now CKBD) as one of Vancouver's youngest DJs.  He was the voice of Santa Claus every Christmas for 20 years on CKNW's Rafe Mair show and the Promotions Manager at CKXY (now CKST "Team 1040").  In later years he had acted in the X-Files, Millenium, Stargate, Cold Squad and Call of the Wild.  A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver on Thursday, November 29th at 2 p.m.
  • 11/15/01 - Broadcast pioneer Joe Chesney passed away Saturday, November 10 at the age of 82.  He began in radio as a trainee announcer at CFJC Kamloops in 1946.  After a few months, he moved to CJAV Port Alberni until the following year when he went to CKNW New Westminster.   "Uncle Joe" had a vast knowledge of country music and progressed to the morning show at 'NW in October 1947.  He founded CJJC Langley in 1963.  A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday November 24 at Langley United Church, 5673 200th St.
  • 11/13/01 - The new KVRI AM 1600 Blaine has been operating 24 hours a day recently, broadcasting Radio Punjab.   Thanks to Brian Walks
  • 11/13/01 - General Motors Canada has announced that it will be the first auto maker to install Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) receivers in over twenty models beginning in the Spring of 2002.  GM Press Release  Meanwhile, Radio Shack will become the first retail chain in Canada to carry a complete line of DAB products, starting early next year.  Included will be boomboxes, walkman devices and computer attachments.  DAB stations are operating in Vancouver, Toronto, Windsor and Montreal. 
  • 11/09/01 - Sandusky Radio has formed a partnership with KIRO-TV/7 Seattle for customized reports on local breaking news on their five radio stations, and cross promotion.  Fisher Radio has issued layoff notices to seven staff members at its three stations effective December 14 including 30-year veteran newsman Lan Archer.  Bill Virgin's Radio Beat, Seattle P-I
  • 11/08/01 - CKWV FM 102.3 Nanaimo has changed slogan from "The Island's Own Light Rock" to "Nanaimo's All Hit Music".  The change follows a programming tweak towards a more "bouncy" hit oriented sound.  Meanwhile, equipment is being installed and a test signal should be heard by early December for CIBH FM 88.5 Parksville.   The new FM is a conversion of CKCI AM 1350, which received CRTC approval in September.  Thanks to Kam Abbott
  • 11/07/01 - The CBC has applied to the CRTC to delete its rebroadcaster CBUT-21 channel 2 at Holberg on northern Vancouver Island.  The transmitter had been intermittently off air but the corporation has never received any complaint calls.  CRTC Info
  • 11/05/01 - Pamela Vawter, Office Manager at KARI AM 550 Blaine reports that new sister station KVRI AM 1600 should be officially up and running with an ethnic format in December or January.  Engineering tests are still being conducted on the new transmitter.
  • 11/05/01 - The FCC has accepted for filing, application by KFMY FM 97.7 Raymond for a power increase to 44 kilowatts at 403 meters above average terrain.  FCC Info
  • 11/05/01 - KFMY-FM 97.7 Raymond has moved to a classic hits format and are identifying as "South Sound's Classic Hits, 97-7 The Eagle."  Long-time Seattle radio host Norm Gregory has returned to the air, doing the morning shift from his home.  Thanks to Stephen Hyde
  • 11/03/01 - A new Tourist Information Service identifying itself as "About Town Surrey" is testing on FM 88.9.  The transmitter is authorized to operate at 34 watts and is located in Surrey, just north of the border.  The signal is easily receivable as far north as south Vancouver.  CRTC Info   Thanks to Brian Walks
  • 10/29/01 - Citizens to Preserve the Upper Snohomish River Valley plan to appeal Snohomish County Planning and Development Services ruling that the new KRKO AM 1380 Everett 50 kw transmission towers will not have a significant impact on the environment.  Leslie Moriarty, HeraldNet
  • 10/28/01 - KBTC-TV/28 Tacoma, which also rebroadcasts on KCKA-TV/15 Centralia & K65BU-TV/65 in Grays River/Lebam, starts broadcasting today from the new William P. Mohler Multimedia and Business Campus
    of Bates Technical College, formerly the home of KSTW-TV/11 Tacoma.  KSTW-TV moved to their new studios in Renton last August.  Bates' Audio and Sound program, which is home to the student-run KBTC FM 91.7, also will be moving to the Mohler Campus at a later date.  Thanks to Stephen Hyde

  • 10/26/01 - The FCC has approved application for voluntary assignment of license of KZOE FM 90.3 Longview from Columbia Heights Christian Academy to Columbia Heights Christian Assembly of God.  The Academy was a division of the Assembly, but has now closed, necessitating the change.
  • 10/26/01 - CKKS FM 96.9 Vancouver CE Jack Wiebe reports that sign on of their re-broadcaster CKKS-FM-1 (also 96.9) in Whistler has been postponed until the spring due to technical issues.
  • 10/26/01 - On again, off again KVRI AM 1600 Blaine is back on with a religious feed.  The station first appeared September 13, then went silent after a few weeks.   When it comes on permanently, it will feature an ethnic format.  Thanks to Larry Waldbillig

  • 10/25/01 - "Voice Boy" Jeff Rechner, previously of CFOX FM 99.3 and the old CKLG AM 730 Vancouver fame, continues to add to his large international client list with the addition of several new TV stations in the eastern US.
  • 10/25/01 - The five year old KUOW-FM 94.9 Seattle satirical production "Rewind" hosted by Bill Radke, which airs on over 80 public radio stations, doubles to one hour next February.  This and other news items at Bill Virgin's Radio Beat, The Seattle P-I
  • 10/24/01 - After holding the position for eight years, Bob Mills has been released as Program Director of CFOX FM 99.3 "The Fox" Vancouver.  Consolidation was blamed for the decision.  Ross Winters becomes PD of both CFOX and CFMI FM 101.1 "Rock 101".  Milkman News Source
  • 10/24/01 - The News Hour Final with Jill Krop on CHAN-TV/8 (Global BC) is the big winner in the Vancouver TV news ratings.  The big loser is the supper hour news on CKVU-TV/10, while the evening news with Moe Sihota on CIVI-TV/53 "The New VI" Victoria is off to a very slow start.  Alex Strachan, The Sun
  • 10/23/01 - Clear Channel Communications, which will be entering the Seattle radio market with its acquisition of the Ackerly Group, has exceeded its station ownership limit in Syracuse, Rochester, Binghamton and Utica-Rome, NY and Santa Barbara, CA.   It is reported that Clear Channel will be asking the FCC for twelve to eighteen months to divest the extra stations.

  • 10/22/01 - Former KJR AM 950 Seattle morning man from 1969 to 1974, Lee "Emperor" Smith passed away from skin cancer last week in Riverside, CA.  KJR Radio Memories
  • 10/18/01 - KVRI AM 1600 Blaine, which had been signal testing a few weeks ago, has since been silent.   The station is expected to officially sign on with an ethnic format before the beginning of the new year, as the construction permit expires in January 2002.   Potential interference with the low power border information station on first adjacent AM 1610 is yet to be resolved.  Thanks to Brian Walks

  • 10/15/01 - The CRTC has approved application by CHUM Limited to acquire control of CKVU Sub Inc., licensee of CKVU-TV/10 Vancouver.  CRTC Decision  
  • 10/14/01 - With Clear Channel Communications coming to Seattle, the following item by Don Barrett of LARadio.com about CC's push to automate stations coast to coast: "The new technology is called Prophet, a system whereby a music DJ can pre-record or voicetrack a five-hour shift for any market in the country in less than an hour.  Instead of replacing personalities, management is taking advantage of the existing pool of CC personalities and allowing this pool of talent to be on as many as six different stations a day.  The financial savings will be enormous."
  • 10/13/01 - In response to falling revenues and tough competition, layoff notices will be served next week on some of the 218 employees of KOMO-TV/4 Seattle.  Alwynn Scott, Seattle Times

  • 10/10/01 - The studio transmitter link for CKWV FM 102.3 and CHWF FM 106.9 Nanaimo has malfunctioned.  CKWV is using Parksville's CKWV-1 STL and CHWF is using its off-air AM (simulcast) feed from CKEG AM 1570.  Thanks to Kam Abbott
  • 10/08/01 - After a delay due to contractual oblications, Pamela Martin joins Bill Good for the first time tonight on the CTV News at Six on CIVT-TV/32 "BC CTV".
  • 10/04/01 - CIVI-TV/53 "The New VI" Victoria (CIVI-TV-2/17 Vancouver) officially begins broadcasting at 6 p.m. today with a two hour launch party.  Dana Gee, The Province
  • 10/04/01 - After 40 years in the business, legendary newsman, DJ and station manager Dick Curtis has retired from KVI AM 570.   Curtis' career went back to 1960 KJR.   Full story from Bill Virgin, Seattle P-I
  • 10/03/01 - The official sign on for CHLY FM 101.7 Nanaimo is Friday October 5 at 6 p.m. with an on-air party.   This will be followed by a Nanaimo Clippers hockey game at 7:30.  Thanks to Mike Cherry, who hosts the Reggae program Roots Train Sundays 2 - 5 p.m.
  • 10/02/01 - KSVR FM 90.1 GM, Rip Robbins reports that the station will be moving to FM 91.7 as soon as their application is approved by the FCC.  Original application for the new frequency was made under the call letters KTHY, but the station will remain as KSVR when it moves to its new frequency.
  • 10/01/01 - Two former Vancouver broadcast journalists have passed away.  Bob Spence died last week at the age of 53.  Joe Leary, The Province   Doug Collins, who had worked at the CBC and CJOR as well as several newspapers, died Saturday morning in North Vancouver at the age of 81.
  • 09/29/01 - As scheduled, CHWF FM 106.9 Nanaimo "joined" with CKEG AM 1570 at 12 a.m. to become "The Wolf" and the end of the Good Time Oldies format.  Official launch is the new Marc and Mindy morning show Monday, October 1.  Another coastal AM frequency will come clear when 1570 shuts down within three months.  Thanks to Kam Abbott & Mike Cherry 
  • 09/25/01 - The Seattle Arbitron summer period two radio ratings have been released with little change from a month ago.  Details from R&R Online
  • 09/25/01 - The FCC has accepted for filing CP for new Skagit Valley College station KTHY FM 91.7.   It is not yet known when the station will get on the air.
  • 09/25/01 - Brad Edwards, Operations Manager at the new CHWF FM 106.9 "The Wolf" Nanaimo, reports that barring unforeseen problems, CHWF will start simulcasting with CKEG AM 1570 Saturday, September 29.  Officially, the station launches Monday, October 1 with the new Marc and Mindy morning show.  A website also is being designed and will be unveiled in a few weeks.  The AM 1570 transmitter is authorized to continue operating for a period of up to three months.

  • 09/21/01 -  A two-hour live, commercial-free, simulcast to raise funds for a long-term relief effort for Americans who have directly suffered from last week's terrorist attacks, will air tonight from 9:00 - 11:00 p.m. PT.  The program, "America: a Tribute to Heroes" will be on every major TV network as well as about two dozen cable networks and eight thousand radio stations in the US.  In Canada, it will run on CTV, Global and other TV stations and will be distributed to 400 radio stations by Broadcast News, a division of Canadian Press.  It also will be webcast live on the internet at http://www.tributetoheroes.org.

  • 09/21/01 - CHLY FM 101.7 and CHWF FM 106.9 Nanaimo made it on the air for test purposes at 6:30 a.m. today after a 22 hour engineering marathon at the transmitter site.  101.7 is temporarily in mono due to some difficulties which should be fixed in a day or two.  CHLY CE Kam Abbott reports that test recordings will be run until mid next week when the link to the studio will be in place.
  • 09/20/01 - CE Kam Abbott reports that all parts are in place for a possible test of CHLY FM 101.7 Nanaimo tonight around 9 p.m.  If all goes as planned with the transmitter and combining network at Cottle Hill just north of the central Vancouver Island city, both 101.7 and CHWF FM 106.9 "The Wolf" should very soon be a reality.  CKWV FM 102.3 Nanaimo will likely experience some dead air as the test takes place.

  • 09/19/01 - Digital Radio (DAB) in Canada is likely to take a giant step forward as engineering studies have been announced for more stations in the corridors between Toronto, Windsor, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City, Calgary/Edmonton and Vancouver/Chilliwack.   Additionally, Texas Instruments and Radioscape have jointly announced a price breakthrough of US$45 for a new DAB chipset which will likely bring the cost of AM/FM/MP3/DAB receivers down below US$135.   Digital Radio Canada Info
  • 09/18/01 - The KCIS AM 630 Edmonds website is currently down for a rebuild.  Matt Mundt from sister station KCMS FM 105.3 "Spirit 105.3" reports that the Crista Ministries station site should be operating again soon.
  • 09/17/01 - It seems our item immediately below about CFSR AM 850 having vacated the AM band is a bit premature.  CFSR's AM signal was back on today.  Their outage was likely caused by a technical failure rather than the plug being pulled on the frequency.   The station is required to shut down AM 850 by November 30.
  • 09/16/01 - CFSR AM 850 Abbotsford already appears to have vacated the AM band, even though the station was given a three month transition period by the CRTC after moving to FM 107.1 on August 31.  As of this writing, sister station CKSR AM 1270 Chilliwack is still operating as a simulcast of their new FM 98.3 frequency.  As a result, KHHO AM 850 Tacoma is reaching north to the border and beyond.  Thanks to Bill Kral

  • 08/31/01 - Apparently there is a recent tradition that Rogers Radio stations make major changes at 5 p.m. on the Friday of a long weekend.  As such, The "STAR-FM" trio of CKSR FM 98.3 Chilliwack, CFSR FM 107.1 Abbotsford and CKIS FM 100.5 Hope officially launched as "The Valley's Light Rock" today at 5.  The three new FM stations replace AM frequencies of 1270, 850 and 1240 respectively.  They have CRTC authorization to continue simulcasting on AM for up to three months.  Thanks to Brian Walks.
  • 08/30/01 - Rogers Radio has applied to the CRTC to increase the effective radiated power of CKVX-1 FM 92.5 Abbotsford, which will improve its signal quality throughout the coverage area.  CRTC Info (item 5)   Note: The CRTC generally quotes station ERP as "average" power, whereas this site uses the more accepted practice of quoting "peak" power from Industry Canada and FCC records. 
  • 08/30/01 - After four years, Aamer Haleem is leaving as host of VTV Breakfast on CIVT-TV/32 Vancouver to persue other opportunities.  His last show is tomorrow (Friday).   New host of the show, now called CTV Breakfast, is Tamara Stanners.  The show will move to an earlier time of 5 to 7 a.m. starting Tuesday, September 4.  BC CTV Press Release

  • 08/23/01 - In regard to the official call letters of NOWTV/66 Fraser Valley, other websites are listing the station as CFVT-TV.  That was the call sign originally applied for.  However, on April 7/01, NOWTV's Albert Lo stated, "The previous call sign of CFVT was not approved and consequently had been discontinued."  His latest correspondence of Aug. 23/01 states, "We are still awaiting Industry Canada's approval of an official call".

  • 08/22/01 - Dave Ratener, CE for KNHC FM 89.5 Seattle advises that equipment for their new Cougar Mountain directional transmitter (47-32-35 122 06 25) has been ordered.  ERP will drop to 8.5 kW from the current 30 kW, but HAAT will increase from 92 to 372 meters, which will offset the power decrease.   Overall coverage will not change significantly, but the signal should be much cleaner in most areas.  The new facility is expected to be in operation by November.

  • 08/17/01 - When the TV networks get shuffled in Vancouver September 1, Jill Krop will anchor the new 11 pm News Hour Final on CHAN-TV/8 "Global BC".  Other changes at the soon-to-no-longer-be CTV affiliate include extension of the Morning News from 5:30 to 9 am, anchored by Lynn Collier and Steve Darling; the Noon News Hour hosted by Randene Neill; Deborra Hope moves to the Early News at 5 pm; the new half-hour Global National runs at 5:30 pm with former ABC correspondent Kevin Newman and former CKVU-TV/10 news anchor Suzette Meyers handles the weekend morning, noon and 6 pm newscasts.

  • 08/16/01 - Not many programs last for 50 years on the air, but on Wednesday October 3 CBC Television will launch the 50th season of "Hockey Night in Canada" with a special telecast.  For local broadcasting history enthusiasts, CBUT/2 Vancouver did not carry the Saturday night games until October 1958.  For the first 7 years on television, radio and TV were simulcast.  Thanks to Brian Walks

  • 08/04/01 - "Listen at your own risk" say the promos on KYCW AM 1090 Seattle.  The station will switch formats Monday August 6th at 5:00 a.m. with the warning that "It will be an 18 and over format".   The 50 kW AM stereo powerhouse, which can be heard during the day from Vancouver to Centralia and at night over much of the western states and provinces (the only real interference comes from equally powered XEPRS Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico), is abandoning its Classic Country format after two and a half years.
  • 08/04/01 - KRIZ AM 1420 Renton is no longer simulcasting KYIZ AM 1620, but carrying Solid Gold Soul (the same satelite-fed format that KSRB AM 1150 Seattle recently dropped in favor of All News).  That leaves all three Z stations (they call them the ZTwins) with different formats:  KRIZ with R&B oldies, KYIZ with urban contemporary, and KZIZ AM 1560 Sumner with gospelmusic/Spanish-brokered.  Thanks to Mike Cherry

  • 07/30/01 - Veteran country music announcer Bob Bye has passed away just short of his 75th birthday.  Bob died of a heart attack earlier this month at his home in Penticton, BC.  He began his broadcasting career on the Prairies, in Regina, SK and Winnipeg, MB but was best known for his many years, starting in 1966, at former country giant CKWX AM 1130 Vancouver, where he retired in 1989.
  • 07/26/01 - Mel Risdon (a.k.a.   • 07/12/01 - 3250 Low Power FM applications have been filed with the FCC, and as many as 1200 could become licensed in the US. While these are only applications for a CP, in many cases they are unopposed.  Unless petitions to deny are filed, they could become reality quite quickly.  100-watt LPFMs will be licensed exclusively to local groups for the first two years.  Non-local groups will be eligible later on.  And eventually a licensee may own up to 10 stations nationwide.  News source, M Street Publications  Several applications have been filed in the Pacific Northwest.

  • 04/13/01 - CKVU-TV Channel 10 Vancouver has been sold to CHUM Television.  Many thanks to Dave Youell, Chief Engineer CFUN/QM/FM Vancouver.  The C$125 million deal is subject to CRTC approval.  Selling the station was a condition of a 1999 CanWest acquisition of eight new stations to add to its stable of newspapers, cable channels and radio networks.  CHUM recently received the nod for a new Victoria TV station, CIVI, which is expected to be on air this coming fall.  Story and video from Pulse24.com
  • 04/12/01 - CKST AM 1040 Vancouver is once again transmitting in AM stereo after running in mono for several months due to technical difficulties.  Thanks to Chief Engineer, Ed Jurak for this information.
  • 04/12/01 - Word has been received that newsman and talk host Bill Munson passed away in January.  Munson worked at such Seattle area stations as KOL, KAYO and KJR (partnering there with Gary Lockwood in an afternoon drive show).  According to colleague Bill Taylor, Munson also worked at stations in San Francisco and Los Angeles, under his real name B.R.   • 04/11/01 - CKST AM 1040 Vancouver is now set to debut with all sports programming May 7.   Affiliation will be with the CHUM Sports Network coast to coast from flagship CHUM AM 1050 Toronto, which is currently featuring a goodbye reunion of its oldies format.  Thanks to Brian Walks.
  • 04/03/01 - The FCC has granted application by KWOK AM 1490 Hoquiam to change city of license to Cosmopolis with transmitter location change to 46-57-30 123-48-35.  Transmitter power will be 1kw day/.76 kw night.

  • 03/11/01 - Spencer Broadcasting has applied to the FCC for a transmitter location change for station KGHO AM 920 Olympia.  New location will be 47-3-44 122-49-49 with power of 3 kw day and .017 kw night non-directional.  Currently off air, the station will transmit from the same facilities as KLDY AM 1280 Lacey when it returns.

  • 03/04/01 - The 6.8 Northwest earthquake Feb. 28th claimed one radio casualty: KJR AM 950 Seattle was knocked off the air for about 45 minutes due to loss of power. The station returned to the air at about 12:30 p.m. despite damage to a tower and a water main break, temporarily using a tower slated for relocation to Tacoma.  None of the other Ackerly stations was affected.  Thanks to Broadcast Svcs

  • 02/01 - The US Federal Aviation Administration has approved the eight radio towers proposed for construction in the Lord's Hill valley by KRKO AM 1380 Everett.   The new towers, opposed by environmentalists, are required for the station's new 50,000 watt transmitter.  Further info from the Everett Herald.  Thanks to Larry Waldbillig

  • 02/01 - NORTHWEST BROADCASTERS pays tribute to veteran Vancouver broadcaster Rick Honey who passed away Saturday February 24.  He was the current morning host on CKBD AM 600.  Rick started in radio in Winnipeg in the early 60's.  He moved to CKLG (now CJNW) AM 730 in 1969 and went on to spend many years as the afternoon drive host at CKNW AM 980CKNW website story

  • 02/01 - KBCS FM 91.3 Bellevue has applied to the FCC for a small power increase to 8000 watts, a slight decrease in HAAT to 64 meters, with a non-directional antenna and a change in antenna location.  KBCS has been experiencing interference in some areas from CKXM FM 91.3 Victoria since that station came on the air.  Thanks to Brian Lord

  • 02/01 - KSVR FM 90.1 Mount Vernon g.m.   • 12/00 - The long awaited power increase to 50 kw for KJR AM 950 Seattle will undergo final testing during the first week of January.

  • 12/00 - KITZ AM 1400 Silverdale reportedly has been sold.  No further details are yet available.
  • 12/00 - As of December 1, Shaw Communications assumed the cable and @Home Internet Service in British Columbia previously operated by Rogers Communications.  During the past few months the access and download speed of this and other @Home sites deteriorated noticeably.  Shaw has committed a large investment to vastly improve the @Home service with increased server capacity and local routing.   We eagerly look forward to these improvements.  When operating at full potential, we are confident that this and other @Home sites in this area will once again download at lightning speed.  We thank you for your patience.
  • 11/00 - KBLE AM 1050 Seattle has been sold by HHH Broadcasting for $3.2 million to Sacred Heart Radio, which represents their first entry into the radio market.  The station is off the air until January pending FCC approval.  Thanks to John B.

  • 11/00 - The CRTC has granted CanWest Global Communications an extension to sell CKVU Channel 10 Vancouver to December 29.   After that time, all sale negotiations will be carried out by a trustee approved by the commission.
  • 11/00 - CanWest Global Communications has asked the CRTC to extend the deadline for divesting its assets of CKVU Channel 10 Vancouver from November 6, 2000 to May 2001.

  • 10/00 - KXPA AM 1540 Bellevue has dropped the Z-Spanish Radio Network in favor of Multicultural & Local programming.
  • 09/00 - Call Letter changes for Rogers Broadcasting stations (Radio Max) CKMA AM 850 Abbotsford to CFSR, CKGO AM 1240 Hope to CKIS, and CHWK AM 1270 Chilliwack to CKSR.
  • 09/00 - Format change for KNTB AM 1480 Lakewood/KBRO AM 1490 Bremerton from Triangle Broadcasting (gay and lesbian programming) to computer automated Oldies.
  • 09/00 - Construction will begin soon for the new transmitter facilities for KWDK, Channel 56 on West Tiger Mountain, under the FM array on the east tower.  KDWK was recently purchased by Daystar of Dallas.  Their antenna will be mounted on the east tower under the FM array.  KWPX 33, KCHV 45 and KWOG 51 are currently operating from Tiger.
  • 09/00 - KBLE AM 1050 has been sold for $2.85 million to HHH Broadcasting, who have also purchased KARS, AM 860 in Belen, NM.
  • 09/00 - KCMS FM 105.3 Edmonds has moved their transmitter to Cougar Mountain.  Power has been lowered to compensate for the increased height.   They were the last FM station in this area with a grandfathered power output - 115,000 watts.  The current allowable maximum is 100,000.
  • 09/00 - CHTT-FM 103.1 Victoria has changed to a new Hot 103 format along with their call letter change from CJVI, AM 900.
  • 09/00 - CKMO Victoria is now broadcasting on AM 900 which is a frequency swap from FM 103.1.
